Imagine a story of war written by.... Zerg. Or Tyranids. Or xenomorph. That's the core idea of this book. Sounds good, right?


Unfortunately, the book is fairly weakly written. It is a "light noveL', so it is very light reading, and if you used to read normal literature it doesn't compare to, say "Call me Joe" by Paul Anderson, not to mention heavy artillery like "Dragon's Egg", etc. If we're talking about actual light novel, then the quality is worse than that of Ovelord "Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken" or chinese novels like Lord of Mysteries or Legendary Mechanic.

Her majesty's swarm suffers from multitude of problems ... in writing.

World building is very basic, there is barely any details present. Some things like currency are mentioned in one line, there's not enough meat in the text to make reader imagine details of the world.

Characters are one dimensional. They're barely fleshed out and are very frequently swiftly killed which is often very awkwardly foreshadowed. On occasion the author produces someone that is going to die horribly, but that lacks impact as there's barely an chance to get attached to them. Villains are of the "insane evil" type, and non-villains often act irrationally, for example, by easily agreeing to something, or easily believing someone.

Protagonist has severe problems with motivation and reasoning and acts in irrational way. The story tries to explain it, but it doesn't go well.

Lastly catastrophes and deaths are not handled well, and do not have as much impact as they would have.

So it reads almost like a transcript of an RTS match without any significant major revelations or great plot devices, it just goes on and that's it. You can't marvel reading about the world, characters, enemies, because there isn't enough detail. So the whole thing is pretty much drawn in very broad strokes and almost nothing is fleshed out. Which makes it uninteresting to read.

It is a pity, as the core idea is magnificient and has a lot of potential. It is just apparently the writer's skills are not sufficient to implement it properly.

I've read 3 volumes of this thing, and while it improves slightly at volume 3, it is still fairly bland.

3/10 story, 5/10 art, 3/10 character, 4/10 enjoyment, 3/10 overall.

Not recommended. I checked it out to see what happens after events of the manga adaptation, but if I skipped this one, I wouldn't have lost much.
