Both the manga include a main character that is underestimated and look down upon, but later showing there skills and surprising everyone, also developing friendship and trust The main characters have different skills and abilities in basketball. 

Both manga are about boys trying to make it in high school basketball, but they have different motivations and progress differently. 

Although the sport is different, one is about basketball and one is about soccer, they have similar themes of never give up. Both have an eternally optimistic main character who inspires their teams to greater feats. 

both deal with two talented basketball players with a disadvantage who go through many trials to defeat a school that they previously wanted to join. 

Eventhough the type of sport is not the same (Akatsuki=Basketball and Area no Kishi=Soccer), both are still about sports. In both you can see that main characters are excellent players but they lack ability at something (Akatsuki=Scoring and Kakeru=Shooting with the left). They were also reject by the school's club. But, later joined them.  

In both series, the main protagonist becomes interested in a sport but starts off as an underdog. They work their way up and faces against skilled teams as they try to prove themselves. There's also similarity between the main protagonists especially in their personalities. 

They are both about Basketball^^ 

basketball, and also Hiiragi is a bit similar to kyou-chan... both with looks and attitude.  

They're about different sports, but a good chunk of the plot of both series is the competition between two teams at the same school -- the jerkwad coach's handpicked crew of golden boys, and our neglected, ignored, ragtag bunch of hardworking heroes. 

Both series are about a ragtag underdog team held together by a player who makes up for a short stature with speed and skill and leads the way with unbeatable optimism and cheerfulness. 

Both are about a main character who pursues their dreams and have faith in their own abilities.
