A beautiful blend of medieval dark fantasy, conniving politics, psychological thriller, and teary jerking character drama with a little bit of comedy to help ease the emotional turmoil that this series will put you through.
This is a series that seems like a lighthearted misunderstandings comedy with a common set up, but don't worry, it is not what you might expect it to be. The series follow Deon Hart, the 0th Corps Commander of the Demon King's army, revered and respected for his strength and combat prowess despite being the only human within the demon commanders...except he got that position from luck. He's actually
...
the weakest human who simply was in the right place at the right time and now must find a way to escape the demon realm without causing suspicion.
This is how the story begins, but soon it unravels into a much deeper, more engaging mystery centered around Deon: his past, his real position, his motivations, his personal ties. What unfolds is a large-scale political power struggle between two ruthless tyrants, a tragic and gripping family history, a character who fools himself into thinking that he is fine despite being broken.
Story 9/10 -
the way the story is told is absolutely incredible. The information we are fed throughout the story comes in bits and pieces, each new revelation changes the reader's perspective entirely. Each flashback and action adds more intrigue and suspense as the story continues and twists and turns make the plot engaging throughout. One thing I will say is that world building is simple: you've seen it before, demon king, kingdoms, magic, fantasy races, etc. This story uses this relatively common world set up to go full throttle into its mystery, plot, and characters.
Characters 10/10 -
Deon Hardt is one of the most fascinating main characters I've ever seen. In just 75 chapters, the writer lays a bedrock of depth and complexity that only grows as more and more is revealed about him. To put it simply- he is a mess, but a beautiful one to watch. The cast has several stand outs besides Deon that are worth mentioning. Cruel - a newly recruited hero of the empire whose interactions with the mc make for some of the most intriguing character work in the series. Eduardo - the ruler of the Empire and also a man hardened and suffocated by his seat on the throne. And Carver, the charismatic demon king who is both cocky, but viciously intelligent. These characters do not feel comically dumb and their actions seem genuinely accurate to their characters instead of actions simply taken to progress the plot. They feel well rounded and multi faceted, like really people going through real issues
Art 10/10 -
The art is vibrant and clean. Panels melt off the page and the facial expressions are quite striking. The paneling is also very well done and does well conveying emotion.
Enjoyment 10/10 -
I was hooked from the beginning, but I didn't realize how much I absolutely adored this story until I was a crying mess by the end of it. Season 1 blew me out of the water and I have no doubt season 2 will do just the same. Please give this read a try!
