I have only ever reviewed something when I truly love and adore it. This manga is one of such things. It's a slow-paced romance that centers its plot around building a relationship between a kouhai and his senpai in their extra-curricular activities. One of the few mangas that will feel so incredibly rewarding for getting invested into the characters, and every new chapter is just an exponential improvement from the last. And assuming this keeps at an upwards trend to the climax, this will become something special, and will have an anime adaptation for it in the future.

In the romance genre of manga, Houkago Kitaku Biyori confidently falls into the categories of drama-free and wholesome. Accompanied by cute, high-quality art and consistently compelling chapters, all of that would be enough to hook a five or six out of ten from me. The extra digits, however, come from the incredibly well crafted yet subtle character development that tacitly propels the story forward. Despite being a quiet and standoffish MC, Shun Satou is no stereotypical blank face. An alright fluff romance manga; I don’t love this as much as others, but it’s still enjoyable at times. The characters are probably some of the most hit or miss aspect about the story; here’s the rundown: Quirky girl meets an emotionless boy, and he eventually changes because of her, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, this type of concept has been done countless times to mild to great success, but this manga didn’t leave that much of an impression on me due to how forced some of the developments were.
