This manga prequel to Madoka Magica does an excellent job at living up to its predecessor's bizarre combination of horror, cuteness, and tragedy. There are some faults in the art, but other than that, both the story & character are solid, and if you're a fan of the anime, you'll like the manga.
The story is decent and firm, it's not the best or the most original, but it holds through pretty well and the author does a good job at telling it. It's been almost a year since I read it, and I still get goosebumps due to the ending.
The art... let's just say some
...
panels are better than others. There are some scenes that are decently drawn and pretty, while there are others that looked poorly done. Both Oriko and Kiriko's character designs were pretty neat; but overall, it's nothing special.
The characters are all three dimensional, with their motivations and their flaws. There is no good side nor bad side, both have their reasons for doing what they're doing. Oriko (the titular antagonist) is no saint and does many horrible things throughout the story, but with the sole purpose of the greater good (sacrificing some lives to save many more).
Tl;dr you buy and you read.

There are cute girls and badass tanks, 10/10!
More seriously, this anime is something of a mixed bag. If you're looking for a strong story and complex characters, you're going to be disappointed. On the other, if you're mainly interested in the tank battles and an average story with cute girls, this show will be fantastic. The tanks are the main premise that this anime is built and falls on, and it does it remarkably well.
In contrast to other works in the mecha musume genre (e.g "Strike Witches," "Upotte!!," etc.) this anime is mostly free from fanservice, which was much appreciated.
Unfortunately, the anime falls
...
flat on both story & characters. The story is a bland, generic sports plot line where a ragtag team of underdogs goes up against teams with much more experience and better equipment, and come out winning on sheer force of perseverance. Were it not for the tanks, this would likely be just another generic sports anime.
Some of the background characters such as Erwin and Caesar (history nerds nicknamed after Erwin Rommel and Julius Caesar respectively) are memorable, and I honestly wish the anime had been centered around them. The main characters are easily forgettable, despite attempts to get us to sympathize and relate to them.
But this anime is about tanks, so what about tanks, you might ask? The thing that saves this anime from being a generic sports anime is the tanks. They're bloody fantastic. They really did their jobs researching the various tanks and putting them into the anime. As a history nerd, I've got to appreciate the massive amount of detail they put into the various vehicles, from the American Sherman, to the German StuG, and even the Italian P40. It gets such a high rating in art from me primarily because of how much detail was put into the tanks.
If you're a history nerd or someone interested in armored fighting vehicles, this anime is the one for you. But if you're primarily interested in plot and characters, this probably isn't going to do it for you.

This was an anime that I really wanted to get into; both the art and the story showed promise, but after finishing it, it struck me as poor, disappointing, and even disgusting.
Besides sex, the characters just don't have anything that really connects them, their entire relationship centers entirely around fucking (if you'll pardon my language). The beginning of the show is sort of sweet, and could lead one to believe that they're forming an emotional bond, but it never really goes anywhere besides them asserting they love one another and having sex.
One of the most disturbing parts was when Aaya straight out raped Kiiko against
...
her will. While hentai can blur the lines between consent and non-consent, there is no blurry line being toed here (i.e she drugged her unconscious, tied her up, and proceeded to have sex with her against her will) any judge in charge of this case would send her away for years.
Some people might bring up the incest scene, but at least there was some emotional and rational reasoning behind "my brother's is likely about to die and is in love with me, so I want to sacrifice my own comfort for him," as opposed to "I'm going to drug the girl I love, tie her up, and then force her to have sex against her will."
Another peeve is that there are no nude scenes in this anime. You might find this hypocritical since I just criticized it's sex scenes, but were this a romantic anime, I wouldn't be bothered. But as I just mentioned, this entire show and the girls' relationship centers around them having sex, so they might as well show it.
While the art was simplistic, it felt sufficient to tell the story, and there was a sort of solipsistic atmosphere centered around the girls. Overall, this had some potential, but it sacrificed it for sex they didn't even show. I can't think of any benefit that someone could get out of watching this anime, either emotionally, story-based, or even kink.
