I’ve literally been drawing blanks on how to start off this review for the past 4 hours. It’s not like this manhwa isn’t impressionable or good — in fact, it’s the opposite — but I have so many things I do want to appreciate about this horror manga that even my scaredy-cat can enjoy.
To speak of the horror, it isn’t the kind where it’s gruesome or off-putting, but rather the supernatural (no duh, it’s in the title). It’s the creepy kind that gives you chills, and I’ll hand it to this manhwa, there are moments where I audibly gulped due to how well-drawn some
...
of the creepy images were.
Though, this manga does fail to create a more stable mysterious/horror mood, as it’s quite heavy on its comedy. Sometimes the actions of the ghost themselves are pretty funny, and almost all of the resolutions are done in a comedic/light-hearted tone. This sort of works and doesn’t work to the story’s favor, as it does ruin a lot of tension, but it’s sort of a trade off: suspense/fear for entertainment.
I briefly covered the plot with it being a bit silly at times, yet it’s also relatively well-balanced. The author loves his foreshadowing, as a lot of details or previous scenes come into play for the mc’s eventual dilemma, which is partly good. Some of the foreshadowing is subtle, which is more enjoyable, but other times the author inserts a plot mechanic right in the reader’s faces, which makes the resolutions a bit more anticlimactic.
The pacing is pretty slow, as some arcs could span up to 20+ chapters with no end in sight, but it’s all pretty engaging, as each mystery kinda leaves an intrigue on how the mc faces this current dilemma, even if it is a bit silly.
As for the characters themselves, some have been inserted and developed well, while others were not. The mc’s progression is pretty nice throughout the story, as he isn’t immediately a “do-it-all.” As for the supporting characters, besides for 2 of them, every other character desperately needs work, as they sort of appear and disappear at the whims of importance to the mc, leaving a plot convenience feel to them.
What can I say but this was pretty entertaining. There are quite a bit of cliches and anticlimactic moments, but you really can’t go wrong with this manga if you enjoy a lighter side to the horror genre. Well, it’s still spooky enough to avoid reading at night, though (at least for me because I’m a wuss).
