At least Chise didn't take on a curse this time.
Plot:
The show continues to build on its world. We learned why hooded boy held philomenia instead of Rifan, he's slightly more forward about his feelings for her and we learned what's the deal with Blondy and Philomenia: Generational indentured servitude. A character that we saw in Season one makes a come back. We meet some new folk and Chise learns some new abilities same old, same old. The main plot is figuring out what's the deal with Philomenia? She's struggling more than usual. Turns out it's all her Grandmother's fault however
...
we learn she's worse than expected. How could you beat someone for being poisoned?! Philomenia's grandmother is a plague. That's pretty much it, the conflict between philomenia, the rest of the crew and her grandmother is really well handled.
Characters:
Chise seems to be less self sacrificial compared to the last season, she's still willing to help but not to the point of putting herself in immediate danger. It's a good direction for her character to go in as she probably, realises the problems her self sacrificial actions brings to those around her.
Philomenia's grandmother as a villain is just OK. She's consistently selfish, not just with how she treats philomenia but how she treats her son as well. She plans to bring him back but shows not a single thought for how he'll react when he realises he used his daughter for this ritual. Though I suppose that depends on how much of him actually comes back.
Philomenia's desperation to get her parents back is really well written when I thought about it. Philomenia has had no one for long enough outside of her artificial fairy who legimately wants to be around her or help her. Elizabeth only seems to keep her around as a continuation of the generational indentured servitude, and I assume to have a girl her age near by. Chise wants to help her but Chise's only been at the school for like 5 months and that's not a lot of time to combat years of toxicity and loneliness even with big and small acts of care. Even her artificial fairy is just an extension of her parents love and care for her. It makes sense that it takes Philomenia as long as it did to choose Chise's help.
Animation
The animation continues to not reach Season one's level but its still good for example:
The wind blowing Philomenia's and Elizabeth's clothes in Episode 4 as they spoke as children
The pen ink swishing in episode 1
The sparks that fly as philomenia uses chise's rune.
Music:
The music continues to be good for example:
The music that plays as Philomenia eats chise's gift.
The music that plays as Philomenia's grandmother tells the gang to mind their business.
Enjoyment:
I think the show is still quite good even with the drop in quality of animation. I will continue to happily keep up with it.
Other:
Good luck?! Please, Elias wishes they had such! They have the luck of the detective agency at this point.

Girl with daddy issues has a thing for older men? A tale as old as time.
Plot:
Plot? Don't you mean plot twist!
There is so much going on, but long story short, vampires have taken over around half of the human population and Fukichi, yes, I mean, saver of the world, Fukuchi has organised all of this. Why? To end war the world over and have another plot twist as if there aren't enough already. Fukichi's plan was literally just stolen from the guild and made global rather than strictly national. Speaking of the guild, where are they? Sure there's only like 3 of
...
them but little women could have come up with some sort of plan and Fitzgerald is rich again so why aren't they helping? Sure, if we saw them as vampires that would excuse it, but they just aren't there. Speaking of people who should also help what's the port mafia up to? I know Chuuya is with Dazai even so all of the mafia could not have been turned. Mr '12 and under girls only' Mori, there was a 12 and under that needed your help and you were nowhere to be seen! it's not like the detective agency and the port mafia don't speak to each other, they literally told Mori he had a spy amongst his group. Why is there a lack of coordination on the world ending of all things? Couple more things otherwise I'll just go on forever: Why didn't Aktugawa turn Aya, sure for storytelling it's so Astushi can point out that he promised onto kill anyone, but I assume turning someone isn't killing them so, there is no reason not to turn Aya other than to have her try to free Bra. Fukuchi being so overpowered lends itself to the continued plot of some abilities not having internal drawbacks but rather external ones which is the only way anyone is going to defeat him. Finally, I do not care if that attack happened point blank and hit their vital organ, none of the characters that are attached to the detective Agency will actually die. They pretended it would happen last season and this season too, and it did not. Which is not an issue at all, it's just not an actual plot point either.
Characters:
Aya having an abusive dad puts her want for justice into harsher yet interesting light. Aya wants justice since there is none in her home, there's nothing just about the standard her father places on her, which are based on her mother and sister who are dead and gone. Her character development is excellent, I was wondering why she didn't just accuse Jono the same way she accused kunikida and then it hit me: she saw what actual justice looks like when she was with kunikida and understood her actions weren't just. She understood that justice involves some sort of sacrifice which is why she took Bra with her, even though running alone would have given her better chance of escape and no target on her back.
Fukuchi is strangely enough not the antithesis of this. If Aya is the purest form of justice, then Fukuchi is the realistic form of it. what would it truly take to rid the world of war? Self sacrifice is one thing but that unfortunately isn't enough, as Fukuchi a military officer would know. its not the sacrifice of a few more people as war always involves sacrifices of others. It requires that there only be one state, after all the states can't argue about what resources are theirs if there aren't any other states. Fukuchi is a fantastic antihero, his goals are selfless while his methods are not. For example he's willing to allow other people die for world peace which while far less cruel than letting people die in war on the off chance of peace is still dragging innocent people into something they didn't ask for. There's also the fact that completely heroic characters like Aya and Astushi don't drag other people into their sacrificial ways, where as Fukuchi has someone else complete his sacrifice. He also leaves Fukuzawa having to think about what to do next, rather than there being a clear cut good plan for him to follow, unlike with Aya.
Now as for Bra he's neither of these. He's not selfless like Aya or sacrificial like Fukuchi. He cares about his people and would save the world for the them or in the case of Aya when someone reminds him of his people. Count Bram is apathetic to those who are not his own but not maliciously so. I believe that had his people been spared at that time, he would have no interest in world domination, he would just be on his farm tending to his sheep. His dynamic with Aya confirms this, and even though he doesn't have a lot of screen time, he's still a great character.
Music
The music continues to be great, such as the background music that plays when tachihara takes the sword from Fukuchi. Another example is music that plays when Fukichi notices the flash, it's so unbelievably tense.
The music that plays when kenji fights tetchou and we learn of Kenji's true abilities.
Animation:
Dazai dancing with sigma is so smooth. Chuuya's drowning and the water lapping around him look amazing.
The animation that plays when bra-chan talks about taking over the world is great also.
Enjoyment:
I continue to enjoy the show and believe it's amazing.
Other:
Ichiyo likes Akutagawa so much and I really hope they get together at some point during the show's or manga's run.

The stakes are high but somehow still not as high as Yosano's revival count.
Story
The first 3 episodes addresses the very beginning of the detective agency which started with Ranpo and the director. Its nice to know where Ranpo's delusion of Giftedness came from. The story is good and you get moments where you go 'Oh, I recognise that guy and they mentioned that before!' Which are always fun. The current time is where the story becomes great, the detective agency has been framed! They must now write themselves innocent and deal with the decaying angels. The story telling is fantastic but
...
what really brings it up are the twists. Parts of the government being against the detective agency is cool but not fully explored due to the decaying angels. It's strangely enough not even mentioned in passing like on the news or anything. That could just be because the decaying angels didn't know, but with how elaborate their plan is and how much they always seem to know it seems weird how they wouldn't even hear of such a plan accidently. The other twist was so out there I'm not even sure it makes sense. Sure their bother passed in war and He would have likely mentioned Yosano and her abilities, but why would that draw the conclusion that Yasano is the reason he's dead. Also is he going after the head of the port mafia? After all he shot his brother, is that a plot for the later seasons? The plot twists are great, they just brings up some questions. If I were to discuss the other plot twists I would be here for a while so we'll move on.
Characters:
Astushi continues to rely on his were tiger's ability however he's not the focus this season. Yasano's background superbly lends to her character. The causal, sadistic tone she takes when she heals memebers of the detective agency in previous season is put into a much more understandable perspective here because 1. She knows she will not have to heal the detective agency often 2. nor would they ever deliberately hurt another to force her to heal them unlike the port mafia boss. 3. At the end of the day Yasano knows the choice to heal her fellow members is completely her own. Its brilliantly written even if it does bring up questions.
Plot twist character - damn they knew these people for likely years at this point and they didn't hesitate to turn their team mates into multi skewered kebabs. They didn't even try to protect them, like, is your actual team that scary? Wow that's cra- Nevermind they care about their undercover team mates. Another twist!
Plot twists brother is a jerk, if you're going to die why are you calling Yasano? even mentioning her in a letter would have been better than that and would have made the plot twist make more sense. It's a shame too, the ship material was there.
Animation:
The animation continues to be amazing. The fluttering of the newspapers in episode one and the fight scenes are examples. The close up on the expression on red head Hunting Dogs face during her fight with sigma is some of the best facial animation I have ever seen.
Music:
The music is still as good as ever. Examples of thIs are the rousing theme that plays at the end of episode 11 and qhe playful, jaunty music that plays after the Hunting Dogs get defied in episode 12.
Enjoyment:
The show rarely misses a beat, it carries on with excellent animation, story telling and characters.
Other:
For all the emphasis the last episode of season 3 put on Akutagawa being a port mafia who doesn't kill the fact that He doesn't show up at all is mind boggling. Where is he and what is he doing? Hopefully we see him in season 5.

The most powerful of abilities: a rainbow tornado.
Plot:
The first four episodes deal with how Dazai and Chuuya met. It also gives chuuya a legitimate reason to hate Dazai. Sure, Dazai didn't tell Chuuya's friends to betray him but he did bring that around by mentioning the Port mafia at all. The only difference between him, at that age and Mori is that Dazai at least didn't indirectly kill children. The main modern day plot involves the respective leaders of the port mafia and the detective agency being effectively poisoned. With their leaders on the
...
line the 2 groups battle it out for a short while, afterall without their leaders, where would they be? The main plot is amazing, the stakes aren't higher but they are changed, which is unusual to see. Some side plots are depressing though, as per the usual with this show, orphans suffer. Like damn, whoever gets you as an orphan will either make you thrive or die imminently. The other thing that's curious is well the cat of one of the office workers. So we find out he's a human, a retired human to boot and that brings up so many questions. it sounds like the office worker has no idea this is the case did he just not want to transfer form back to a human anymore? Is it the drawback of his ability? What's his deal?
Characters
We learn that astushi's abusive orphan head master was on his way to see him. The episode ends with Atsushi crying due to knowing this fact, which surprisingly doesn't feel out of place considering how most of the characters are refreshingly complex.
With regards to the current villian's character, if he's in such admiration of the freedom of death why is he dragging the agency into it? Why not just free yourself? Why even drag, I assume, orphan children into your little battle with the agency? Other than to wreck your opponents morale? If you're looking to cleanse evil or whatever how do dead leaders cleanse evil? He's not even a bad villian, he just encourages so many questions.
Finally, as for Fitzgerald, how does someone forget sales are a thing?
Animation:
Just like with last season it is top tier for example Chuuya blasting through the window in episode 2, The bottle breaking in episode 4 and the punch from murderous chair man.
Music:
Nothing stood out this season.
Enjoyment:
I am super excited to carry on with the next season. New plot point after plot point keep getting brought about without ever feeling stale or ridiculous.

A villian in this universe should always consider how a main characters sad life may be relatable to their members of staff.
Plot
I take back what I said about the guild. They're no doubt evil. At least the port mafia cares about the city. The basic plan is if abduction doesn't work, they might as well screw over the whole city. They attempted this twice and thankfully failed twice. The reason as to how murdering people in foreign nation helps francis bring back his dead daughter is just silly Francis, the Guild leader, had Atsushi in his sights willing
...
to work with him and he still decided to destroy the city! Why?! Sure, his rationale is that he could get atushi to break as a result of blaming him for the havoc that was unleashed on the city. He, however, did not consider who might visit him while he's imprisoned. This was considered when bombing the city, what was not considered by the Guild is that someone else other than Atushi might come to wreck their plans. At least the port mafia only kills those who oppose them, not just any random person. So really this season was to show that the port mafia is not the worst of the armed detective agency problems and confirms that there's worse out there. It also explained why Dazai left the Port Mafia and that was great, the show really took its time with the main trio of that section.
Characters
I'll speak about a few characters from this season.
Oda is a fantastic example of a how a simple goal can change everything for someone. He stops murdering people all because he wants to be an author, which is a little bit unconventional but. I assume the reasoning is that with writing you somewhat bring someone to life and what right do you have to do that when you take them with no issue? His story, unfortunately, is a tragedy brought on by the head of the organisation he works for. Nonetheless he's what brings Dazai around to the detective agency in the present day.
Akutugawa and Atshushi continue to mirror each other even if they get immensely offended at that mirroring being mentioned. They're both so desperate to be positively acknowledged, which for Akutugawa he uses violence to get this praise and for Atsushi he saves people. This was gone over in the first season. However it was expanded upon here they find why one is desperate and who the other one is desperate for respectively. Once this is learned they surprisingly use this information to build each other up during their fight.
Animation:
The animation is amazing examples of this are the glasses clinking in episode one, the fight scene between gide and akutagawa and Akutagawa alliance fight with atsushi against Francis.
Music
The music is beautiful, especially with what plays during oda's fight against mimic it is truly a rousing, rising score. It truly captures the sense of a man on a mission. As well as as thar there is also plays When kyouka saves astushi. It starts off tense then becomes hopeful as kyouka expresses what she wants.
Enjoyment:
My enjoyment is at a large high. I'm looking forward to seeing how the agency and the port mafia deal with their new threat and the characters interact in the future.

Ok but why does everyone trauma dump on astushi?
Plot:
There's quite a lot going on here. We have individuals who have super powers, these seem to be based on literary authors and that gives a light bulb moment if you recognise them. The powers range from human to animal transferomation all the way to being able to bring someone back to life from fatal injuries only. The great thing about these abilities is that that while they have their own drawbacks they're still all useful in their own way. The show has the side plot of astushi learning about the others' powers while
...
they solve cases. The over arching plot pertains to how the detective agency and port mafia oppose each which will turn into a rather harsh war between 3 sides in season 2.
Characters:
The cast is while I could speak about them individually it's much simpler to divide them into the 3 groups. 1. The armed detective agency, they're the guys we're rooting for, not because they're actually particularly pure or loving except farm boy but because they'll take everyone in regardless of past. They seem to especially like redeemed wanted criminals. They're rather embedded in their community by giving out gifts after commotion or just being friendly with the local townies. Although so far we haven't seen them fail a mission, they're not like the other 2 groups who will kill or banish members for failing missions. The reason I don't call them good is because they're just not I mean in the 3rd or 2nd episode one of the detective agency members just tries to kill a whole woman because she shot his sister, this of course is a reasonable response to your sisters assumed death, that's not one would expect from a good person hero! The more egregious thing is when most of the main characters of the agency just abandon astushi to his fate. Like Goddamn that is not how you treat your people. The president is cool though. Group 2 is the port mafia, while they do your resident bad guy things like murder, the individual characters have their own personalities and do make their own choices outside of what the port mafia agenda is like letting captives go or chasing after an abducted member. The guild is the 3rd group and while we don't know too much about them, aren't evil perse. They just play both sides since they have money. If you can't pay someone compentent to violently rid you of your enemies you might as well try to pay and get your enemies stuff.
Music:
It's fine, there's nothing breathtaking about it.
Animation:
It's good. The fights are fluid. When assassin girl threw herself out of the train that looked especially nice.
Enjoyment:
The enjoyment is up there, the plot is interesting and I believe the characters and their groups have not shown all of their colours. So I will happily continue with season 2.

Chise goes to school!
Plot:
There is no doubt in my mind that ancient magus bride is definitely a compelling show that has an insane amount of world building going on, with interesting characters. Unfortunately due to the episode length these not properly explored. It leaves a lot of questions . Such as why is silver haired girl considered a failure to her family? Why was it hooded boy who grabbed silver haired girl's arm at the end and not rusty magic boy? Out of all the years of elias' existence how has he not once considered the concept of friendship? What
...
happened to the spiders of abrasive girl's family? How did abrasive girl's borther wind up in the magical thing selling business? Are the twins incestuous? I don't mind, it just felt like they were. What are the twins goals and aspirations? why do they need a master? What are they running away from? It's mentioned that silver hair, blondie girl, and the small boy and girl are always seen together but like that isn't the case as silver hair tends to find Chise when she's on her own and she even does the waste task on her own. What is blondies deal, she cares about silver and that's great but what does she want, why is she at this school? Characters are introduced and there's no shortage of interesting ones however they are not explored to the most satisfying extent. I mean what is hooded boy's magic ability anyway? If I were to actually mention any more plot points there would just be more questions. basically long story short many, many plot points are introduced only one kind paid off.
Characters:
For the most There are more questions than characterisations so I won't actually lay most of them out for you however with snake hair boy It was quite cool to see him purposely take off his headphones to get himself out danger and bond with abrasive girl.
We learn a little bit more about elias like why he decided to have a bride, what his time after he was with lindel was like.
Chise gets slightly murderous as a result of taking Joseph's eye, its not a complete issue yet. She hasn't killed an innocent person so she's got that going for her at least. As well as that she's actively considering what it's like for other people when she puts herself in harms way. So thankfully that characterisation is continuing without question.
Animation:
This also took a hit. Unlike season one which had amazing animation, this season is just meh, this is made especially obvious when flashbacks are shown from the previous season which has gorgeous animation. It's not the worst animation I have ever seen but its nothing like the first season.
Music:
This is also just fine
Enjoyment:
Even with all my complaints, I still enjoyed this show very much and am more than happy to wait for the next season if it comes out. That being said with all the Cliff hangers I can wholeheartedly recommend sinking your time into this since there is a risk we won't get a 3rd season.

Damn Saikawa really lost the battle to be Kanna's top friend.
Plot:
Tohru and Kobayashi are back! It's not just them though it's the full cast! Everyone gets a bit more development and we learn more about them than last season. For example we see what caused the sword in Tohru's back the night she met Kobayashi. It makes Kobayashi consider whether she deserves to be by Tohru's side with how marvelous she is. This consideration is what drives Tohru to say wholeheartedly she loves her. We find out that Elma fights Tohru not out of a serious sense of obligation, but
...
out of a sense of platonic longing. Iruru while decidedly an adult is permitted to live quite childishly due to war preventing her from being a child when she was one. She even gets to have that puppy dog sort of love with the shop keeps grandson! Ilulu's story is quite sweet, she brings joy to someone else, as a result of her own feelings towards a doll she once left behind.
Animation
Just like last season the animation is amazing , as seen with Tohru's hopping in episode 12, The fight scene between Elma and tohru and
The sparkles from tohru and lucoa's arm wrestle.
Music:
The music when people were meeting was absolutely lovely and really brought the scene to life.
Enjoyment:
I think this season ended perfectly! I haven't read the manga so I'm not sure where they go from here but if there is a 3rd season I will check it out.

The best lesbians? Dragons.
Plot:
When a dragon shows up on her doorstep, what's a helpful office worker to do? Well insist she be a maid and live with you, of course! This was surprisingly wholesome, was there fanservice? Yes, though it wasn't a lot and most of the time it wasn't that lewd. I mean saikawa orgasms when she touches kanna but that's besides the point. As stated before it's shockingly sweet, focusingly mostly on torhu's and Kobayashi's relationship. It's quite cute to see how much kobayashi adores torhu even if it isn't shown in big gestures for the most part, just
...
small things like praising torhu when she accommodates herself for guests or thinking about when she didn't complement torhu's cooking when torhu leaves her.
Characters:
Torhu is a dragon, so she's quite amazing in regards to physicality and speed. Afterall she smacks down a robber with a single fist and cracks the ground in doig so. She is less well-versed in our human ways which is where Kobayashi comes in!
Kobayashi,as mentioned before, is a helpful office worker, when push comes to shove and something ridiculous is taking place she stands her ground to stop it. She's a massive dweeb when it comes to maids but it's all apart of her charm. As with most romance fiction tohru makes her reconsider what she wants her life to look like. It all around makes her life better by meeting Tohru.
Music:
The music is fine
Animation:
The animation is brilliant for Movement of the coffee in episode 12, as well as the swinging of tohru's body in episode 13 when she comes back to kobayashi is immensely fluid. The fights scenes while big and flashy are very easy to follow.
Enjoyment:
I quite liked this show, the relationships are well developed and fun to watch. The jokes while they don't all hit and can be basic in some ways are in no way bad. I will definitely be checking out Drago maid S.

, sorcerers and witches, oh my!
Plot:
A suicidal girl and an 8 foot monster mage meet at a (slave?) Auction, what could possibly come out of this? Magic! Both literally and romantically. The show has an excellent balance of world-building and character development. Despite wanting Chise to be his bride, the romantic relationship is a slow one, with kissing not happening until at least 10 episodes in. This gives us time to watch both characters truly grow and develop as partners and a woman and a mage, respectively. To see the one you love grow and improve is the goal of any healthy relationship
...
which is what ancient magus bride shows for Elias and Chise. A rather odd thing that works is the parent-child relationship they initially have lends itself to chise's ability to better conduct herself as one half in their relationship, rather than desperately just attach to what elias does because he bought her.
Characters:
Chise, as mentioned in the plot section, starts as a suicidal girl tormented by her mother's attempted murder of her. By meeting Elias and many others on her journey, she is equipped with the knowledge, skills and items to control her magic ability, she is also equipped with. A better sense of self that wants elias, not just because he gave her a home and a family but because she legitimately loves him and gets lonely without him. In addition, she is no longer suicidal, looking forward to spending and increasing the rest of her days with Elias. This is best shown when a fairy attempts to drown her under the guise of testing her where she saves herself without the help of Elias. Chise's betterment of herself is wonderful to witness.
Elias, while actually bettered by having Chise around is just immoral. He's a mage that suddenly appeared in the woods one day and has no sense of morals beyond if it threatens Chise, its bad. However if it doesn't threaten Chise but she likes too much it needs to go. His jealousy leads to attempted child sacrifice, luckily Chise and him really love each other and he's shown to care about others beyond himself and Chise, he can be forgiven for this one attempt.
Animation:
The animation is stellar the magic always looks amazing and there are always little details in the animation.
Music:
The music is beautiful, for example, lendyl's singing.
Enjoyment:
The enjoyment level for me with this show is high and continutes to raise as i wait for the 2nd season to complete. I will also be checking out the side story.
