This anime exceed my expectation, I originally watch this because it's boring so I can grinding game while watch this so I can understand why the rating is low. But this anime is stay true to the title from beginning till the end. I expect the ending to be like that if it will stay true to the title and my prediction turn out to be true.
Review about story:
Gunjou no Fanfare or Fanfare of Adolescence is really how to describe this anime. This anime is talking about their struggle as jockey-wanna-be until they become real jockey in last episode. Along the way of
...
their journey, they choose their own path. That's why this anime more focus on their road to be jockey, their training, and people involved in this industry so they can learn and develop to be jockey or find their new purpose. This is not anime about them have race again and again like in some other sport anime so don't expect it to be like that when you watch this. This title also explain why there is time skip in this anime, it's because this is talking about their growth, we are expected to see their most crucial development (In this case when they enter the high school and time skip one year to when they are assigned to training center, skip again to when there is mock exam, skip again after graduation).
Unlike some people here who love anime with competition every episode, I enjoy more on relationship between people involved in sport anime so this type of anime is perfect for me. This anime more focused on 2 characters, Yuu and Shun as maybe you expect from first episode but they also show us a bit about other characters and their struggle.
Characters:
I think characters in this anime is not shallow but also not complicated too. . This is what often happen in anime sport that only 12-13 episode, they need talk about some characters in short amount of time so the characters won't be too complicated or they focus on one character but it will be in depth. This anime is the first option. We see what's on their mind, their problem and we even know a bit of their past but it's still not enough for me to be able to say they make a deep characters. But at least this anime really stay true to the title and show us their development.
Sound: Okay, the sound is sawano hiroyuki so it's good. It really make the characters shine more with his OST. The opening is catchy like Korean boyband song and the enidng song also sound good.
I think the weakness of this anime is that it's not clear. It's kinda hard to follow sometimes for someone who don't know anything about horse race. Other example is the information given to us is not clear, sometimes only implied for example the power of Shun. Like wtf is that and how you can give it to someone like XD

***THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS***
As manga reader who also read this author other manga, I know there will be many misunderstanding lol. This mangaka sometimes make elementary and junior high school characters and it's including the childish part of kid (The part people consider unlikeable) to the point people frustrated with it.
First of all,
"Is this incest?"
NO. I only read till chapter 52, but other manga reader who read till volume 22 already said it's not the case at least till that volume and I don't think the anime will reach volume 22 so don't worry.
Story:
This is story about a junior high school student who love
...
ballet but because of his past (People's opinion, what his father said, what his uncle said and "incident"), he think that doing ballet is not masculine so this story will be talking about that. Other than that, there will be problem like abuse and bullying too and how MC struggle in ballet. This story will mainly about his development and other characters who meet him.
Characters:
So what I love the most about this author is the characters and atmosphere (tbh I don't know if MAPPA can make the same atmosphere, I can only hope). Many people consider the MC as annoying but if you consider all aspect of him (age, past, mindset, personality), it's just how I expect him to act, it make sense. Some author make character too mature or too good to be true or just bland character but he is just your usual junior high school kid who is childish, indecisive, want to look "cool".
Other character that I found interesting is Luou. You know from first episode there is something wrong with him, especially in episode 3 when you see how he can't fit in. Considering his past, his portrayal is really good in my opinion (Yeah his past is not only about his mother, there is other problem).
Since there are a lot of characters in this anime, I will only mention this 2 for now since I think they are the one given depth much more than other characters till this point in anime.
I think the relationship is also make sense. Junior high school boy who has crush on girl just because she is pretty and decide to do something to impress her. Junior high school kid who bully others because he is different (This is sad but this is reality in Japan especially since Japan really care about conformity). Junior high school kid who try to fit in with his friends. Many other type of relation we will see in the future and we see now.
Some people maybe think "childish characters" "childish relationship" "childish decision making" as weakness in story, but for me as long as it's good portrayal, then it's good. You are the one who decide to watch anime with middle school characters so I hope people understand what it means. And please pay attention to all aspect of the characters mentioned in anime so you will make sense of their action.
Art:
Many people get bothered with the art especially their eyes, that half circle on their eyes is more visible in anime than manga and it can be distracting but I get used to it. And their neck actually look longer than in manga (except when he practice ballet since his posture need to be like that). I think the manga is really good with the atmosphere so I hope they can portray it in the anime. Other than that, I think the art is good enough.

Mystery to Iu Nakare is a famous manga with sales more than 15 millions as of now (Which is rare for josei manga). Unfortunately it's not yet have official translation.
This story follow Kunou Totonou who has high observation skill, critical thinking, and always speak up his mind. He also often question values, stereotype, system and things taken for granted in society. In this story, Totonou will solve many cases and if you pay attention, you will realize we actually know about him little by little from each case and you can even guess his past if you pay attention in one panel of chapter 1.
...
Totonou often criticize how Japan handle issues such as bully and abuse. he also give opinion about Japan society which is really patriachy. From the cases, we know they mostly talk about family issue and the culprit usually male. Not that I think the author is bias but I think it's related with Totonou's past that's why the author highlight it. Despite all this, the author said that Totonou is in the middle of growth period so maybe he can be wrong so she want us as reader to think before accepting what he said.
I think you can relate in some cases or you can get more information because it seems the author do proper research before making the story, for example: she interview bus company to make story about bus hijack. But still confirm it first in other source. This story also got praise from journalist specialize in parenting who often talk about bullying and abuse and this person immediately buy all the volume of manga after see Totonou's perspective of bullying and abuse.
This story focus more on "Why" instead of "How" which is really good for me since I am more interested in why they did all that and what's on their mind compared to how the case happen.
I also recommend watching the live action, Totonou played by one of the best actor in Japan, Masaki Suda. They include romance element a bit, skip some cases and not include some characters but the core of the story is the same so you can still enjoy as manga reader.
By the way, Totonou won the best leading actor in the 1st Magademy 2021, congratulation Totonou-kun!! Stay inspirational and keep speaking!!!

I am shocked to see the reviewer here. Are we really reading the same manga? I know some reviewer here only read about 3 chapters but I already notice character development since chapter 1. How can anyone think there is no character development here? Let me explain this part as objective as possible, I will even tell you the chapter you can refer to as proof.
First of all, I'm the type of person who like character development. I won't read manga that is "killing for the sake of killing" or "This character already evil since birth". But I see this manga is not like that
...
since first chapter.
This manga is not the type of manga that tell us the character is evil since birth and I know from chapter one when Will said it and Rwanda replied, "It's too late" and show some emotion there, he falter. I assume Rwanda is psychopath who since birth lack of empathy but it seems he can show emotion and as the author already mention in Rwanda's biography, I think he is more toward narcissistic personality disorder (Well, since I am not psychiatrist I can't diagnosed him but the symptoms are resemble NPD).
Rwanda said it himself "I live hidden in basement, it seems I never grew most of those feeling". And so the first thing we see is how Rwanda feel something (You can see a glimpse in chapter 1) and you can see more when Rwanda meet May. That's the type of emotion Rwanda never experience and he is scared of it so he run away by planning to kill the source of his feeling and in this case May. It will be more clear in chapter 11 and 19.
Why Rwanda kill other people? May already explain it in chapter 11. The fact that he is feeling something in the beginning, it's character development. The fact that he falter to kill May in chapter 11 and Will in chapter 1, it's character development. The fact that he is accepting his feeling in chapter 19, that's character development, little by little, naturally. So I don't know what the hell people here mean by character development. Of course he won't change to be suddenly won't kill anyone and become proper person, of course his character development will be baby step, he is been hidden in that basement his entire life. If you still don't know what is character development, you go search in google, basically it's the changes a character undergoes over the course of a story as a result of their actions and experiences. And it match this story 😂 Did he change? Yeah. The proof? A lot since chapter 1 but the most visble one is chapter 11 when he is about to cry and didn't kill May and chapter 19 when he cried and he acknowledge the feeling that he has. However small it's, it's character development, don't reduce it to "No development".
Some people here said he doesn't get any consequence. What kind of consequence? Go to prison? Tortured? Tbh I don't think Rwanda need that now. The reason is because he already experience too much bad things in his life. Until chapter 19, nothing is going right for him, even the thing he want the most, he lose it. What someone like Rwanda need is affection and kindness, if he got punishment, he will become worse, not better because he doesn't understand the significance of what he did. Can you imagine if someone suddenly told him he is a murderer and people hate him early in the story? I believe he will think something like, "So what?" But if this type of thing happen later in the story when he understand more about him, other people and experience kindness, it will affect him. If he will get punishment for killing, it will be later in story or at the end of story like Lelouch of Rebellion, Banana Fish, 91 days etc.
"The pacing is too fast"
Well, I think me and everyone else see this manga from different perspective. I see this from his character development so for me the pacing feels so natural. I see those killing as his stepping stone to understand more about himself not as "shock value". For example, in chapter 1 he kills a lot of people, it's not the matter of how many did he kill but what is the meaning of that. He kills those children because he feels something inside him is lacking. Next he kills Will and he falter a bit there. From this 2 event, we can see there is character development here for a bit. He still kill Will in the end, but the fact that he is able to falter means that he develop from previous killing which he could do without much consideration.
As you can see, this is psychological manga. As someone who read a lot of psychological manga, article about psychology, have mental illness and have many bad experience myself, I can tell this manga is on the proper side, I know at least the author doing some research on the human psychological.
Overall, I think this manga is good psychological manga that show us natural development of characters. The psychological insight also match my own experience and knowledge I have about this matter. If you like gore, you will like this.

Character:
First of all, as someone who also has self hatred since I am a child and longer than her (Because I am older than her), I will say that the way this manga portray self hatred is really realistic. Her inner thought is exactly my thought on daily basis. The way she always think in negative way even if someone say something normal, the way she is easily influenced when someone begin to say even a bit of negative thing, the way she always apologize even if she doesn't need to, it's just same as me.
Second, her character development is really natural. It's not
...
too fast not too slow. You know those characters who was given advice once then they immediately change? It doesn't happen here. Even after given many compliment, many affection by Yurie and male lead, she still has sometimes negative thought and even the male lead said something like "This is the most positive and confident statement she said" and he said "Her trauma is deeper than I thought" in chapter 12. From my experience, those negatives thought possibly won't completely disappear after years but it can slowly change to be more positive. In my case, it's not a matter of how long I meet but how much I was given affection, is it continuous or not and it seems to be the case for her too.
Since many people say female lead change ONLY because of the male lead and some men around her, I will say this. There are some people who give her confidence, it's mainly Yurie (woman) and male lead, and Kouji also support her in those dark years even if not much to improve her psychological state and condition, so it's not only male lead. Hana (woman), her maid also give her support in those dark years. Everyone who think it's only male lead or only men around her, PLEASE READ AGAIN PROPERLY). Yurie really contribute a lot in her growth, without Yurie, I don't think male lead will be able to give Miyo support because male lead know how to handle Miyo mainly because of Yurie's advice.
Miyo and male lead relationship is feels natural too, the male lead at first only interested in here= because she is unusual, then he cares about her and finally love. Miyo is also same, male lead told us that at first Miyo doesn't really care who is it as long as they provide her home but after several chapters, it changes to be, "I wanted to be here."
About backstory, we were given backstory of female lead mainly and a bit about other character like male lead, Kaya, Kouji.
Is the villain here is simply bad people who only hate her?
No and I don't know. The only villain that we already know the past is Kaya, we don't know about her mother, her father, related to why they do that to Miyo. For Kaya, she was given mindset since she was child that she is always above Miyo in everything, she is always right, this was explained by male lead so if you think she is simply bad because she is bad PLEASE READ AGAIN PROPERLY.
Story:
Story is simple about a girl who meet a man and his caretaker and how she gain confidence by interacting with them (character development) and also how the the FL and ML relationship develop. There is supernatural aspect here as part of the plot that possibly will become more major as the story progress. The story progression feel so natural, we were shown how she change and how their relationship change little by little with some inner thought as benchmark (Like what I already said about chapter 12 it's benchmark as her first confidence statement) so we can keep track of her progress.
Overall I really enjoy the story, it touch my heart and how she progress also motivate me to become more positive too.

I think it's really obvious this is not the end of story yet from what happen in last episode, so you can check the manga to know about the continuation. I thought they will adapt till next arc because it will put conclusion to Chateau past but they don't so I am pretty disappointed for that. They need 1-2 more episodes honestly. Other than that, it's not so bad adaptation. I will say this again and again that this is psychological manga but as usual MAL doesn't put the genre here. I ever put new psychological manga in MAL and they remove the psychological tag
...
so just check source like mangaupdates because it makes a huge difference if you see this as normal manga vs psychological. It's like this, in romance psychological it's normal if their romance is unusual, so people who read already prepare for it but if you think this is normal, maybe people who is not used to it will think, "wtf is going on" "Why their relationship is weird" "They don't have chemistry", so on. I will explain this more later.
Story:
The story will focus more on the character background and events surrounding them with a bit of action (It's rare for female demographic action manga to have a lot of action like shounen manga). Some people maybe found this story too slow, especially if you are used to watch anime with a lot of shit going on since episode 1 like Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen (Which I can't relate because I am used to slow paced story)
About characters:
What I like about this story is how the character is really mysterious but that's what draw me to them. And when the mystery revealed everything will make sense. (I know because I read the manga). If I may describe, it's kinda like exchange relationship, but they care about each other, there is mix of guilt, sense of salvation, etc. In other words, hard to describe. But their unusual relationship is the thing that make them interesting. But unfortunately they don't adapt next arc so not everything about Chateau revealed and Ryangha's past will be revealed more in the next next arc.
Some people said they don't have chemistry. Well, their chemistry is uncommon for sure. Again, this is psychological romance, usually their chemistry is uncommon. For example: A manipulate B to love A, in the end B is really attached with A and B think he is in love with A. Do you think they have chemistry? Not at all, their love start through manipulation but that's just how psychological romance are. Their romance usually unusual because the way they behave depend on their personality, environment, their value, circumstance, etc etc. It's not as simple as I love you, you love me because they are usually more unique and more human.
Sound:
I really like the OP and ED, OP really match the atmosphere of the anime, ending match sad past of Ryangha and Chateau (which is maybe why the ED have Ryangha and Chateau there). The OST is also match with the anime.
Enjoyment:
I really enjoy the anime, just disappointed they cut the ending there.
This is for people who often misunderstood this anime:
Is this romance anime? Yeah but this is anime adapted from manga and even the manga haven't reach the romance part. There are many manga with slow romance that need to reach so many chapters for them to finally together. Do you know Akatsuki no Yona? Do you know when Yona finally realize Hak feeling despite the genre being romance? More than 150 chapters.
Is this about a girl who fall in love with toxic man? Not really, we don't know yet. The manga is psychological, you can check mangaupdates, don't depend on MAL for genre. What usually happen in psychological romance manga? It's not rare for the relationship to be toxic or unusual to the point you don't even know if it's love or obsession or manipulation or they just need someone to cling. So maybe in the future this manga will be like that but what you need to know for sure is, this anime never try to make their relationship as if it's normal or a good romance. If people think their "chemistry" is a good romance, that's not the anime's fault, that's just depend on how each person think of something they see. Don't blame everything on the author. This anime acknowledge that Ryang-ha is dangerous person. If you don't like the male lead to be a bad person, you don't like psychological romance, then don't watch this but please, that's your own taste so don't leave weird comment pretend this is a bad story just because it's not your taste.
"Some scenes are illogical"
Before you said this, please check first if it really impossible or not. I have met a lot of people like this, they said this is impossible, this is illogical, but truth is, most of them just ignorant because when I search about it, immediately appear in internet that it ever happens. I found someone like this in forum Koroshi Ai. Please don't embarrass yourself by criticize something you don't even know. World is full of surprising things you maybe never heard. Many author also doing their research when making manga. There is a shoujo mangaka who go to fire station FOR YEARS and go to their external activity (Like competition) because she makes manga about fire fighter. She even marry fire fighter in the end. There is shoujo mangaka who interview crazy rich Japanese teenager just because she want to make crazy rich male lead. There is josei mangaka who interview bus company to make 2 chapters story about bus hijack, there is shoujo mangaka who go to Japan southern island just because she want to make 3 volumes manga, etc etc. I know all this just because the mangaka write it in manga, not including mangaka who don't tell reader. So it pissed me off when people just assume they are stupid and not doing research even before try to search the truth.

This anime is really controversial , many people hate it but also love it.
For me, I hate it. I never watch anime as uncomfortable as mushoku tensei, we were shown unnecessary perverted stuff every several minutes. Well, I think this anime is just not girls friendly. If you ever receive sexual harassment like me, seeing man's perverted way of thinking, how he steal underwear and touching someone else body without permission is not something you want to see CONSTANTLY FOR NO REASON.
Other than that, I heard some people say that this anime show bad stuff as bad and he has character development. Because I
...
am curious, I skim the manga till chapter 60. I love psychological manga, seeing character who has different moral value than me, character who do something bad or questionable is something I am familiar, Issue like rape in manga is also something I am familiar, and if you see my profile, some of my favorite manga have main characters who were rape victim. so I am not against protagonist doing something bad or bad stuff happen in manga but the difference between this anime and psychological manga is, this anime is not consistent. He touch someone else boobs and he was punched but if you read till chapter 60, in chapter 60, he touch someone else boobs. Did he receive punishment? No, anyone tell him that he is wrong? No. Anything that indicate that he is wrong? No. And not only that, he still keep the underwear and still call it god.
This is a problem and inconsistency is more problematic than nothing at all because it's confusing. You can't really know which one is bad or good since this story attitude toward bad stuff inconsistence. One of my favorite manga is Vanitas no Carte and every time the character do something bad, someone else always say it. Every. Single. Time. So we know where will we get information if the character is doing something bad or not is from other character.
About story, art and sound. I think it's basic, you can find every element of the story in other manga/anime. It has good art but anime with good art are a lot. Sound is also not remarkable. Character, Rudeus is not really 1 dimensional but other character are. Since he is the only one not 1 dimensional, I pay more attention to him, but as a girl who ever receive sexual harassment, see a manga with attention only to a person who constantly have perverted thought and sometimes do sexual harassment is not something enjoyable.
I am watching anime, other than entertainment, it's also for education. I can't shut my brain because I am thinker. If you only watch it for entertainment, you maybe can shut your brain and enjoy this anime but for me who also watch for education, I will never enjoy anime that is not consistent in treating bad as bad a. There are better anime for me to watch. No point in watching something with a story you can get anywhere else but make you uncomfortable.
I am writing this review because I saw a lot of people ridicule people who hate this anime. Not only that, I am blocked by AH Brandon Review on youtube because I write what I just write here. No wonder the comment section only have people who agree with him, such a close minded person shouldn't even write "I like discussion" in his about section, not only that he also say people like me are dummies. And so, I can't defend myself since he block me and as you can see, I write this based on the anime and the manga so I have good argument, no reason for a person to block me unless he doesn't know what to reply since I am right lol I have meet those type of people a lot, because I am right, they refuse to talk with me.

You see, this manga is psychological. It has this tag for reasons. From the moment I read the manga, I already know this is psychological (You can see the proper tag in mangaupdates) even without looking and I know many people who is not used to see this will hate it. Some psychological manga doesn't really have moral dilemma like Banana Fish, but some of them really have moral dilemma and some people can't really understand why this character act this way. Human is complex, unique. Even if we have the same problem, reaction toward that problem maybe different so it's hard to understand. What
...
we call normal maybe for other people is not, vice versa. That's why if you can't read psychological manga or prejudice toward something different with you, or doesn't even bother to think why this character act this way and label it as lack of common sense, don't read this.
For example, someone here said that why a kind person can become abusive, even if he care so much for his sister and want his sister to not know his parents are abusive.
You need to see this manga from the whole perspective:
He receive bullying, he need to endure his parents abuse, now he need to endure his relatives too. This is the reason why you shouldn't keep problem to yourself, because if you can't bear it anymore, you can explode. That's what happen to him, it ever happen to someone close to me too. He can't even see that there is someone care for him. That's why in the end of story, he said he will seek professional help.
And someone also said that they just forgive him like that, honestly, do you know how many times the kid want to abandon her brother because she can't bear it anymore. But she remember he used to be kind and he is the only family she had, so she always try again and again. His brother was also scolded in the end of story, they don't believe him. You see, when you have mental problem, I don't think the best way is to just hate them and leave them alone, but you need to lead them to seek professional help. That what the brother said he will do.
This kid here is so mature because she has been through a lot. That happen when you experience horrible things since a child. I was also like that when I was a child. You need to be mature earlier to be able to survive that environment
I don't think this is unrealistic since I can relate a lot. The plot with rent Oniichan, you see when you can't find anyone near you who you can tell your problem, you will search anywhere else. That's why people who have problem in their house find a place for them outside, even in stranger. It happens.
I hope people who think this is unrealistic just because you never experience it will search more information about life of other people. Just because you never experience it and never see it, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Art: The art is really good and it convey their emotion really well.

This manga reminds me once again why I really love psychological.
When I am reading this, I am always on edge, what they will choose? What their choice will lead them to? With all the moral dilemma and things that happen in their life, it makes me so excited with this story.
The term "righteous" and "older brother" in this manga is really complicated. Everyone have their own perception, what is righteous and what's older brother. This manga explore this term and show us the reason why this person have this perception.
The characters are also complicated. All of their choice in life influenced by their
...
past and perception. For this manga to be able to reach this point in just 16 chapters are really good.
Art is also really good. I always like this twins, Morie Satoshi and Ogawa Chise (Takagi Shigeyoshi). Their psychological story is always interesting. Both their art are similar and nowadays their art get better.
I am really enjoying this and this become one of my favorite manga. It has been a while since I feel this thrill by reading a story and how the ending is different with what I expect. I don't know the term "older brother" in this story is as deep as this to realize it's possible for the ending to be like this.
I don't think this manga deserve this score, if you don't like psychological or story with moral dilemma, please don't read this manga.

Story:
I really like the combination of melancholy and funny moment in this anime. We learn their backstory, foreshadowing what kind of problem they have. They explain the rules of water polo in easy to understand manner ( for example child draw). In the first episode, we also see how people suffer because of the accident like you can see when Minato eat with his family (His family sad that Minato not interested to do something he loves before) or when her sister cry in the middle of the night because of trauma. It seems this happen from time to time. Well, of course the anime
...
won't show this all the time since their focus is water polo and they also have other character to explore.
Character:
Since first episode, we already know that Minato suffering because of expectation by people around him and how he is not the same anymore (his body for example). Maybe many people who watch this don't realize but you can tell from his facial expression.
The other character who is already explored a bit is Eitarou. In episode 5, we know that he is haraguro, selfish and rude. We already see foreshadow of it since first episode. We also see his character development in episode 5.
The other character is most likely will be explored too since we already see foreshadow of Joujima with his father.
Why I explain all of this? It seems many people think these character is really shallow when it's not. Minato is not only easy to adapt but he is also a really positive person. I am similar with Minato in which I easily adapt to situation and I can easily change my emotion and my face, it makes many people think I am okay when I am actually not. So it really bothered me to see some people say, "Minato seems okay even if he lose his memory" when this anime obviously show us in every episode that he is actually troubled by the fact that he lose his memory.
I think the characters can be classified to certain stereotype but I don't think there is something wrong with that as long as they have depth. Even we, as human being, often being classified by our personality, for example: MBTI, Enneagram. Big Five Personality, etc. And I see potential of this anime explore them more since I already see foreshadow of it.
Art:
It's MAPPA so the animation is really good.
Enjoyment:
I enjoy this anime and I don't have major complain. I hope they explore the character more and also we will learn more about waterpolo in later episode.
