A young guy called Otonashi Yuzuru awakes in an unknown place only to be told by a young girl, Yurippe, that he is in fact dead. From there he is taken under her wing and joins the battle group called the SSS who are fighting against a strange mysterious girl called Tenshi.
Angel Beats! story is very good and quite inventive, it takes place within a school environment that acts as a sort of purgatory for the characters as they fight against a girl called Tenshi to prevent themselves from being obliterated. What makes the story more interesting are the character's pasts that they have
...
to come to terms with and the ideal of whether they should stay there or run the risk of being incarnated as an insect, that they assume. At first I found the story very gripping but after a few episodes I felt the story went rather flat and it just didn't seem to uphold that brilliance it had in the first few episodes. I did find the story refreshing that it had different tones of drama and comedy, some episodes were serious and some were focused more on comedy. There were some parts of the story that I did question and events in the story that I had no idea why that happened and where it came from, sometimes it felt like a serious scene happened but the characters were acting like 'Okay we're moving on' when you'd think there'd be so much more to it. It did surprise me in a sense and what I did like about the story was the fact that it dwelve in to the character's past and how they died.
The characters were very interesting, particularly Otonashi, the mysterious Tenshi, the Band guitar player and singer, Iwasawa, and of the course the leader of the SSS, Yurippe. I did like the fact that the story went deep into their past and you got to find out more about the characters themselves, I think that is what makes them more interesting and gives them reasons to why they act the way they do. It's interesting to see how the characters
each see their situation in different ways. There are quite a number of characters and I did find that tricky sometimes at first to remember who was who but after some time you do begin to get familiar with them. The one flaw I did find disappointing is they didn't seem to dwelve into as many character's past's as I thought they would. It was as though some of the characters didn't really serve a purpose as to just being there and helping the plot move forward and to make it work.
The Animation I found really good, I found it very easy on the eyes and a joy to watch. The characters and the colours looked good and I was particularly impressed with the night scenes such as the scenes with the Band 'Girls Dead Monster' and the lighting effects. I didn't find any problems at all with the animation.
The Music I was impressed with, the opening 'My Soul, Your Beats!' by Lia I found really gripped me and is quite memorable with it's beats and piano tones, it certainly got me pumped for the episode. The ending song 'Brave Song' by Aoi Tada I felt was more melancholic and soft and I thought that contrasted well with the theme of the anime. There are quite a few
songs played by the band 'Girls Dead Monster' and for that I really liked, it actually played a part in the plot and the songs actually related to how the characters felt, some were upbeat, meaningful and catchy.
Overall I found this anime enjoyable and interesting, I did find it rather disappointing in a sense that I think it could of been so much better. I do think this anime is worth watching as the plot and characters are interesting, the animation and music is all good, I do find there are a couple of bumps along the way but it's worth a watch to see what you think.

Detroit Metal City: Birth of the Metal Devil is a good introductory episode for Detroit Metal City, it features a good opening to show the viewer what it is all about whilst introducing the characters and the overall taste of the anime. For those that have already seen the anime then it wouldn't be much of a loss to dismiss this as it's just showing parts throughout the show, for new viewers I wouldn't be worried about being spoiled some of the best parts as it doesn't give away too much. If you're a new viewer then it is pretty good to see whether it's

the sort of story and humor you would be into.

Detroid Metal City or DMC is about a young man called Soichi Negishi who finds himself as the lead Krauser II in a death metal rock band even though he would much rather be a solo artist performing love pop songs.
Firstly the story is very engaging and funny, the humor can be rather dark and filthy with it's it's strong language, sexual harrassment and comedy violence but it sets the tone with what the band and Krauser II are all about. It's fun to see Negishi use his alter ego Krauser II to his advantage through his day to day situations and events, not
...
for selfish reasons but rather for helping out others, getting himself out of tough scenarios and for pleasing his manager the 'President'.
The characters are very refreshing and funny, Negishi is a very polite soft spoken man compared to the filthy mouthed violent Krauser II, it's great to see him as his alter ego, particularly in situations to get him out of hot trouble. The other supporting characters are interesting such as the Death Records Manager called the 'President' who doesn't take no for an answer and doesn't take fail too lightly, there's Masayuki Wada as the bassist who would much rather be in a visual kei band, Terumichi Nishida the drummer who speaks few words, and Nashimoto Keisuke as the S&M mascot of DMC called the 'Pig of Capitalism' who get's beaten and abused on stage. Lastly and importantly there's the love interest of Negishi called Yuri Aikawa, and of course, the fans of DMC. The fans make the episodes very entertaining, they're funny, crazy, over the top and treat DMC and Krauser II as the holy grail, such as punching and fighting anyone who opposes Krauser II's name and creating rumors and legends of the band. There is not much character development except for Negishi but it is cool to see the back story of some of the characters and how they act outside of the band.
The animation I find is really good, it's old school looking but I think it adds character to the story. I find it rather appealing and goes well with the softness of some of the characters and it goes well with the more edgier scenes with the band. It doesn't distract at all and I think it gives such a lovely distinct style to it.
The music is very good, it sets the tone for each scene whether it's whimsical or comical. The opening song shows the type of music that DMC plays and while I'm not much of a death metal fan it did grow on me. The ending song is more soft pop and that's what I like about the opening and ending song, it shows the opposites of Negishi and Krauser II.
Overall I enjoyed this anime and I would recommend it, it made me laugh and kept me engaged throughout the whole experience. The only disadvantage is I wished it was longer as it has only left me wanting more but I know it'll add to the fact I'll most likely watch it again in the future. There could have been more closure to the story or more insight into the characters but overall this anime is fun to watch.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is a moving tale about two siblings caught in a inevitable situation of a 8.0 earthquake and is based on a hypothetical situation of a earthquake occurring along with being produced after research and inspection of facts. The story overall is very moving and it conveys very well the effects and devastation an earthquake of that or any magnitude could cause on not just the environment but the effects on the people's mentality and health. It is a very moving tale about two siblings called Mirai Onozawa and Yukki Onozawa who, along with meeting a woman along the way called Mari Kusakabi,
...
focus on getting home to their families whilst on their journey coming across the struggles that the earthquake has brought upon them and those around them.
I found the story very moving and at times uplifting, Mirai Onozawa seems rather negative and pessimistic whilst her brother Yukki is very uplifting, energetic and positive. The woman Mari Kusakabi is rather the 'mother' of the group who offers guidance and makes sure that all of them make it home safely. It is good that you can see along the journey how much they grow, particularly Mirai, and how each take from each other their strong points to make it through. The story seems to flow rather well, I think sometimes there were a couple of knocks where I felt they were trying to stretch it a bit and it seemed to drag a tad but overall I think the last few episodes make up for that.
I think the animation was very good, particularly the environment as it did good portrayal of the devastation and ruins, the rubble and broken houses, the uneven slabs of pavement, I think it captured the whole feel of the earthquake. I think the animations of the characters were good, I would say they weren't very bright but it could be to make the environment stand out. I did feel that the characters expressions looked rather gone out and paper thin at times but it didn't really distract from the whole experience.
I would say the music was so-so, I wouldn't say it was bad but not very memorable but it did well to convey the emotions in certain scenes. I must say that the ED/Ending song was quite memorable to me, it did leave a good impression on me, quite moving and enthusiastic, it certainly got me pumped for the next episode. The voice acting was quite good, I think they matched their characters very well, particularly Yukki as it certainly matched his sparky positive personality, I could have no qualms about it.
Overall I enjoyed this anime, it made me smile at times and it made me tear up too, it certainly did well at pulling at my heartstrings and it gave that whole impression and feeling of loving what you have, not taking things for granted.

Umi ga Kikoeru is a movie produced by the acclaimed Studio Ghibli based upon the novel of the same name by Saeko Himuro. Instead of being directed by Hayao Miyazaki it was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki as it was developed by the younger staff to make it cheaply and quickly but in good quality. The story takes place in a small sea town called Kochi and features two best friends called Taku Morisaki and Yutaka Matsuno who get caught up in the arrival of the new female transfer student from Tokyo called Rikako Muto, from there friendship is challenged by love. I would say the
...
story flowed really well, it seemed very natural and it wasn't trying to be overly dramatic, it did keep me interested and I found the characters made up for that - Taku Morsaki, the main character, was very likable and interesting as he seemed hardworking, helpful and with a good head of his shoulders when it comes to responsibility. The other two characters such as his best friend Yutaka Matsuno were interesting but I felt there could of been more to be shown from his character, I would say the most interesting of all would be other character Rikako Muto, she seems spoiled and immature but throughout the story you can begin to see the reasons why. I like how each character begins to grow and mature throughout the journey.
I would say the animation was very good, it is 90's animation but for that I'm very fond of and the animation is done very well, the colours are gentle and the characters and environments seem very natural. I would say the music was very good, it set the tone for the movie in that it is soft and gentle. The voice acting I found was very good, each matched the character and their personality very well.
I would recommend to watch if you like slice of life, drama, and romance. I think if you liked the other Studio Ghibli movies such as Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart then this is worth having a go. I did find it very enjoyable and relaxing to watch, it wasn't trying to force anything and it allowed you to draw up your own ideas and conclusion throughout the movie.

Tekkon Kinkeet is a movie that is adapted from the three volume manga series of the same name by Taiyo Matsumoto. At first glance I found the animation absolutely stunning, it stood out to me and had such an appeal to the eyes by the use of bold bright colours, it gave the animation of the characters and the enivronment such splendor and personality that I could not help but divert my eyes and take it all in, the art for this movie was very well done. The story I found was very good, the main characters are Black and White who are street kids
...
that are living in a city called Treasure Town, the city is starting to become even more populated by the yakuza, rival gangs and the law and throughout the story you meet characters that tie into certain groups, each character I found did their justice for the story, they were interesting and you could see how each character had their own ideals and how they behaved. I would say none of the characters were bland, the main characters Black and White lived up to their name in difference of their personalities as Black is rather pessimistic and uses violence as a way to sort out problems yet White has a rather optimistic talk attitude and they compliment each other well. The story I found was multilayered and that is what I found interesting, there was so much that could be interpreted within certain scenes that it allowed you to have your own ideas, whether the producer and/or director was trying to convey it or not. It has this sort of Yin and Yang approach that allowed you to look beyond and see symbolism which is what I enjoyed. I would say there was a slight bump during the journey, either it was a part of the pacing or the story but I found it's easy to ignore and just go with it.
The music was great, I think it it complimented the movie very well especially during the action scenes. I found the Japanese voice acting very good, I didn't find any of the voices irritating or annoying, I think each characters voice suited that character incredibly well and brought out their personality.
Overall I find this a great movie, I enjoyed the ride and I would say there was the odd bump or two but I know I'll want to watch it again in the future. I would recommend to give it a go.
