Japan's Shōwa era lasted from 1926 to 1989. In 2009, Asahi Shimbun announced a polled list of 50 of the greatest 'masterpieces(名作)' of the Shōwa era. The only one not listed on MAL yet is 'Iga no Kagemaru' by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, which was ranked 27th.

“We need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.”
- Kafka

Being one of my favorite classic writter, Kafka is also well know in the world for his enormous impact on the culture (not only in the litterature tho)

As said in the quote, Kafka thought that we need books that ''affect us like a disaster". Here is my list of manga that effected me a lot. Short list for now but I'm constantly trying to read this kind of stories so there will be updates.

Of course, big Trigger Warning, most of the folliwing stories aren't very pleasant to read, you may have trouble while reading them, depend on your sensibility and your traumas.

This list is pretty much just a compilation of all Aoyama's recommendations (Detective Picture Book segment), it's on the dust jacket of every Detective Conan manga volume, it lists also his favourite book/episode/chapter from the series, I'll be listing all the manga, or manga related ones, but please check out the full list if you are interested in detective fiction!

https://www.detectiveconanworld.com/wiki/Detective_Picture_Book

Just a fair warning, there's a lot of Japanese detectives, and sometimes famous ones like Poirot and Miss Marple that have been adapted as anime, this list is only for manga (And some light novels), but I might make one for anime at some point. I was going over the list and noticed Millionaire Detective was adapted from a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui (He also wrote A Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Paprika! It's a small world huh) I'm not going to include it in this list, but I just thought I'd let you know.

Another point while I was compiling it, a lot of these are unknown outside of Japan, and I personally can't read Japanese (Maybe in the future!), I've tried doing my best in finding related material, however If I missed any, I apologise. Please also forgive me for not providing more in-depth descriptions, I like detective fiction, however a lot of these I haven't heard or read, please check them out if you are interested in any.

If you have any criticism, I'll do my best to fix any mistakes, thank you!

First of all, not every movie adaption is good as their original source manga. Also, not every movie in this list is on the level of Rurouni Kenshin, but they are still solid and fun to watch.

Manga somehow related to Clamp: referenced in their works and mentioned in interviews.

Not on MAL:
Macaroni Horenso by Tsubame Kamogawa (mentioned in xxxHolic)
Comet-san by Mitsuteru Yokoyama (Kobato inspiration)
Kyonyuu Hunter - Ohkawa likes this but I'm unsure about the author, I'm gonna assume it's the one by Kouichiro Yasunaga
