Two extremely short anime with low production values. In both cases, their appeal comes primarily from odd, surreal events that can be interpreted as erotic metaphors.

Joshiraku

What may briefly look like a normal-enough slice-of-life-show is soon exposed as an offbeat, somewhat surreal comedy. This describes Nichijou and Joshiraku equally. Like a lot of anime, they have situational comedy; but they are distinct for balancing it with a whole lot of absurdism, non sequiturs, puns, shaggy dog stories, and ludicrous slapstick.

Koukaku Kidoutai

Koukaku Kidoutai is full of action and political intrigue, but most of all, it invites the viewer to consider what it means to be human - and recontextualizes the question by situating it within a hypothetical future world. Texhnolyze does similar things on a grander scale, devoting more time to worldbuilding and bringing a larger cast of characters to bear. I feel that both works have a similar ethos, with both taking a nuanced approach to the possibility of technology fundamentally altering the human condition. Both seem to value the dynamism of humanity - our ability to adapt, both as individuals and as a species. But both also call attention to traumas and inequities that may result from such progress.
