First of all, I am a big fan of Bloom into You/YagaKimi, so once I realized it was the same author, I was sold.
Every day, the world is affected by "bugs" that change one random thing for a set amount of time (depending of their strength). Kon, is a middle schooler with a mysterious background. He lives in a shared home whose landlord, Himesaki, isn't affected by bugs, so she studies them and how they affect people. Kon deals with the his past and how it affects himself and his relationships with the help of Hime and his friends.
It is very episodical, but there
...
is a plot strung throughout. The bugs are creative and fun (striped water flea 🫶), and push the story along when they need to. There are some are more gimmicky/gag chapters, but it fits the story and doesn't take away from it. For the more complicated bugs, Hime explains them nicely so that a middle schooler can understand, literally. This is a very good coming of age story, as mentioned in my synopsis. The characters have fun chemistry, and the main pair have an interesting dynamic that evolves with them. Each of the side characters get a chapter, or most of a chapter, dedicated to them, so they are not just set dressing. There is a fair bit of fluff/cutesy interaction between Kon and his classmates or roommates.
Nakatani's art hasn't changed much since YagaKimi, but it fits the story very well. The characters feel bouncy and energetic, and all have their own styles. The background art is absolutely beautiful. The perspective is amazing and there is no shortage of details, even within the first chapter alone. The panel work is dynamic and flows well. It shows off the characters and there is even a bug that makes speech bubbles real, like ballons. Also, I highly recommend getting the physical volumes if you can, as there are extra 4koma and little illustrations, not to mention the covers are beautiful with little references to the bugs that happen in them.
Overall, I love this manga a lot! It's very good, a relatively short read with only 22 chapters. The characters are loveable and get established quickly.
