Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Ai Hoshino is a talented and beautiful idol who is adored by her fans. She is the personification of a pure, young maiden. But all that glitters is not gold.

Gorou Amemiya is a countryside gynecologist and a big fan of Ai. So when the pregnant idol shows up at his hospital, he is beyond bewildered. Gorou promises her a safe delivery. Little does he know, an encounter with a mysterious figure would result in his untimely death—or so he thought.

Opening his eyes in the lap of his beloved idol, Gorou finds that he has been reborn as Aquamarine Hoshino—Ai's newborn son! With his world turned upside down, Gorou soon learns that the world of showbiz is paved with thorns, where talent does not always beget success. Will he manage to protect Ai's smile that he loves so much with the help of an eccentric and unexpected ally?

Background

"Oshi no Ko" ranked 11th and seventh in the 2021 and 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division, respectively. The manga was nominated for the 14th and 15th Manga Taisho Awards and placed fifth and eighth in the final ranking, respectively. It was also nominated for the 46th and 48th Kodansha Manga Awards in the General category.

The series has been published digitally in English through MANGA Plus. The volumes have been published by Yen Press since January 17, 2023. It has also been released in French by Kurokawa since January 13, 2022; and in Polish by Studio JG since October 21, 2022.

Started reading this today after reading Love is War, another one of his works. To start off, I honestly got mislead by the cover art and thought is was just going down the Shounen/Shoujo path; boy was I wrong... This story definitely has what I look for in most Manga.

1) Catches my attention
2) Leaves me on the edge of my seat
3) Has some sort emotional rollercoaster/a sense of realism
Lastly,
4) A clear story with a goal in mind (this isn't a must, but it definitely helps with most things I read)

Long story short; I definitely recommend reading this, it wont disappoint.

This is conflicting…the “main” storyline that was set up at chapter 1 was absolutely amazing, and had the potential to be one of the first 10/10 stories I give. And then… it got abandoned for the rest of the entire manga, with a sprinkle of dick tease here and there just to rub it in your face.

The majority of the story about the idol industry is honestly boring as hell, and if it weren’t for the first few chapters of brilliant setup, I would have dropped it in a flash. That said, I did speedread most of the chapters due to how uninteresting it ...

After reading Oshi no Ko, I was left feeling unimpressed. The storyline lacked coherence and felt disjointed, with the plot meandering without any clear direction. Additionally, the characters were one-dimensional and lacked depth, making it difficult to become invested in their arcs.

The artwork was serviceable but unremarkable. The character designs were uninspired and lacked originality, and the backgrounds were often plain and uninteresting. Furthermore, the pacing of the story was uneven, with some scenes dragging on for too long while others felt rushed and underdeveloped.

Overall, I would not recommend Oshi no Ko to anyone looking for a manga with a compelling story and engaging characters. ...
