Main character has a bad home life and a strained relationship with their mother. A main male character is obsessed with the female male character, to the point that he'd do anything for her. Both involve an animal looking creature (Punpun- bird, Takopii- octopus) and both have their brief comedic moments every now and then, especially at the beginning of the manga before things get dark. Shizuka's dad is also not present in the manga.

You could say that Takopi's Original Sin is a deconstruction of Doraemon. Cute mascot-like character helps a child through outlandish sci-fi tools. Just this time, they get hit by the harsh reality of consequences.

Everyone is miserable, there are no good parents, you will cringe at what the characters have to go through, but you won't be able to stop reading either. Morbidly enthralling manga with fantastic art.

While Takopii is edgier, they both have too many similarities to ignore it, and take a very... interesting... approach. If you liked one of them, you'll probably like the other.

Both manga feature an abused/tormented child as a primary character, and both have a similar comedic/dramatic duality to them, in the way they approach their premise. (i.e. touching the boundary of being edgy)

Both have a strong focus on how their main characters handle abuse.

The two have very similar premises and set-ups even though they are tonally and thematically very different. They are about cute, blobby creatures who want to spread happiness, particularly to the unhappy girl/woman who cares for them. I will say that Takopi is significantly darker and more disturbing than Kurumi, as it deals with very dark topics, as it focuses on depression and the dark side of humanity. Yumi to Kurumi is more lighthearted and focuses on insecurities and finding confidence in yourself. It's very cute and has a romantic plot as well. They're very different takes on a similar premise. Both by the same author. Frankly, both are pretty depressing, so if you like Takopii, you might like Ichinose.

Really interesting combination of heavy themes with a silly tone that work surprisingly well to deliver a compelling story

If you're interested in manga that explores themes of time travel and child abuse, while delving into the darker aspects of human nature, I would recommend "Takopii no Ganzai." This manga is known for its shockingly raw and cruel nature, despite being narrated through innocent eyes, which makes the story devastatingly brutal. On the other hand, if you prefer a plot that focuses on posing and developing mysteries, I suggest "Boku dake ga Inai Machi." This manga places more emphasis on building and unraveling mysteries within the storyline.

- Sad and lonely protagonist suffering from abuse - Depressive story with melancholy ambiance - MC is accompanied with an animal (dog/octopus alien)

Both of these are reimaginations of Doreamon plotline for adult audiences. Just in one case more direct and in the other one more loose.

It's similar in certain aspects and themes but seinen, longer, more grounded on reality and better executed(in my opinion). It has children dying, dysfunctional families and people fucking up their lifes.
