Leiji Matsumoto is one of the great masters of the space opera, and this is one of his first. The main character, Harlock, is one of anime's iconic heroes,having appeared in many films, ovas, and TV series over the decades. If you want to see his start, here it is.

Cool series with that classic Leijiverse charm, just know going in that the manga was never finished. I believe the TV show did finish, so go watch that. Alternatively, the movie Arcadia of my Youth is great and features the same characters, though the scenario is unrelated.

This is a relatively short story when compared to long running Shonen works, the Seven Seas English adaptation is published in 3 large volumes, despite this, the characters are very well fleshed out with even the most minor characters showing their ideals and personality in their breve appearances.
