If you're looking for a scary bone chilling thriller... this isn't it.. (especially if you're a fan of those kind of murders). If you're a fan of slice of life, Supernatural and tomfoolery, then this is perfect. I'm a huge fan of the Mangaka of the Manga, so I just had to check it.
Afterall Shin Kibayashi is the Pioneer of the mystery genre, and even before reading it, I knew that it will give me that Kindaichi feels..
Quick-witted banter, intriguing locked room mysteries, ironclad alibis and a somewhat steady stream of awkward jokes make Gifted, a very enjoyable.. humor aside ,
...
this series does a great job of balancing fairly low-brow humor against thought-provoking mysteries.
Shiki is more the “straight man” in the series. He sees the big shadow shape representing guilt among the suspects in the mysteries and is usually the one to point out whodunit . Even so, he can’t help but get wrapped up in the awkward hi-jinks that occur all around him thanks to the detective Natsuki.. .
Detective Natsuki who is eccentric and handsome mad scientist like character , is one of the oddest characters I’ve seen in a manga.. He takes himself seriously, but then again he doesn’t at all. He has confidence, and yet, maybe not. It’s hard to pin point who he is as a person, because if nothing else, he is consistent in his inconsistencies. Is he a genius or is he an idiot? But he is the one to figure out the tricks of howdunit and prove that Shiki-kun is correct..
As far as detective mysteries go the story arcs are based on individual cases. However, what makes this manga distinct is the fact it circles around a ninjutsu art, often mistaken as supernatural ability.. . The murderer mysteries howdunit parts were intriguing and well thought out and entertaining; however, whodunit parts were predictable thanks to ability of Shiki - kun.
