when i first started reading this manga, shaman king came to my head, since they bith have to do with competitions with their group. 

Kurou(Flags) is very similar to Ginta(MÄR),in many aspects.They both entered a fighting championship to save(MÄR-Heaven[Ginta])or Toutou(Kurou).They both are given a weapon with 8 powers.Fing is too a more friendly version of Phantom.Their father was in battle before too. 

Both have gained a sword with many powers(8-Flags/10-Rave),fight an empire trying to take over the whole world.The main character come from a small island,and don't know the rest of the world.Both fathers fought against the empire too. 

Both stories are about a young man who lives on a island and sets out to follow in his fathers footsteps to become the greatest Hunter/Patriot in the world. Along the way they meet new allies as well as new enemies.
