Frequently they say to me, "I don't like shoujo"—as if an entire demographic of manga magazines that have been publishing for decades are only capable of writing one type of story. A selection of particularly interesting manga created for a female audience. Includes both modern and classic titles from a variety of different genres. Here are all the shoujo manga I think one should read in order to cover all bases. I organized this list by general theme, with publishing series at the bottom. The art nouveau movement features an elegant aesthetic that I wish was in more media. shoujos that I couldn't stop reading after I started (doesn't always mean that they are unproblematic because well we're talking about shoujo and josei here, there's always at least something minor that can bother you BUT I promise these aren't the worst ever) These manga have sequels or otherwise tell stories spanning many years, eventually following descendants of the original protagonists. Whether it be beautiful, sad, cruel or happy, these titles follow a character across multiple years of their life, observing them being slowly shaped into... something. |
