[Spoiler alert review]
20th Century Boys is everything a mystery story should be. The character build up and development, the antagonist, the plot and world building, everything about this story is top tier.
First lets talk about the characters. Every one of them feels realistic and relatable in at least one moment. I don't want to spoil too much so all im gonna say It's just that no matter how big the circumstances or

the dimensions of the events, you never get the impression that the characters are invincible or that they can achieve anything, because after all, they are just humans dealing with things the way they can.
Now lets go with the plot. I like to split the story in three arcs: Bloody New Year's Eve, The end of the Christian era and Friend era. The first two are on the highest level in every single aspect: characters, plot and writing. Urasawa really was on fire while he wrote these two arcs, I can't think of anything wrong about the first two arcs. The pace is amazing and Urasawa makes a fantastic use with every character and plotline to reach a magnificent ending.
But then, we reach the Friend era and it dosen't feel the same. Im not saying it gets down bad, but can tell is not as good as the past arcs. The main problem with this arc is that it opens up too many subplots, tries to cover too many things, and in the end it feels like you've filled a glass with water until it overflows and you still can't stop. It's not that the events in this arc are poorly written, but that there are so many that in order to cover them all Urasawa didn't go into enough depth on each one and focused on making the overall story look good. Still, the ending isn't even close to being bad, but it does leave you with a strange feeling. Despite everything, I maintain that this manga is a masterpiece and I encourage you to give it a chance.
