Both works by Ikuhara surround somewhat confused protagonists in an abstract quest for an unusual goal. In each anime, just about every protagonist, supporting character and antagonist have much more to them than meets the eye. I also consider many characters in one series to have an uncannily similar character in the other.

Both of these anime are short 25 minute movies about loneliness in a science fiction setting. Both of these anime spend most of their time illustrating this loneliness and both end without full resolution of the issues brought up.

Both of these series are shoujo based on fairy tales which invert the classic relationship between men and women in them. In each of these anime, the protagonist is a girl who takes on the role of the hero traditionally designated to the prince, a man. Both anime also ask if the heroic actions we see in fairy tales are really genuine and are really the right thing to do.

Very similar and unconventional art style. Both series heavily conceal important information from the viewer as a technique to give a feeling of uncertainty throughout the series. Both have an episodic format, although Kaiba abandons this after the first half of the series. Finally each of these anime is very good, very deep, and surprisingly touching.

When I first watched Paranoia Agent, I thought I would never see anything like it again. Thankfully, I was wrong. Mawaru Penguindrum bears many similarities to Paranoia Agent. These include large amounts of humor in the beginning, extremely strange and convoluted plots, highly flawed but loveable characters, and surprisingly touching endings. Finally, both of these anime have very significant points to make regarding escapism for Paranoia Agent and fate for Mawaru Penguindrum.

Both series discuss the implications of using child soldiers to protect the world from terrifying, otherworldly beings attacking for an unknown purpose. It doesn't end well for the kids in either case...

Both series repeatedly switch between slice of life and horror. In both series, enough time is spent with both the slice of life and the horror that the viewer should enjoy both genres to really like each series.

Both anime are about dystopian societies that base their legal system on the risk of committing a crime and extensive information control with the intention of preventing people from learning things that could risk the order of society. In both anime, the government is shown to have reason to act the way they do, but it never really is fully justified. Finally, the weaknesses of both societies are exploited to great harm to the population.
