Also sometimes labelled as a splatter, the main focus of the manga is well the blood, guts and dismembered body parts. Shock is a key element of this genre. Movies such as the SAW series are famous for the difficult-to-watch torture sequences, but what a bout the manga? This list is compiled of some of the most gory manga I have seen that aren't pornographic.

For part 2: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/19694
For sequel series: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2415

This is only the series with over 100 chapters, there are many more titles available with less than 100 chapters which are also great series worth reading, this is only for those who might want some longer series.

It only says website in the title, but there’s also an app, however not every series is available on the app.

No sequel series were added to the list (Tokyo ghoul, Jojo’s), because they’re in the sequel series interest stack (and there’s no room anyway).

You can read all of the series with every chapter for $2.

The only series without every chapter available for free are:
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (Chapters are added as the volumes are released) NOT LIKELY TO GET ANY MORE VOLUMES.

These are the series only available on the website:
Golden Kamuy
Jigokuraku (Hell’s Paradise)

There are manga that are so amazingly well done that they set the bar a tad too high for any anime adaptation. But then there are attempts to bring them to the screen that go beyond that and don't stop at failing to meet expectations: they're outright lazy, shoddy, phoned-in cash grabs that drain the source material of what made it so good to begin with.

If you seek to have a good time, you must, at all costs, read these manga as they are and avoid any adaptations like plague. Do yourself a favor.

The list includes titles that have received pointless fragmentary adaptations in form of short OVAs and the like that fail to represent the original in any meaningful form.

The list doesn't include bad adaptations of manga that isn't great enough to warrant a recommendation to begin with.

More entries will be added in the future. Existing entries are subject to revision.

See also the opposite of this list: Manga adaptations made with love and care: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2345.

Note: One-Punch Man is a special case as it's present on both this list and the one linked above. This is because its first season is an improvement on the manga experience but the second, produced by a different team, is a horrible mess. For Berserk, the old (1997) adaptation is decent, albeit still inferior to the manga, but all the newer ones range from merely subpar to atrocious garbage.

This list constitutes my personal views and stances. If something isn't on it, it likely means I haven't read the original or am not familiar enough with its adaptation(s) to have a qualified opinion. Feel free to shoot me suggestions via DMs, but make sure you have a convincing argument if it's not something that's already on my main manga/anime list. I don't promise it'll end up here, but I will consider all suggestions.

Number of sales and date that number was acquired from in notes for each. Some of them I have personally estimated a higher figure than the date says.

No. 98 is Gaki Deka, but I couldn't find it. It has sold 30 million (November 16th, 2017), and was made by Tatsuhiko Yamagami and the publisher is Akita Shoten.

No. 99 says Jingi, but it seems to be Tachihara Ayumi's other work Maji! due to the dates and amount of volumes.

Go Nagai's Devilman is one of the most influential manga of all time. A seminal effort in both themes and tone, it set the standard and paved the way for the gory, edgy stories popular today among the teenagers and young adults. You'd be surprised just how many of them trace their thematic lineage to the ol' Devilboi.

How to quickly recognize a Devilman-inspired story:
* the protagonist somehow ends up imbued with some kind of dark power that makes them stronger at the expense of their humanity;
* having said power influences their personality and/or physique in a major way;
* it is used to combat antagonists having powers of a similar or identical origin who seek to prey on the protagonist or the humankind in general;
* although the protagonist is aligned with humankind, his powers make other people afraid of him or try to use him for their own benefit;
* death, violent dismemberment, grotesque imagery, and other fun hijinks ensue;
* some sort of a major betrayal is expected.

There could be other, less obvious parallels, like the religious symbolism or anti-war themes.

I won't be including every single title I'm aware of here—only the good/notable ones. If you aren't sure how the stories in question relate to Devilman, feel free to find it in the list of recommendations and read what people say there. I won't be annotating this list to avoid spoilers.

Honorable mention: Kemonozume, an anime-only series by Masaaki Yuasa that is basically a beat-by-beat copy of Devilman. Many years later Yuasa was brought on board to direct an actual adaptation of Devilman.

This list constitutes my personal views and stances. If something isn't on it, it likely means I haven't seen it or don't have an informed opinion on the matter. Feel free to shoot me suggestions via DMs, but make sure you have a convincing argument if it's not something that's already on my main manga/anime list. I don't promise it'll end up here, but I will consider all suggestions.

With so much amazing anime and manga out there, a person can only reasonably expect to watch and read a small percentage of it. Sometimes, you have to choose whether you're going to experience a series as a manga or as an anime. In some cases, the two are equally high quality, and the choice comes down to what's more convenient for you. But there are also a lot of anime you should skip for the manga.

Often, these underwhelming anime could have been great, but they never finished fully adapting the manga's storyline, which means that relying on the anime alone will result in an unsatisfactory viewing experience. This is the case with Btooom!, Deadman Wonderland, Wandering Son, Gangsta, and more. Sometimes, the story not only didn't finish, it also left out tons of interesting information - A Centaur's Life is so much more complex than the anime gives it credit for! Then there are anime like One Piece that are genuinely enjoyable, but are so long that you might be better off reading the manga if you're a new fan who wants to understand the series without taking on what is basically a part time job.

Which of these anime would you skip in favor of the manga?
