The manga is about a girl who got abused and wants her brother back. From the start the manga made me feel sad and made me feel like I was in the situations. The characters have development relatively quickly and the ending is satisfying. The art is decent it's good but nothing too amazing. Some of the chapters art were messed up but It wasn't that big of a deal as I could clearly see what was supposed top be depicted. Overall I recommend reading this to anyone and I thoroughly enjoyed this manga since chapter 1. I would rate this ... manga a 9/10

A sweet, saccharine story of a young girl (Kanami) trying to connect to her brother. After her parents died, her brother broke down, tried to sever all ties with her, and isolated himself from the world. She then meets a man (Makoto) who resembles her brother, and he wants to fill the gap left in her heart of her real brother. In order for Kanami to ensure she doesn't replace her brother with Makoto, she insists on renting him out as a big brother.

The two go through heartwarming days as fake brother-and-sister, going to arcades, restaurants, shopping and more. Due to Kanami's fear of adults, ... Makoto introduces her to his friends, who all take a liking to her. Slowly Kanami grows out of her shell, but her brother continues to lash out at any attempts to connect with him. The emotional climx, when Kanami gets hurt trying to protect her brother from falling boxes, leads them to rekindling their relationship while keeping her "rental" brother and his friends close in her life.

The story is a refreshing slice of life story of a young girl trying to wade through the cruelness of life: it's not deep, but cute and brings a small smile to your face. The character development for everyone besides Kanami is rather weak, and the story feels unrealistic, but it's endearing and overall enjoyable. The art, and not only the writing, is endearing, sweet, and sentimental. Kanami is the perfect younger sister (adorable, sweet, and empathetic), and Makoto is the ideal older brother (handsome, protective, involved, empathetic, understanding, and caring), and the art reflects these facets of their personality.

Ultimately, Rental Onii-Chan is like ice cream: sweet and refreshing, but temporal and not that deep. If you want any realistic portrayals of trauma, abuse, neglect, and forgiveness: Rental Onii-Chan has none of it. If you want an idealized version of these themes that could only exist in fiction for a happy ending, then this is for you.

You see, this manga is psychological. It has this tag for reasons. From the moment I read the manga, I already know this is psychological (You can see the proper tag in mangaupdates) even without looking and I know many people who is not used to see this will hate it. Some psychological manga doesn't really have moral dilemma like Banana Fish, but some of them really have moral dilemma and some people can't really understand why this character act this way. Human is complex, unique. Even if we have the same problem, reaction toward that problem maybe different so it's hard to understand. What ... we call normal maybe for other people is not, vice versa. That's why if you can't read psychological manga or prejudice toward something different with you, or doesn't even bother to think why this character act this way and label it as lack of common sense, don't read this.

For example, someone here said that why a kind person can become abusive, even if he care so much for his sister and want his sister to not know his parents are abusive.
You need to see this manga from the whole perspective:
He receive bullying, he need to endure his parents abuse, now he need to endure his relatives too. This is the reason why you shouldn't keep problem to yourself, because if you can't bear it anymore, you can explode. That's what happen to him, it ever happen to someone close to me too. He can't even see that there is someone care for him. That's why in the end of story, he said he will seek professional help.

And someone also said that they just forgive him like that, honestly, do you know how many times the kid want to abandon her brother because she can't bear it anymore. But she remember he used to be kind and he is the only family she had, so she always try again and again. His brother was also scolded in the end of story, they don't believe him. You see, when you have mental problem, I don't think the best way is to just hate them and leave them alone, but you need to lead them to seek professional help. That what the brother said he will do.

This kid here is so mature because she has been through a lot. That happen when you experience horrible things since a child. I was also like that when I was a child. You need to be mature earlier to be able to survive that environment

I don't think this is unrealistic since I can relate a lot. The plot with rent Oniichan, you see when you can't find anyone near you who you can tell your problem, you will search anywhere else. That's why people who have problem in their house find a place for them outside, even in stranger. It happens.

I hope people who think this is unrealistic just because you never experience it will search more information about life of other people. Just because you never experience it and never see it, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Art: The art is really good and it convey their emotion really well.

Okay, so this is a bit too phenomenal of a work to be just decided as a good read. Different feelings were surging inside of me when reading this chef'douevre of a work. The feeling of sympathy, exasperation and the feeling most wanted " To protect".
It would not be an exaggeration to say that the drama that author touched in this manga, is by no means is not a fragile one. Splendid work when handeling such a delicate yet need to be addressed topic.

About the story, I would say it goes pretty well, with each chapter bringing development and the FMC dire and dramatic ... situation setting the modus-operandi of the plot of the manga. The MC is also a good individual with distinct qualities of commendable traits which he proves by in the manga chapters by how he behaves and takes care of the cute, sweet and innocent girl. Which really won our hearts.

The epilogue was also beautiful yet logical one which closes the door of more curiousity and finally settles the long-awaited DRAMA, which is rare because many few 'short' mangas has done this over the course of time.

Since its the Author's first manga I'd say its quite okay.

I cried in the last volume, so overall I gave it a 6/10.

Story 5/10
The plot was pretty so-so, it doesn't really stand out. I also feel like there were so many scenes that came out underdeveloped. To say the least, it felt unnatural. However, its not really that bad. I actually quite like the essence of the story. I just feel like it could have been executed more delicately and not rushed.

Art 7/10
Did you see Kanami's hair? Its so damn pretty. I really love how her hair flows. I like the dynamic of the art ... and it looks so warm and peaceful. Love the art style.

Character 6/10
The characters are not too plenty so they aren't forgettable. However, most of the extra characters look like they just got inserted just to satisfy the plot. They say some good things though, too bad they didn't get so much exposure to at least learn about their nature. Feels out of place.

Enjoyment 6/10
This is mostly due to the long wait for every chapter. However, I still acutely enjoyed the story and still came back for every update.

To summarize, there are some underdeveloped scenes which didn't feel natural so I gave it a 6/10, but its definitely not bad.
If you want to read a short and light manga just to pass the time then this is a good enough read.
Its not very deep but you get the gist of it in real life. So-so execution.

Avoid this manga at all cause if tour are looking for a realistic portrayal of abuse and forgiveness.

I wasnt planning of writing a review yet the only one here is a possitive one, Who can lead to people to read this non sense.

This manga is the worse attempt of disfuntional family dinamincs ever wrote , is full of plot holes even the time jumps doesnt make sense, everything here is wrote in a way that is obviously to attempt to make you cry, thats the whole point, cheap drama to make you cry, even if the actions of all the cast ... lack of meaning or reasons.... Who Cares right? Lets cry for the abused kid being hit by his horrible brother yet console by a total strangers she found in a park.

Characters 2/10
Besides cute nice selfless onii Chan and cute so cute mature kid all the rest of the cast didnt really need to existe , and the brother is just there to be hated on ... His actions make no SENSE at all, why hiting your little sister that obviously want yo conect with you???? When you clearly Care for her SO MUCH that you wanted to avoid to find out that the parents were abusive..... Why then the sudden change from caring to beating and destroying personal stuffs like her diary ????

WAS OVER THE TOP , the manga could make him just depressive in a room with cero talking and have same impact , cuz she would be still neglective, but NO, HE HAD TO BE A BEATER TOO ... And then expect him.to.forget him.ciz he was being bullyed ... Ohhhh so cute , nah the magical forgiveness came out of the blue and with a time jump. Cheap drama comes with fast forgiveness right ???

The kid act like an adult, so mature, so ready to Risk her all for her older brother ... Why on earth THE KID has to do the emotional work to Fix a relationship ? Why ???? Is so twisted , is how abusive people manipulate their targets, gashligt them into making them think is their fault they act like that cuz they didnt put ENOUGHT EFFORT into changing the abuser.

This manga make me.sick NOT EMOTIONAL, i was in rage for most of It , why not a single adult make visitations? Why not a single teacher Care for that kid ??? She had to be a saint even on HER OWN BULLYING scenario, ready for forgive ... Who wrote this ??? Why is expected for woman to Fix Broken men ???

Disgusting , the only reason i give this a 2 and not a 1 is cuz art was beautiful, and first 3 chapters were promesing so I'm being nice and
