In all seriousness, it truly is a shame that this series received the axe. Perhaps because of there being no truck-kun, axe-kun decided to step in, and so this series has ended prematurely; bad jokes aside, the reason for the axing was low sales. Thankfully the author, rather than rushing the ending (which in all honestly they could have gotten away with considering what was going on during the last couple arcs), chose to finish the arc as they had originally intended. So while ... readers of this series won't get a true ending, there is at least some closure for the series, and the series is left in a position where the creator can easily enough continue. So, knowing that this is an axed series, is it still worth reading? While not a must, it isn't a bad way to spend a couple hours and flesh out your manga list.

Story: 7
The story is different enough from the typical hero fantasy series out there nowadays. The hero isn't transported in from another world or reincarnated, no revenge/betrayal/edginess. The series isn't aiming to be an epic or have battles lasting dozens of chapters. The hero party has some clear goals, and while attempting to fulfill those goals, they end up occasionally helping others in need. Arcs aren't drawn out, but are delivered in small servings. It's simple, yet because of its simplicity, it's refreshing in a way. There are definitely hints of things that were to come (but didn't beat the axing) that would have added more depth to the story, but unfortunately the execution of those foreshadowed events can't be judged.

The art is nothing spectacular, but does the job and suits this series well.

The characters are like the story, very simple, and therefore predictable in their actions. Depending on the type of character interactions you enjoy, you'll either find certain characters annoying or endearing. I personally found a few of the characters annoying, but was interested enough in the story to look past that. The characters are at least pretty consistent with their types, and there is character growth.

If some of the characters were slightly different I probably would have enjoyed the series more. The creator often tries to be humorous (mainly silly humor), and while sometimes it did well, sometimes it fell flat. Overall, I was looking forward to seeing the story progress and am disappointed the series received the axe. Had the story been further along, it may have scored higher.

tl;dr: A manga that has some good potential in terms of the world building and main relationship, but that suffers from not being to decide whether it wants to be a harem manga or not and from being axed before getting anywhere near the ending.

The hero, Shibuki, and his party defeat the Demon King, but Shibuki doesn’t survive the battle. He is given a massive funeral befitting that of the savior of the kingdom where all lament his passing. But then Shibuki suddenly breaks out of his coffin. It’s a miracle! Nope. It’s a curse. It seems the Demon King cursed Shibuki with undeath, a ... curse that is only lifted upon the death of the caster, thus implying that Demon King yet lives. To make matters worse, this means that Shibuki is unable to get close to his newly betrothed fiancé, Surfi, because as the High Saint just her touch damages the undead. Thus, Shibuki sets out once more to defeat the Demon King and save the world, and his love life.

The hero being undead results in him getting along better with demons and seeing them as people instead of just evil monsters, thus resulting in him and Surfi questioning the teachings of the church. This isn’t all that rare of a premise for manga these days, which shouldn’t be all that surprising as it’s basically just combining the standard RPG tropes that manga/LN love to use combined with the defeating god trope that JRPGs love to use. Still, this manga was doing a pretty good job at execution of the premise. The manga is mainly comedic, especially early on, with pretty solid comedy. However, there was also a lot of slow but steady world building hinting at complications that seemed really interesting. Unfortunately, the manga got axed and the ending didn’t even try to solve all the mysteries or resolve all the plot threads that had been brought up. Thus, the ending is completely unsatisfying.

Character wise it’s just as much of if not more of a mess. Shibuki sets off initially with Surfi and Lyco, a sorceress. Not long after the party is joined by Vanilla, a succubus. So it’s a group of three girls being led by one guy. On top of that, one of them is the guy’s fiancé, the second is implied to have had a crush on him, and the third just wants his babies. Throw in that the princess of the kingdom and the queen of the elves also seem to love him, and it feels a lot like a harem. But at the same time, it seems to be trying to not actually be that. Shibuki isn’t going to cheat on his fiancé so there’s nothing going on with anyone else. And in the last volume, it suddenly makes Lyco the protagonist with a focus on her romance with someone else. I have no clue what it was trying to do as in the end I feel trying to go both ways just made it unappealing to both those that like and dislike harems.

The relationship between Shibuki and Surfi at least came out pretty well. Their relationship has two major things standing in their way. The first obviously being that she can’t touch him. But the second being that as the high saint, Surfi is super prudish. It’s pretty standard for RPG parties to have a saint or priest, but it’s pretty rare to have ones that are shown to genuinely practice their religion and try to spread it. To be clear, while she is preachy, she’s really pure hearted so it doesn’t come across as annoying. The manga makes sure to very explicitly contrast her with the more malicious members of the church. Surfi’s innocence and how Shibuki reacts to and deals with it is hilarious. And how she’s slowly taking steps to overcome it, in line with her coming to question the teachings of the church more, is a surprisingly good character arc. Though unfortunately, the manga ends before her character arc and the two’s relationship arc reaches any sort of conclusion. Lyco also got somewhat of a character arc, but it was pretty bad. There are a couple other characters that have hints of character arcs, but nothing substantial enough to matter.

The art and designs are pretty good. However, they are pretty generic and not particularly memorable.
