Side Characters Deserve Love Too is a ton of fun. It’s over the top, knows it and completely revels in it.
This manhwa follows Geumja Kim, a typical Korean girl who gets reincarnated into the world of this Otome manhwa she was reading. The big difference is that Geumja is a massive simp for a side character who has a tragic death in the manhwa. Like holy shit she’s really dirty minded and loves everything, EVERYTHING about this side character named Kyle du Vilteon.
When reincarnated into the novel she immediately meets with Kyle who thinks she is a spy. This is quickly cleared up
...
because Kyle can hear hear thoughts, not all her thoughts just the dirty thoughts she is having about him (which are roughly half her thoughts hahaha). She wants to stay as close to Kyle as possible (and hopefully prevent his death) and thus changes her name to Jo (partly because Kyle can’t pronounce her actual name) and pretends to be a boy so she can work in the stable. From there on it is a romantic comedy with her working to prevent his death while he is hearing all the lewd things she is thinking about him.
The comedy here is really fun, Kyle essentially falling for this absolutely lewd simping monster and coming to terms with it (especially since everyone but him and his knight think that she’s a man). This is also the only manhwa where I can say I enjoy the misunderstandings. I typically hate misunderstandings in these but the setup that these misunderstandings go through and the joke that they build up are well worth in it this one. I won’t spoil it here but there is one misunderstanding in particular that builds and builds until it gets to a breaking point where everyone is embarrassed as they try to justify the information all of them have (all misunderstandings being caused by Jo of course).
I also really like the direction the manhwa has gone. I didn’t really know where it was going to go and I’m happy with both the direction the comedy and story has gone. It’s been exploring new territories lately and developing all the characters in interesting ways. All of the characters at this point in the story have grown form the beginning of the story. And for a primarily comedy driven Otome Isekai this is surprising.
Overall Side Characters Deserve Love Too is a fun and wacky Otome Isekai with incredibly memorable characters and a surprisingly engaging plot. Plus you get the bonus of discovering all new ways of being an absolute simp (because Jo is no ordinary simp. She’s on another level).
