I hesitated to download Lucky-kun's scanlation, which was done by the wonderful Half-baked Scanlations, because it was Takaguchi-sensei's earliest BL work. I wondered how good it could be and suspected it would be dated.

Well, Mura's hairstyle is indeed dated, but that's the only thing in this wonderful story that doesn't stand the test of time. In fact, after reading the seven scanlated chapters as of today, the hair doesn't even bother me anymore.

What's to like? Beautiful, clean art, likable, believable characters, and a humorous and touching story. The women I shared the story with have differing opinions about whether Mura or his step-brother Subaru ... is more lovable, but everyone seems to agree that Mura's mother and girlfriend are both stand-out side characters, and the group of friends that Mura hangs out with at school are always fun to watch.

The feelings are raw and realistic. Mura and Subaru seem like real adolescents (even if the girls at their high school seem like over-the-top caricatures of us, the adoring yaoi readers).

Another great aspect of the story is the detail--look for locker decorations, read Hina's magazine, and scan Mura's room as you go from panel to panel. You'll find lots to make you laugh.

I don't think I'll ever forget Lucky-kun. I'm really grateful I decided to take the plunge.
