You know "that moment" that takes a manga from good to great, right? "I want to live" from One Piece, "Thank you, Gyro" in Steel Ball Run, the rollercoaster finale of Chainsaw Man. Good stories are defined by those moments that gather up all the investment that we've developed to this point, and uses it for that one moment that sticks in your heart forever. Earthchild is a seeming attempt to mass-produce those, and it kinda, uh...
Blows ass.
Earthchild has a dynamite first chapter that a lot of people mistook for a one-shot, and understandably so. It took a whirlwind romance to an unexpected but cathartic

When your story's first chapter feels so good and complete that many people, myself included, mistake it for a oneshot, you know something isn't quite right.
It's not that Earthchild is bad. That's not quite true. Earthchild has love and heart in it. But the plot feels rushed to the point that each chapter could be its own massive story arc or even manga series of its own. Contrived and convenient excuses allow for breakneck development that honestly should not happen that fast. Overall, the story can't breathe, and it feels like an awkward mishmash of different tropes or storylines that the author wanted to write, ... Apr 3, 2022
I'll admit, it feels a little harsh giving such a young series a 3, but it's true to my feelings and at this rate I don't see the series lasting that long.
Earthchild is a new (at the time of writing) manga publishing in Shonen Jump. Before the series was released I remember there being quite a bit of intrigue surrounding its announcement. Nobody had any clue what it'd be about; the previews didn't give much info, and the promotional illustration was just some guy hugging the Earth. Once the first chapter dropped my first reaction was "A superhero series? Feels a little late to the ... Mar 20, 2023
This series is bad.
Honestly it’s so bad that it falls into Neil Breen, Ed Wood, Samurai Cop, BotW territory for me where I enjoy how stupid, poorly paced, and badly written it is. Going along with the weekly Reddit threads where everyone was clowning on the series was genuinely fun. That being said, I do feel sorry for the mangaka. It seems like he genuinely did have some good ideas, but he had the misfortune of being paired up with one of the worst SJ editors in recent history. When the series switched editors towards the end, there was a noticeable increase in quality (I still ... Apr 27, 2022
This manga may be a bit rushed in the first chapters but you could say it was the most efficient way of "doing" the story. You could even say that the author wanted to make a SoL Family-life like manga but with twists. This showed how powerful a Husband's and a Father's love is, to endure, to love, to live, and to care, This is a man's role and it showed it in the most perfect yet cringy way possible 🤣 but I still like it nonetheless. Some may hate and some may love, but I hope that you would at least try to *understand*

Most of the reviews on this series are way too critical. This series is short, cheesy, romance goodness (Like power of love type). A common complaint about one-shots is that it doesn't leave a complete story. This is a one-shot if they finally decided to finish the story and it's definitely not as bad as people make it out to be. If you like Disney stories this is right up your alley. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece and at times it is predictable but that's just how it is with these genres.

I read the first chapter of this series when it first came out on Viz. As soon as it dropped, I was ready to read it and get a feel for a fresh new series. However, what I got was mixed feelings on top of fixed feelings...
To say the first chapter felt incredibly rushed is an understantement. It is rushed as hell. So much so people thought it was a one shot. And to be honest, I think the series would've been a better one shot than the mess it turned into. Read the first chapter for an okay oneshot experience, a 6, maybe 7/10. ... Jun 23, 2023
This manga had an explosive first chapter that, while fast paced, delivered a fantastic story and topped it off with a brilliant ending. Only, it didn't actually end, because despite what I'd thought, it was not a one-shot.
Each and every following chapter felt like it was dogging on the steps of the very first or trying to go bigger and better and out-do it. But it continued to fall flat time and time again. At this point I'm not even sure why this continued for as long as it did because, to be blunt, the story sucked. The only way I'd recommend this is to read ... |
