High School of the Elite is an anime that tries to be good. While an overall enjoyable show, there are tons of plot threads that are made to seem important and then totally ignored. While this might be an issue with the anime adaptation and not the source material (idk, haven't read it myself), it's inexcusable how bad the plot was, and the characters are so one-dimensional it's beyond imagination. For example, there is a girl who is a total psycho but has a facade of being nice. Normally that'd be something that is at least affecting their actions usually, but instead she gets caught
...
freaking out once, blackmails the MC with rape allegations to never mention it, and then it is almost never mentioned again. This solidifies her as a trope and not a character in the same way that most of the other characters are dealt with.
Even the MC has no depth. His actions seem reserved and emotionless, and then they reveal later that... that's legit exactly the case. There are constant scenes alluding to some plot device background of the MC, but it just feels like meaningless context.
All in all there are some funny bits but most of it is just decent premises ruined by lack of character development and interesting interactions.

Love is Hard for Otaku isn't my typical anime. I was recommended this by a friend and figured I'd try it. I just want to preface this with the statement that I don't find a lot of appeal with anime centered around romance.
Now that being said, this is not your typical anime centered around romance. This is an anime about romances between Otakus. As someone who enjoys anime and could easily be categorized as various kinds of Otaku, I can say that this definitely had some good references to Otaku's life and culture, mostly to positive comedic effects.
It is pretty good at this
...
comedic aspect, and the art is solid. Definitely some meme-worthy humor overall. However, there is next to no plot. While I understand it's a romance anime and that's not the focus, I would be amiss in not pointing that out.
Overall, if you are an Otaku (and let's face it, if you are reading my rather mediocre review of an anime titled: "Love is Hard for Otaku" you definitely are,) then you will probably get a kick out of this. I can't testify to whether the romantic parts are of good quality or not because I don't watch enough of it, but it didn't seem noticeably bad.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II has taken the original meh anime and made it worse. Literally ignoring leveling, the show instead shifts focus to conflicts between gods and progress becomes adding new members to the harem and solidifying existing ones.
If you like harems and liked season 1, then you'll like this. However, the harem is still boring, and they just add a fox girl and have a whole thing about the existing loli. While the fights are still pretty solid and effects are cool, it feels like literally nothing happened this season apart from some Gods getting
...
rekt, which was soured by the fact that this kind of anime doesn't allow for the MC to lose, so you know how conflicts will end before they even start. It's just annoying and I'd rather see the MC fight more in the dungeon, which is almost entirely ignored this season.
I guess if you liked the original you'll like this, and it does set up for what could end up being an interesting season 3, as hopefully they'll slow down with the harem and focus more on the MC, but it's nothing worth recommending.
Side note: I know it's an ecchi show, but a whole arc about prostitutes is a little much. I feel like they are just forcing the ecchi into the show in a way that feels artificial. You could get the same imagery with something like a God from a foreign land full of scantily-clad female warriors (same god, same people) instead of literal prostitutes. It also doesn't really make sense given the context of the world that there would be a whole area of prostitutes and the way that gods overlook other gods attacking each other it just stupid. It breaks any small threads of immersion that the show had. Not a fan. I'll still watch the 3rd season when it comes out, but I suspect I might drop it mid-season.

Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is an anime that involves a surprising lack of picking up girls in dungeons, although the MC adventures in a dungeon with his ever-growing group of friends, most of whom join his harem of girls representing a ton of tropes, all of whom have some kind of troubled past that the MC helps them get past.
The show has some stellar fights with some high-quality art and sound, along with an interesting power system in how it works with the MC, who of course has a super OP ability that literally makes him
...
able to win any fight with the power of "plot magic". It goes downhill from there, as the show fails to make well-developed characters. The MC is an innocent ignorant earnest MC (aka generic MC) and all the supporting cast is much the same in how they fall too easily into tropes. The plot is also super dull and predictable. Plot loop: MC is weak, tries to level up, encounters new person/harem member, befriends new person, MC levels up, MC gains harem member, rinse and repeat.
It is able to engage a fan of fights or harems, but it's far outclassed by other similar shows. That being said, if you like this kind of leveling and are able to put up with the mediocre harem elements then this is still worth a watch.

Re: Creators is an anime about characters from various anime, manga, games, etc who get brought into the real world and are manipulated by the villain in an attempt to destroy the world. Episodes vary greatly, but usually have fights.
Disclaimer: I have only watched 5 episodes at the time of this review because I stopped enjoying it.
The premise is really interesting, but I feel that the nature of the plot wasn't conducive to a good anime. Hypothetically, an anime about characters in the real world sounds really neat, but the stuff that makes a character good is backstory, interactions, etc. Since these characters in the
...
show don't actually exist in real-life media, it ruins the immersion a bit, since there is no plot development in the characters' individual worlds, and instead they just mention their backstory and expect you to extrapolate from there. However, while as someone with a good handle on common tropes I am able to extrapolate, I didn't enjoy the fact that I had to figure out who the characters are.
If you like the idea of the premise, you might enjoy this, but it isn't for me and I can't recommend it.

Akame ga Kill is an anime about an innocent MC who adapts to a corrupt city by joining up with a group of assassins. Episodes consist of the MC being dumb and innocent along with killing various assassination targets.
Disclaimer: At the time of this review I have dropped this show after watching 4 episodes. I won't speak to later content as I can't bring myself to watch another episode.
This anime has good art and a decent premise. However, it takes this "innocent" MC, kills his two friends, and then he murders a defenseless (albeit evil) girl. The two friends seem to just be 2-dimensional objects
...
of "oh, this is my motivation", and literally every other character falls into tropes too neatly and it makes for very uninteresting characters that aren't compelling either, including the MC. He literally says "I don't want to kill people" before killing multiple people in the same episode in the same episode. It just seems like every promise the anime presents is just broken immediately and nothing means anything.
There is also a dull power system consisting of a handful of powerful weapons scattered around the empire. While there is nothing terrible about that, it seems unlikely that the MC's friends have around 15% of the world's weapons, and a system with no progression tends to be a bit dull by itself and can't carry the show.
If you are a sucker for MCs forced to adapt to harsh realities and killing, then there are much better anime than this. See Tokyo Ghoul, Danganropa, Re: Zero, Devilman Crybaby, etc. They are all very different and good in their own right separate from this generic similarity. If you still want to watch this piece of trash, then go right ahead, but be warned.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is an anime about a world where nearly unkillable zombie-esque monsters have driven humanity into shelters that are effectively giant train stations. Follow the intelligent MC as he kills the monsters after he makes a cool gun with zero range and becomes a half-monster by asphyxiation and rides a train around.
It has pretty solid art and a decent premise, but that's where my praise ends. While it's pretty enjoyable, the characters are all very dull, and I didn't feel anything at all when they killed important characters. It also has a lot of questionable plot, like how the weapons
...
the MC develops to kill the monsters are all unheard of, and yet there's a famous boi going around with nearly identical weaponry. There is also a villain towards the end with a minimal background of "my daddy tried to get me killed so lemme f*ck up all of humanity in revenge" and the explanation of why the dad tried to kill him in the first place is super barebones and doesn't really justify it at all.
If for some reason your love of fighting and humanity fighting off a seemingly-unstoppable threat is somehow able to justify watching than still don't watch it. Just watch Attack On Titan instead. It's much better in every way. However, if you've already watched that, then I guess you could give this a shot. I wouldn't really recommend it though.

Devilman Crybaby is a simultaneously psychedelic and depressing anime about demons taking human hosts and killing people, and how our empath MC becomes someone with the body of a demon and a human heart (Devilman, hence the title) and must defend the humans from this threat. Episodes vary wildly, from fights to introspective rap songs, to biblical talk, etc.
Something really great about the anime is how strongly it sticks to its main traits: being psychedelic and depressing. I really think those two words sum up about every episode, and with them being so different it is really a wonder as to how they pulled
...
it off. You will be drawn in by the psychedelic art, settings, and themes, only to be hit by a train of depression as a terrible event occurs. I feel that this anime is definitely a good anime, but because of these themes it is still too niche for widespread appeal, and I personally don't love these themes and as a result probably didn't enjoy it as much as I could have, although it was still very good.
If you like psychedelic art and themes along with becoming chronically depressed from a 20-ish minute animation, then this is for you. In case you aren't aware, there is a lot of sexual content and partial nudity (tits & butts) that can be filed as "enhancing the psychedelic theme" but I think it in there mainly because Netflix is the one doing it (they do it will a disproportionately large number of their original animated shows, see Castlevania). I don't feel that it qualifies as fanservice or smut, and it usually isn't in-your-face, more of a background thing. However, keep in mind that it's there, and if any normal amounts of this content makes you squeamish it's not for you.

Hunter x Hunter is a great anime about a young boy on his journey to improve as a Hunter. Episodes consist of training to be a Hunter, Hunting some baddies, and other Hunter-themed activities. This anime makes great use of a very logical power system while also allowing for some leeway in terms of what powers can exist.
It's got a great power system and great characters. You will empathize with everyone, especially villains, which is actually a part of the plot in some cases. The show also displays how while strength is important, there are more ways to win than violence. It's also good
...
at keeping you on your toes and sometimes decides to do things you wouldn't expect. However, the main criticism I have is the shifting focuses of the show. While a lot of the arcs are really great, the ant arc had a unique (not bad) pacing where it had an excessively long set of episodes that were exclusively fighting. I did enjoy it but it felt a bit out of place, although it was still pretty great.
If you like interesting power systems, well-thought-out characters, or fighting, this is the anime for you! Keep in mind that there are some pretty serious sad-boi moments, so go in expecting the albeit rare sadness overload.

Title, Summary, Episode
Pros, Cons
Draws
Kill la Kill is an anime about a girl at a school where clothes (and lack thereof) grant over-the-top powers to everyone involved. Episodes consist of beautiful high-impact fights revolving around the MC avenging her dad, with a mysterious and intriguing plot continuing to draw you in throughout, along with a lot of humor, a good portion of which has to do with the lack of clothing on some characters.
This anime does a great job with fights and comedy! Really spectacular. The main drawback for me was that while the world-building part of the plot was interesting, the main twist was kind
...
of obvious to me and heavily foreshadowed throughout. (Won't give anything away bec spoilers, but hopefully upon watching you will get what I mean.) It seems like it was the intent but it still rubbed me the wrong way. It caused my interest to dissipate towards the second half which was kind of sad because it was perfect otherwise.
If you like fights, comedy, fights, fanservice, action, and fights than this is for you! There is plenty of mature content, but nothing uncensored or anything, and it's primarily for comedic or plot purposes, so at the very least it doesn't seem out of place.
