Without a single friend, middle schooler Kon Chigawa lives on a small island and laments that she hasn't "fallen in love" yet, unlike her classmates. She often plays by "the Hole", a cave near the sea where a man-eating monster lives, according to folk tales. One day, as she meets with another girl who accidentally drops her smartphone in the sea, they fall from a cliff together but miraculously survive. It turns out Furuka is also all alone. In order to deal with karma demons, monsters which devour people and become corrupted by "taint," villages call Taintspawn, humans who choose to kill karma demons, although it means absorbing the "taint" of their prey. After a particularly bad case of the runs, he meets a woman named Hanae at a restaurant, who is very knowledgeable about nutrition, and helps him have a light meal that won't upset his stomach.
