First of all, nekoten definitely worth ur time if u r free and looking for something lighthearted to relax urself; but it is nothing near master piece tho…
Nekoten is about cat n their owner who been given the power to protect human from monster... and no, this manga is not about school life, it is full with supernatural n fighting scene
Suitable for people that:
- Love cat
- Like cute drawing
- Like fantasy (monster & supernatural creature)
...
- Like action & fighting scene (fist, sword, supernatural power; but don’t expect magic chanting that kind of things...)
- Don’t like horror, violent, and over emotional
Not suitable for people that:
- looking for something epic, or hardcore
- looking for mindless comedy or jokes
- looking for very deep, complex story, character development, and romance
- prefer blood splashing over ur screen o.O
- Don’t have excess time for mediocre manga
- Hoping for fanservice or something ecchi (lol)
Actually I hope my review will give u enough idea just by reading above summary (that is what I hope to achieve as an effective review), but if u have plenty of time, feel free to read more ;p
Story – 7.5/10
“Yumi enrolls at Matabi. After the entrance Ceremony a Monster suddenly appears atking her. Given a mysterious power Yumi and her cat Kasuke strive into battle (I just copy paste the synopsis) after that, together with 6 other pair of students and cats, Yumi fights to protect the school and perhaps the world”… lol… so u can see, the story setting itself is nothing special… just that instead of human, we have cats with superpower lol
Another weak point is the plot seems to have too much emphasized on fighting scene (too much monsters to kill n too much cats to show off their power lol), causing this manga to be lacked of storyline and character developments. These two things definitely prevent this manga from becoming a master piece.
Good things r, the whole manga isn’t that long (5 volumes), the whole storyline is well planned (all plots r inter-connected), straight forward, fast paced, no excess filler (so sry if u r looking for hotspring, beach or pool scene), neither over emotional nor violent, consistent (the plot wont fall downhill in the middle or at the end), not over cliché, and most importantly, the ending isn’t messed up or rushed.
Art – 9/10
The drawing is the main strength of nekoten. The character drawing style is unique, and very cute, n u won’t get clones where every characters r similar except their cloths, hair style n color. Each cats n monsters r also unique n well-drawn. The fighting scenes r well-drawn n well-conducted, along with suitable special effects. The only weak point that I can found is its backgrounds, which is a bit empty, but not really noticeable.
Character – 8/10
Each characters, cats, and even some of the monsters have their unique characteristic or trait. Most of them r not very deep, but some of them will definitely grow on u.
Well… we can see that the author put quite a lot of effort in character development between characters, between cats n their owners, between monsters n characters, and even between monsters themselves. But given only 5 volumes, there isn’t enough space to cover up all 7 pairs of cats n their owner, not to mention all those monsters n side characters… but I do believe the author can do better if this manga is longer.
Enjoyment – 8/10
Enjoyments are mostly come from the characters interactions n developments. There r times where the comedy will crack a smile on ur face (but u won’t rolling on the floor laughing tho…), times where u will feel all cozy in ur heart, as well as times where u will feel sry for the characters (even the monsters). The fighting scene is very entertaining but not over violent and the storyline is lighthearted n wont make u feel depressed. However, u won’t find any epic moment in this manga tho…
Overall – 8.5/10
Again, this manga is nothing near masterpiece but if this manga is ur cup of tea, n u r looking for something short (staring at those shounen manga) n lighthearted, try nekoten.
Hmm… don’t know how my first review end up hella long like this… but thanks if u have read all, n give urself an claps o_o (thx too even if u only read the first summary)

Honestly have to say that this is a stealer! Lovely art and unique plot! One of my new favorites.
I have been following for a year now, and the manga has not let me down yet. If you don't like the characters, which are sort of okay, then you will surely fall for the lovely art, which is the same as the Darker than Black~Shikkoku no Hana. I love the cats (even though they are not my favorite animals) and like the idea of talking to them and other animals as well! Giving them unique powers? What an awesome idea! A couple of years ago, I picked this manga up on a whim because I had a buy three, get one free deal at Borders, thinking very little of it. At this point in my manga buying tenure, I was in a bad mood. Del Rey canned their manga division, which spelled the end of Princess Resurrection and Yozakura Quartet being released in the U.S., Kurohime was promising for several early volumes before becoming a lousy Inuyasha clone, and I reached my breaking point with Bleach. Suffice to say, I have been down on shonen-style manga and anime for quite some time. They go on
