Nana to Kaoru: Black Label series begins 8 months in the future of the parent version, with Nana and Kaoru in the summer of their final year of high school.

Nana is a normal teenage girl in her last year of high school getting ready for college admissions tests during her summer vacation, with the exception of one thing: She takes "breathers" with her childhood friend, Kaoru. An encounter with Tachibana, a worker she knows at an S&M shop, brings Nana further into the S&M world as she learns what it means to be master and slave.

For This Review Im gonna keep it short

I'm a big fan of Nana to Kaoru, but the ending was just bad in my opinion, not enough romantic evolution in there relationship, and I just didn't like a lot of the stuff that was happening in the story such as the creep at the end Koaru moving away etc; it really brought the story down for me. I have just read Nana to Kaoru and Nana to Kaoru: Black Label back to back and whilst I found the original work to be Great the sequel is lack luster. On it's own or as a side story not set after the events of the original I'd probably say it's very good but as a sequel it is flawed. I have two main issues with Black Label as a sequel. The first is the change of setting from their Highschool and normal lives to a countryside house. The second is the focus on SM rather than on the relationship. Let me explain what I ... mean.

The main conflict of Nana to Kaoru is Kaoru's own feelings of inadequacy. He feels that he cannot walk as an equal with Nana but not in their SM sessions but in society itself. What is important to Kaoru is not the SM itself, it's always been about being able to be with Nana. To love her openly, to always be with her, to not obstacle her dreams and to be recognized as someone who can do that. That recognition is society's recognition. It's not Nana's. Remove society and there is no reason why Kaoru couldn't be with Nana as there would be no one to judge their differences. Through their "breathing" sessions both are quite aware of how they feel for each other, they doubt but they also know. Ergo, the problem isn't Nana or her feelings towards Kaoru. The problem is how society wouldn't accept them because on paper Nana is way out of his league.

The change of setting and the focus on SM in Black Label do absolutely nothing to deal with this main issue nor progress their relationship. Everything in Black Label is done far away from the societal scrutiny of their daily lives. Sure, there is the own societal view of the country side where Black Label takes place and it has a more favorable view upon Nana and Kaoru being together but it is too removed from their actual lives. Kaoru needs society to accept him as someone who could be with Nana and that was exactly what was beginning to happen at the end of the original work.

A proper sequel should have resolved the remaining issues of the original work. The setting should have been that of the end of high school or beginning of University to answer the question, what will happen once high school is over? Will Koaru have managed to catch up his studies in order to follow Nana to university? Will society accept him as someone who can be with Nana? Will Koaru and Nana ever voice their feelings? Will they start dating as Koaru would like? Black Label makes very little headway in answering any of these questions.

Instead the focus is on the SM, with Kaoru and Nana learning from Sarashina (The SM writer Koaru adores) and Tachibana (the beautiful sex store manager who helped our MC in the original work). The two of them have had a SM relationship for 10 years and are completely in love. Yet, they don't voice their insecurities and feelings, leaving it to their SM sessions to transmit their feelings. By the end of Black Label, they do voice their love, insecurities, and feelings and as such develop as an ordinary couple rather than just their role as Dom and Sub. Despite this bloody example of preaching one thing but acting the opposite and finally reaching happiness Nana and Kaoru learn nothing. They still can't voice their love and therefore everything is left to their SM sessions to transmit their feelings. They do kiss as part of their SM session so I guess there is some progress in that department. However, it remains as something they can only do as part of their SM routine and therefore has only a limited impact on their relationship.

As in the original the art and characters are very good.

I don't want to go on a rant so I'll try to keep this short. I'll start this off by say, if you are hoping to read this series for the kinky factor and mostly just that than I think you'll like this a lot? Maybe? I'm not really into S&M so those segments didn't do much for me outside the first few sessions but obviously if you are into that stuff then by all means enjoy.

If you're a poor hopeless romantic idiot like me who is going into this expecting a well told romance story with a kinky factor and amazing character ...
