Like any fan of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica would be, I was excited when I looked on ANN and found out about the creation of this spin off, and although Oriko's story isn't on the same level as Madoka's, I wasn't disapointed.
Warning: As this is a spin off series, there will be spoilers of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, also refered to as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, in here.
Unfortunetly, the plot is easily the weakest point. Taking place in one of the different time zones. There, instead of witches, Kyouko and Mami are having to fight against a Black Magical Girl, a magical girl who

Oriko magica is a manga that you should only read if your a fan of Madoka Magica, and even then it's barely worth the read. The manga will only explain who the 3 new characters are, and relies on the readers knowledge of the events in the anime. This is all well and good, however whats below is not.
The first thing you'll probably notice when you read this is the bad art style the characters look often awkwardly drawn in. While it could be a lot worse, it could also be a lot better. While the style isn't as bad as the Meguca scenes ... Nov 18, 2013
Let me give every reader a brief and detailed warning before you start reading this manga, watch(or read) the parent story first before anything else if you want to know what the fuss is about.
With that said, onwards to the review. Mahou Shoujo Oriko Magica is a pseudo-prequel/alternative version of the manga Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica which is an adaptation of an anime of the same name (confusing, right?). Before we talk about anything else about the story, let us make a brief and detailed reason why alternative versions tend to be off-putting than our parent story counterparts. Alternative versions of a story tend to be that ... Feb 1, 2015
If there's one thing I must give the Madoka franchise credit for, it's creating a world that allows spin-offs like Oriko Magica to take advantage of. However, just because a spin-off uses the same world doesn't mean that it should abandon any aspirations to be unique. In fact, it should aspire to contribute to the overall franchise in a meaningful way. So a question must be asked: Does Oriko's series contribute anything? Well, let's find out.
Story Oriko Magica isn't so much of a spin off as it is a cling on, as it never truly leaves to the parent story's setting. Old characters from the ... Aug 3, 2013
While finding myself with some extra time on hand, I thought I'd go through reading the various manga adaptations and spin-offs of Madoka Magica, and with this particular one I felt that I wasted my time.
First off, the story wasn't too well constructed, and I found myself reading a few pages here and there to try to grasp what was going on. Perhaps I found a bad translation, but I think it also might just be poor writing. The plot and motives felt a little too forced, and the characters introduced were kind of m'eh to me. Looking specifically at the characters, overall they struck me ... Feb 28, 2015
It's a familiar tale. A writer writes a really good story, and it is successful. There are people who want to keep milking the story and the world for all its worth so they write a spin off series. But as with so many spin-offs the writers of this spin-off completely fail to understand what made Madoka Magica good in the first place.
First off they condense the interesting and lovable characters of the first series into their most simplistic forms so they can be really dull background characters to the new characters. Honestly the new characters are kind of boring and dry, I found it ... Sep 15, 2018
I picked this up because I'm a fan of the to the stars fanfic, which features characters from this Manga. I was disappointed. Not because the art is kind of ugly (it is, but I could overlook that if the rest were okay). And not because the story is bad. The problem is that the story was mostly incomprehensible. The manga is simply incompetently drawn. It's hard to tell who is who, where a scene takes place, how much time has passed.
I think the basic story idea is good, but if you were to take parts of the relevant chapters from the above mentioned fanfic, ... Jan 17, 2016
This manga prequel to Madoka Magica does an excellent job at living up to its predecessor's bizarre combination of horror, cuteness, and tragedy. There are some faults in the art, but other than that, both the story & character are solid, and if you're a fan of the anime, you'll like the manga.
The story is decent and firm, it's not the best or the most original, but it holds through pretty well and the author does a good job at telling it. It's been almost a year since I read it, and I still get goosebumps due to the ending. The art... let's just say some ... Jun 5, 2024
The second of the numerous spinoff manga of hit anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Oriko Magica follows Kyoko Sakura as she kills yet another witch in Mitakihara City. Only this time, there's a survivor, a young girl named Yuma. Against her better judgement, Kyoko takes Yuma under her wing, but someone is murdering magical girls, and there might be a larger plan than simple serial killing at work. . .
This is probably the best of the Madoka spinoffs up until this point chronologically. The villains has an interesting motivation and some cool powers and it's fun to see a softer side of Kyoko and ... |
