While not always the case, these characters sometimes must overcome challenges or societal stigma associated with the Age Gap. - No Fully Gag or iyashikei Manga, so No NNB, Barakamon or Aria Shounen manga are known to fall back on a handful of "traditional" shounen sub-categories: battles (whether they are historical, fantastical, gang fights, military, space wars, or collectible monsters who fight in the protagonist's stead), school comedies, male-centered (or pandering) fantasy adventures with either a powerful male protagonist or an eye-candy female protagonist, and of course the usual harems, yuri, and fanservice. (Can't forget the waifus!) But some series don't follow a standard shounen formula, to the point of feeling like it belongs to another genre entirely. Worldbuilding - "the process of constructing a world, originally an imaginary one, sometimes associated with a fictional universe." These kinds of manga are usually set in a fantasy and/or sci-fi world, and excel at establishing & showcasing the rules/history/economy of their fictional universe. The main characters in these stories are bought at an auction, sold at a slave market, or exchanged for cash or other goods in a private sale. Many purchased protagonists are victims of human trafficking or forced marriages, although some people willingly sell themselves to pay a debt, help someone they love, or escape what they feel is an even worse fate. Characters can be bought for a variety of different reasons, including cases where good samaritans pay specifically to rescue slaves and liberate them from slavery. some kind of romantic relationship between human and non-human (yokai girl, monster girl, vampire girl, alien girl, ghost girl, demon girl, etc). Manga adaptations of classical works as well as stories about people in higher education with a DA aesthethic or people appreciating the arts with an old aesthethic. So I won't include something such as Blue Period because the aestehthic doesn't fit but it does thematically. But this is an aesthethic, and since it's Eurocentric I have to be a bit liberal with my definition. While the gender of authors doesn’t matter in either way or demographic, I have always been fascinated about female mangaka who have managed to weave incredible stories among male competitors in the Shounen genre. And most of them have been very successful regardless of reader demographics. So I wanted to create a list of works for that reason.
