This recommendation is really obvious to me. Both are shounen/seinen action with really wonderful direction and extremely fitting music. Attack on Titan has much better animation and a more addicting story. However, I found Tokyo Ghoul's characters and themes to be more compelling. Tokyo Ghoul is also a little more mature and has more elements of horror. Be warned, for AoT has a few pacing issues, and Tokyo Ghoul season 2 is quite divisive. I just feel like these two anime go hand in hand. Want something solid to watch while you wait for AoT 2? Try Tokyo Ghoul! Feel empty after seeing the end of √A? Give Shingeki no Kyojin a watch!

Kamisama Hajimemashita

I'm not sure if it's because these anime share the same director, but they just *feel* so similar. Even Tohru and Nanami kinda look alike... Ok, what do these anime actually have in common? Both are fantasy romance shoujo centered around a high school girl who goes to live with supernatural beings of the opposite sex after she loses her family. In addition, both have aspects of culture incorporated nicely (Furuba being the Chinese Zodiac and Kamisama being Japanese gods and shrines). Fruits Basket is more dramatic and has some darker themes. Kamisama Kiss is more episodic and has a lot more emphasis placed on the comedy, but it can be heavy when it wants to be. Thankfully, the core relationships in both anime actually grow and develop a lot more than most romance anime.

Death Note

Death Note and Paranoia Agent both contain elements of mystery, suspense, police/detectives, and murder. Unfortunately, they both also suffer from plot derailment and meandering near the halfway mark. Still, these anime start out and end on a strong note. Both have near flawless direction, gorgeous art and captivating animation. Paranoia Agent is shorter and might get you to think a little more, especially if you're interested in psychology. Death Note is...a little bit lacking in the substance department; if Paranoia Agent is a full meal, Death Note is more of a light snack despite its longer episode count and fans who may claim otherwise. However, don't let this get in the way of your enjoyment of it. Death Note is probably one of the most addicting anime ever. That epic OST! Anyway, both are fantastic, nail biting thrillers, and you should definitely check the one out if you liked the other. Want a psychological mystery that will keep you guessing all along? Try Paranoia Agent. Looking for a suspenseful cat-and-mouse anime with a Dexter-like main character, a Sherlock Holmes/Batman-like "antagonist", and a story so thrilling simply eating potato chips is epic x1000? Try Death Note.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Both of these series are dramas with supernatural elements that have an emphasis on the relationships between compelling female characters. They both start out innocently enough and both have unexpected dark twists. Haibane Renmei is more peaceful and episodic, whereas Madoka Magica is much darker and more suspenseful. Each anime has its own strengths and weaknesses. Madoka has a stronger cast of characters, better writing, and is much more addicting. However, Haibane doesn't really need to have an epic plot that will constantly keep you on the edge of your seat to stand on its own. Haibane's atmosphere, symbolism and character interactions are nothing short of magical. I like to call Haibane "the subtler Madoka" because I found a lot of similarities in the relationship dynamic between the two most important characters in each series. Either way, both of these series are nearly equally matched terms of how they will move you emotionally. If you're looking for something more dark and tragic, try Madoka. In the mood for something more uplifting? Try Haibane. Absolute must watches, the both of them!

Mushishi

On the surface, these anime may seem like they have nothing to do with each other. One is an occult detective story about mysterious life forms, the other is a cross-class romance. However, these anime are very similar in terms of atmosphere. Thick, heavy atmosphere. Sometimes relaxing, sometimes mysterious, sometimes somber, but always strong atmosphere. Every episode has a weight to it, every character a long-staying presence. If you enjoyed one of these anime and are willing to watch another series based on similar tone and mood alone, give the other one a shot. Also, they could both be considered "historical" if only because both of their stories take place in the past: Mushishi taking place in Japan in a fictional time between the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration, and Emma taking place in Victorian London towards the end of the 1800's.
