This is a spoiler-free review of the first volume.
Should you read this novel? Sure, but I think there are better novels you could read. I don't regret the time I put into reading this novel and I actually enjoyed reading it!
The novel has many issues such as its pacing, its lack of a compelling antagonist, and mediocre world-building. That isn't to say that the story is bad though.
This story isn't balls to the walls packed with action (while there is it isn't the focus) but rather a story of atonement, goodbyes, and how apathy can lead to atrocities. What the story does well is

Okay...if you're going to take the anime seriously yeah you're not going to find it very entertaining or funny. It's not supposed to be a serious rendition of the trope "CHAD OP MC DESTROYS ALL VIRGIN BETA CUCKS IN A FANTASY WORLD" / power fantasy genre but rather a mockery of it and that - it's entertaining.
The main MC says something along the lines of "You thought I would die just because you killed me?" It actually is a commentary and satire on the whole power fantasy genre. Yeah, it doesn't have a compelling or thrilling story and if you ... Jul 29, 2020
As of the time I'm writing this review I've only watched up to and including episode 4.
--UPDATE--- I've updated the review after episode 11. Please check the updated section at the bottom for more details. Story (9/10): So the hit or miss series Re:Zero comes back with a second season with more new mysteries and characters. With how the narrative is structured for this season it's clear to see that the world-building elements that were present in the 1st season will be used in the second season again to develop the world of Re:Zero through the trial of the sanctuary. The foreshadowing set up in season ... Jul 9, 2020

The actual premise of the story is very simple. It's a story about how the wishes of people can become distorted and how our own lack of belief in our wishes takes shape into something grotesque when in reality our wish was something much more simpler and much more attainable.
The main protagonist Kazuki Hoshino is invested in his daily life of a normal highschool boy when suddenly someone who calls herself Aya Otonashi declares herself Kazuki's enemy which begins the insane yet heart touching story. The characters are hit or miss. But the growth and development they get makes them very endearing and you ... Jul 30, 2018
Considering this is Mari Okada's debut it is amazing how it turned out to be. That being said I do think it has some flaws which I will get into, which was primarily the story and the characters.
Story: 9/10 The story is simple and executed greatly but not to perfection which is why I did not warrant it a 10/10. The war sub-plot just doesn't feel important enough. You could replace it with any other real-event conflict and you wouldn't change the overarching themes or characters too much. I think Mari Okada just bit off more than she could chew here. Apart from that, ... Sep 29, 2017

The first mistake that I made when seeing the cover is thinking that it is a kids show that my little sister could watch... I couldn't be any further from the truth. This show is a god damn masterpiece and it outright deserves a 10. I made my first MAL account just so I could praise this show. Now on to the actual review...
Story: The storytelling elements that are used such as having the narrator set the tone or mood for the episode really make the episode great. The story as you can tell from the synopsis is one full of adventure. The plotline is ... |
