Love Live! School Idol Project

While they are two very different anime at a first glance, both are incredibly similar in characters. Both share quite a large group of protagonists who go on the same journey to achieve different goals and find themselves, often with relatable backstories along the way. Both crews are known for the chemistry between each other, the constant comedy of each character and "nakama" aspect of friendship that are as close as family, if not more. One group aims to become great idols, while the other aims to become great pirates. Some characters are very identical, especially both protagonists (Luffy and Honoka) who are airheads that lead the group with their grit and whimsical nature, who follow their hearts and emotions rather than ever caring about logic. Many of the character traits are usually played off in a very comedic nature, but are sometimes used for serious moments, and can even be a character's pitfall. Robin and Kotori both have a fallout with the team at some point where they leave for a small period of time during a serious story arc, while Robin and Eli both have similar personalities after adapting to the group (and both are supposedly Russian). Nico and Usopp are notorious liars and often claim to be the leader of their group or the greatest idol/pirate, as the crew members ignore their antics. Hanayo and Chopper were at some point incredibly shy and both pressured by the protagonists to join the crew, and both have a bubbly nature where they find things awesome or cute. Umi and Nami can be kind and high-spirited, but are known for their seriousness and keeping the protagonist in check, usually in a comedic nature, scaring the protagonist when they get really serious. Nozomi and Sanji are both perverted and share a love for cute girls, and both can even have a mysterious nature sometimes, although their (Nozomi and Sanji's) personalities are wildly different outside of those. For most of both shows length, both shows crews consists of nine members lead by the bubbly, child-like protagonist, and is nearly always promoted as such. If you enjoy the chemistry between the characters, the comedy and relatable nature and love between the crew members above all else, you may enjoy the other anime as well.

Both main characters are incredibly similar, almost to a T. They have low self-esteem, are often bullied, when one day a famous figure steps into their life to help them become the person they want to be. Both (a boxer and a hero) will require a great amount of training and combat trials. Ichiro and Todoroki are also relatively similar in personality and how their relationship with the main character unfolds.

To LOVE-Ru

Your daily life is filled with aliens (or alien-like beings)!? Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and To Love-Ru both starts with two teenage boys who aren't achieving much in life, when an alien-being steps into their daily lives. This alien being (Lala/Reborn) creates a brand new hectic daily life for the boys, where an interesting cast of characters follow along from their introduction. At the start, both shows main focus are the comedic aspects between the characters. After 20 or so episodes for both, the shows begin to introduce more serious story arcs, with character backgrounds, growth and stakes. To Love-Ru, however, is also ecchi and harem, while Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is not. The two main protagonists are very similar in personality and appearance. Rito (To Love-Ru) and Tsuna (Hitman Reborn!) are wimpy, yet ever so taking slow steps of growth. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and To Love-Ru are two Weekly Shounen Jump anime that follow a similar formula and sense of comedy. If you like one's formula, you may enjoy the other's as well.
