Started watching anime in 2020. Now its just a side hobby I enjoy. My goal is to one day find the perfect anime!
1/10 - Bottom of the barrel and completely worthless
2/10 - Very minor positives, but still terrible
3/10 - One or two good things, but still, a very terrible anime
4/10 - These are typically shows that start off good, or have potential, but end up failing badly. They have multiple positives, but it just can't excuse all of its flaws
5/10 - We're entering the territory of mediocre. These anime are typically alright, with some positives and some negatives.
6/10 - Good, but not great. However, these shows typically have more positives then negatives.
7/10 - We've reached the point where the anime gets pretty good, but still nothing special. Typically, these anime have a significant amount of wasted potential, or end up failing in key areas.
8/10 - These shows are very good, only having a few major flaws, but these are the anime that I typically enjoy from start to finish, with only a few flaws that keep it from being amazing.
9/10 - Any 9/10 anime or higher are ones that I consider a must-watch for all anime fans. These are some of the best anime out there, being consistently engaging and well done. Each one of these anime are some of the best in the medium.
10/10 - The best of the best. Consistently engaging, well written, emotional, creative, and never wastes your time. I don't give many anime a 10/10, so if I do, YOU NEED TO WATCH IT.
This list is more objective than subjective. There are some shows I adore, but I can't deny their flaws. Easiest example is Code Geass. Its easily my favorite anime ever, but it has flaws that even I won't try to defend (and I'm a Code Geass simp lol).
Since MAL rates anime by individual seasons, my high rating for a season of a show can be different from what I rate the entire show. For example, I think Demon Slayer Season 1 is a 8/10, but if I have to rate the show as a whole (counting all seasons + the movie), I'd give it an 7/10. That 8/10 for Demon Slayer Season 1 is different from a 8/10 on, say, 5 Centimeters Per Second, since its only the first season, where as 5 Centimeters Per Second is a standalone movie.
Also, since most anime can be pretty repetitive and/or follow many cliches and tropes, I have a rule I apply for myself. There are many shows that are trash. Things like In Another World With My Smartphone, The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter and Shomin Sample are objectively trashy shows. However, they're very self aware about how bad they are. They don't really try to take themselves seriously, and know that they're goofy, stupid shows. If a show knows its dumb, and doesn't try to take itself seriously, then I typically give it a higher rating than usual, simply because it knows what it is. I call these type of anime "Dumb Fun." However, if the show is geninuely bad, and tries to take itself seriously, then I give it a lower rating. I'd much rather watch a guilty pleasure anime than a serious anime that ends up being a disaster. So the 7/10 I gave for High School DxD Season 1 is not the same 7/10 that I'd give for, say, Attack on Titan Season 1. A bit confusing, I know, but with how many trashy animes there are, this is how I rate them. If I were to rate anime objectively (by geninuely rating them based off of if they're good shows or not), then you'd be seeing High School DxD and Iceblade Sorcerer at a 3/10. I don't want to have so many low scores on my list lol. I'll only give low ratings if the anime geninuely takes itself seriously and ends up being bad. Hopefully you can understand this, because I know that this is a lot.
Note: I don't count parody shows as dumb fun shows. They're, well...parodies. They know that they are stupid from the get go, and use that to their advantage. So I don't apply my principles for "Dumb Fun" shows on parodies.
Characters are also very important too! If an anime doesn't have very interesting, or at least, somewhat decent characters, chances are, I'm probably not going to like it. As I've watched more anime, I typically rate a character based off of two things:
1. How likable they are as a character (e.g their personality, how they treat other characters, their traits, etc).
2. How interesting and unique they are (e.g their backstory, how they react in certain situations, their motivations and reasons for doing what they do, etc).
If they excel at one of these two things (e.g being likable, but not all that interesting), I'll still like them. However, the best character for me is a combination of these two things.
For antagonists, I rate them based off of how well written and unique they are, and how interesting and unique their reasons are for doing their "evil actions."
I like all character types, but my favorite character types out of all of them are smart, evil geniuses like Lelouch or Light Yagami. I love a good antihero :))))
Favorite Show: Code Geass
Favorite Movie: Princess Mononoke
I don't have a genre of anime I hate. From shounen to slice of life, anything works for me.
Thanks for reading!
