Hey, I hope you have a great day! I´m currently adding a short comment to every entry in My Anime List - starting from Z. From now on, I will mostly watch the few interesting seasonal anime and movies that come out.
I use MAL to record my anime/manga progress while giving them a rating (about 600 series and 180 movies watched). I´m open for discussion about the latter part but please don´t take it personal and behave like a decent human being. Thanks. Below are some explanations on my rating system, how I form my opinion and a list for my top series and movies respectively.
General overview over the meaning of my ratings:
10. Masterpiece: A show that reaches the point of subjective perfection due do flawlessy adapting a brilliant idea. They have that certain something lower rated shows are missing.
9. Great/exemplary: These are shows that excel in almost every way, because they are a noticeable step ahead of the rest. Although they may have a few issues, these shows pretty much mastered their genre. They are part of my favorites.
8. Very good: These shows deliver on their premise as well as character, sound, story and art design. They may have a few minor stumbles along the way, but the positives clearly compensate for the flaws. They are recommended for everyone.
7. Good: Shows that deliver a generally positive experience despite a few noticeable flaws. Fluid story, insightful characters and development as well as a good execution are usually notable features of the show. These show can be a bit predictable or resemble existing ones. They are recommended to most people.
6. Okay: These showes are still defined by their flaws, but the good parts slightly outweigh them. They are generally watchable and may have some interesting and creative ideas. The shows can be recommended to fans of the genre.
5. Average: The literal middle of the pack which may have some ideas but could have been better with more time, management, talent, or budget. Positives and flaws outweigh each other for a pretty perfect balance on the scale. Up to this score, shows are generally not recommendable. Also the starting point for ratings.
4. Bad: A show that may have good ideas or good production values, but the writing lacked substance and the ideas were poorly executed. It manages to work somehow, but the flaws markedly outweigh the positives. Also fits for shows that follow a schematic without implementation of own ideas.
3. Very bad: A show with serious issues. Amateur storytelling, terrible visuals, or shallow character writing. Nonetheless, the viewer can identify an idea or two.
2. Horrible: A show that has no redeeming aspects but is not insulting. Ironically achieved being awful.
1. Appalling: A show so offensively bad, the world might be a genuinely better place if it didn’t exist.
How do I form my opinion?
1. Watchability: To what degree was I enjoying the series (general feeling)? Was time going by fast or not (immersion)? Were there moments in time when I was amazed/intrigued/fascinated by or bored/annoyed/upset about certain aspects?
2. Emotionality: How emotionally involving was the series (laughing about comedy, engaged in drama)? Am I reminiscing about the series for days/weeks after finishing it?
3. Art Design: Is the artstyle fitting? How refined is it? What about artstyle-breaks like chibi-animation?
4. Sound Design: What is the quality of voice acting / soundtracks / OP and ED? How is the sound adjusting to what is seen on screen? Does it stay in mind?
5. Content: How are worldbuilding/pacing/dialogues/characters/story? Are they creative/interesting/funny/unique/realistic/understandable/inventive or are they insufficient/predictable/boring/irritating? How crucial are the strengths and flaws of the series? Are there additional aspects worth mentioning (fanservice, parody)?
