In the year 1971, shoujo manga was beginning to get popular, with many new mangaka, many of them being women, changing the comic industry in Japan by writing stories aimed at women. The tides were turning swiftly, but none more so than the debut of Riyoko Ikeda's masterpiece, The Rose of Versailles. With its lush artwork, sweeping storyline spanning several decades, telling the rise and fall of French queen Marie Antoinette in the years before the French Revolution, accompanied by a strong, charismatic, fearless but still human female lead in Oscar, Rose of Versailles exploded in popularity all across the world, with many hailing it ...

Versailles no Bara is a masterclass in how to write historical fiction.

The story stays mostly true to what we know of history, but the author takes a few liberties in the way she introduces certain characters and how they interact. She also decides what rumors she'll make fact or fiction (in her story), which is the right thing to do in my opinion: if you had to leave every doubt unanswered, the series would quickly become pointless and unsatisfying. Ikeda also introduces a couple of completely new characters to spice things up, Oscar and André, both of which fit perfectly in Versailles' world of romance ...

Now this is a true romantic tragedy. Marie Antoinette's end is widely known, and yet as you read through this historic drama you'll often forget the looming dark clouds over her and Fersen. The addition of another main character, Lady Oscar (good luck not being charmed by her) with her own love story ends up working as a parallel to the queen's life. Another person who can't follow the desires of the heart, but unlike the queen she has more freedom, having grown up as a man, and ultimately following the revolution through another lens.
I used to watch the anime with my mum when I ...

After many years reading mostly shônen, I decided to dive in the world of shôjo. What could be a better start than "Versailles no Bara" (or "Lady Oscar" as we smartly translated) ?
This 70's manga is known to have brought a whole new dimension to shôjo and I think any reader can see why, even today, even not knowing much about shôjo.

First of all, it's not reduced to a bunch of love stories in Versailles with nobles in beautifull clothes. It has a strong historic context (french revolution) with all ingredients that come with it : battles, conspiracies, bloody deaths, politic, social and economic portrait ...

Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (56/82 chp)
La Rose de Versailles is a beautiful and emotionally rich work, set in a medium often associated with excessiveness and melodrama. It uses these very traits to its advantage, weaving a story filled with passion and intensity that perfectly complements the historical backdrop it draws from. However, this same emotional depth and dramatic flair might prove to be prohibitive for some audiences, especially those who are less inclined toward heavily stylized storytelling. Yet, for those willing to embrace its grandeur, it offers an experience unlike any other.

With that said, let’s explore what this manga is about and the themes it seeks to convey. We’ll discuss ...

I became interested in reading The Rose of Versailles manga a few years ago after finishing the anime, only to discover that it wasn’t legally available to read in English! Finally, though, Udon Entertainment finished publishing their (needlessly expensive) hardcover editions, and I’ve managed to complete my readthrough!

I really enjoyed reading The Rose of Versailles. It feels like a grand, romantic tale, featuring melodrama and stellar artwork in abundance. It’s easy to grasp the massive mark that this series has had on the Shoujo genre; the characters feel their emotions with such intensity, and every shifting mood is highlighted by sudden rays of light and ...

Today’s review is for Riyoko Ikeda’s Rose of Versailles (also known as Lady Oscar in Europe), one of the most influential and revolutionary works of the 70s.

Among the first major manga written and drawn by a woman, and part of a series of projects that promoted shōjo manga as a significant genre, it owes its success to its unique setting, iconic heroine Oscar and its radical (for its time) ideas.

Note: parts of section [1.b] could be considered as spoilers, but someone knowledgeable in French history may already have an idea. Proceed with caution.

Preliminary (72/82 chp)
I'm going to have a difficult time giving this manga a 9, since I truly loved it from beginning to end. One could say I'm being generous and that this manga deserves even lower, but I still think highly of it as it intertwines different themes into one being. For the first manga I've ever read being from 1970's, it certainly changed my view of manga from that time period.

When I came to know Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, I fell in love. I mean, everyone loved her, but the reader is no exception. A person gets to see her explore the emotions that ...

This is a review for both the anime/manga, There are sparring differences between anime and manga, the first episode was completely its own thing different from it's manga, even tho most people liked it, It kind of alters the whole point of Oscar's motive

Here we are introduced with a beautiful, charming, elegant but a strong young girl named Oscar who lives in France as she is the daughter of a general who was expecting a boy but instead got a girl baby, whom he later trains under his supervision in order to compete in a male dominant field of military

So to start with, Rose ...
