A fleeting 3-volume series, charming and occasionally profound.
The manga presents short, touching character vignettes that slowly lead us to a bigger concluding thread.
Death, human purpose and loneliness are in focus, but without too much existential heavy-lifting.
I love the art style and want to own the physical volumes.
The mangaka has a lovely way of making 1 or 2 panels carry the important and emotional moments, which gives more impact to the artwork.
There's an effort to deepen the setting, not quite worldbuilding, but an intriguing end times atmosphere.
...
It's a beautiful and tasteful manga, maybe too tasteful?
Even with such a raw visual aesthetic and a fixation on death, this manga never really goes 'full manga' in terms of exaggerating its extremes -- it almost feels like an indie graphic novel/comic/zine type of work.
That's definitely refreshing, but I wonder what could have been if the bleak or strange elements were pushed even further.
Sukaraiti (katakana) or 'Skalighty' is a personal favorite for me, it fits my tone/vibe preferences super well.
It's pretty niche, but there are types who enjoy hidden hidden gems (hidden²), and types who will resonate with the lonely, sentimental mood. I'm here for all of that.
