In never give up the female lead is cross- dressing as a model to stay close to her lover. thus creating some situations that make them appear homosexual. In Tenshi Ja Nai the male lead is cross dressing for other reasons but keeps the act up as an excuse to keep his lover close. This also creates a lot of situations where they appear homosexual.

Both take place in similar times, both have strong female leads looking to change the current kingdom's situation and both female leads dress as males. Each series deals heavily in the politics at that time, and both series seem to examine a wide array of human emotion. Saiunkoku had more romance, and Juuni kokuki had more action.

Female lead characters are weak initially, however through trials they become stronger, and learn how to deal with the male leads. Both were way too short; Hakushaku to Yousei seemed incomplete, and in Howl's Castle, Howls personality did not seem clearly developed enough for me.'

both are similar because you have a female lead that is unsure about herself but gains confidence through their partner's strengnth. I like the fact that both of the lead characters didnt immediately like the male lead, and kind of fell in love through adventurs. They are dissimilar because Howl's Castle is way too short.
