Blood, gore, monsters being torn to shreds. The main character is gifted the power to transform and boost their physical abilities. They fight against monsters hidden among the general population. These old manga hold nothing back during fight scenes.

In his signature gritty art style, Go Nagai depicts a journey through hell as described in Dante Alighieri’s ‘The Divine Comedy’. Various biblical deities and phenomena are shown as the protagonist is led through the circles of hell and is forced to observe divine punishments being carried out on mortal humans by devils. Not for the faint of heart, as they contain large amounts of nudity and graphic violence.

Both of these stories contain demon battles and events centered on Devilman.

Both series are by Go Nagai which explores the evil in humanity with humans transforming into demons. Mao Dante is required to be read as Devilman Lady's plot interacts with the Mao Dante story line.

Both series involve women learning to control their murderous blood-lust as they execute monsters for the greater good. Claymore focuses more on action while Devilman Lady contains psychological horror.

These stories feature anti-heroes who can potentially be as evil as the demons they hunt. Morality is made ambiguous as the distinction between good and evil is constantly shifting.

You might think that I'm only recommending the two because they're both filled with gore and nudity, and they both take place in crapsack worlds. However, there's more to these two stories than death and prevalence of evil. The two stories deal with the concept of humanity becoming powerless with similar devices such as humans "ascending" to demons and struggling against a higher power(s). They both also include a similar twist in the middle, though it's better executed and more necessary in Berserk. If you like battles against higher powers (causality in Berserk, reality in Devilman Lady), dim views of humanity/religion,  read more
