It's been bugging me for awhile, so answer please. If you like yuri, do you automatically dislike yaoi stuff? I'm just curious. Yaoi is very disgusting to me, but truely I don't know the reason. I just can't bear it, no matters how many times I tried to watch single show. Probably because I hate how misogynistic and unrealistic it is. Moreover stupid fandom girls are extremely annoying, just seeing them being way to loud and obnoxious during shipping everything makes me sick. Despite my humble opinion, I notice many poeple tends to love both genres. Seems like yaoi is more talked about (controversial issue, etc.), but do you all think it equates to being worth popular?
Generally, what's your opinion about yaoi?

I pretty much have problems with both sides when it comes to it. I like it when they tell a story of true same sex love but if they are just fan serves galore then fuck it I"m not reading it.

No, why would you do something like dislike automatically something without trying it? I think there are a lot of yaoi anime and manga out there that are pretty good and interesting, of curse it all depends on the story. If you are tolerant about the different sexualities why shouldn't you watch an anime for the fact that is yaoi? I mean, if the story is great then go ahead! that's what I do, and I like yaoi or any type of manga.

To be honest, I can relate where you are coming from, but I'll have to say no.

I like Yaoi, but I won't deny that I hate its fan base for all the reasons you listed above and more. Perhaps it's because it is has more people, but the Yaoi fan base is a lot more vocal and rabid. However, that doesn't mean that all Yaoi fans are like that or the genre itself is to blame.

Anime/manga forum communities are more female than male. Thus, it's understandable that Yaoi, with all its eye candy, attracts a lot more viewers and curious out lookers. Girls tend to disapprove of lesbian relationships more often and guys typically stick to more action-y titles. So it's understandable that Yaoi is the more popular of the two. Popularity is something to gain because it appeals to the audience. Quality is irrelevant. Since it succeeds in that, than yes, I believe it deserves its popularity.

I like both. But I can't stand most of the unnecessary dramatic Yuri (which is more common in nowadays. I really hate modern Yuri except for a few ones.) and unrealistic Yaoi couples that don't even fit (I really dislike Dante x Vergil like hell, I'd slaughter those who support that shipping. It may be more bara than Yaoi but still.)

I had a hard time even looking at a Yaoi picture when I first discovered it too, but suddenly it turned out to be a guilty pleasure until I actually liked it through the bottom of my heart.

Also since Yaoi is like one of the very few ways of fanservice aimed at girls and tends to be more satisfying then yeah. You might as well as start with something REALLY light like Gravitation or go with Yaoi humor but not Yaoi or anything similar.

also, why do people keep blaming fanbase for everything? I wonder if fanbases actually ruin enjoyment. I have seen a few Narutards and a lot of "otaku" who are proud to be called that even though its an insult, I still enjoy Naruto and love anime. It's just my opinion though

I don't want to be misunderstood...
I don't blame any fandom. Yet, in this case, it doesn't help. Yup, everyone is different - certainly it depends on person and character... but generally I can't admit those adolescent girls mostly behave rational (at least whenever I had opportinity to spend some time with them). As I mentioned, I just can't stand neverending condition of being exalted. Too childish, I believe. I'm not saying averybody does so. That's all I wanted to add.

Sorry if there is any disparity in viewpoints here, but this topic is somewhat of a hot potato, in regards to bringing up the question of sexual orientation. I am a straight male. So, almost naturally I have no problem with the Yuri genre. However, I do appreciate work (Yuri and Yaoi alike) that is more down to earth and reflects the true difficulty that homosexuals face in todays world. (which are sadly shrinking in number as many works of anime and manga become gradually more fanservice oriented) I myself have been exposed to the Yaoi genre a multitude of times (by friends who are both female and gay), but I find myself stifling a grimace each time. Sometimes I feel bad about it, but then again the kind of yaoi I have seen is mostly fanservice, perhaps I will give the genre another try in the future. Hope I have not upset anyone, best regards~

I prefer Yaoi (well, Shounen-Ai, I don't watch porn stuff). I love Yuri, but like Yaoi even more.
While Yuri tends to be cute, beautiful, Yaoi is more mysterious, sexy (in my opinion, and I have to say that I'm a female and straight). It has this "forbidden" aspect Yuri hasn't.

my thoughts: yuri is seen as less "forced" if you can get what im saying. yuri is the small bridge between really good friends to lovers for girls as they can naturally hold hands and kiss, where as a guy doing that is seen as "gross" or harder to some extend, most of the yaoi/shounen ai is romance where as yuri and shounen ai is more towards other genres with romance as a sub genre in it. the forbidden fruit of yaoi is also a big tag to why the genre is relatively popular amongst the niche crowds as humans tend to seek what they cant have or is seen as forbidden. personally i find love is love in all forms but (even as a pansexual male) it is nicer/sweeter to watch romance between 2 girls then 2 guys

its normal to dislike yaoi (IMO ) cause man should act manly towards other man, its very weird to see 2 man cuddling each other -_-'' n kissing each other D:
unlike yuri, it seem acceptable to see 2 girl holding hand, hugging each other n do some cute stuff =3

Obviously you've never seen real-life gay couples. In real life they would act just as straight couples do, which means cuddling and kissing.
This is the mentality of yuri fans that I dislike: that it's more acceptable for girls to be all cuddly rather than boys because "it's cuter". Yaoi fans do it too, and it equally pisses me off. Queer fetishization is never a good thing. If you only support gays or lesbians just because they're hot and are blatantly homophobic of the other group because they're not good fapping material, you are a shallow, shallow supporter. Don't hate, don't discriminate.
tl;dr I like both yaoi and yuri if they're not obviously pandering to queer fetishizers.
I'm just an incredibly gifted faker.

Nothing really against yaoi at all... It's just that I don't find much yaoi that I would read... The rape fetish is really a put off. Whether it's manga or VN's.... >.>
That and I don't like it when they force at least one of them to be a seme and uke lol ^^'

And yes, fanbases are quite capable of making people hate something, even if it's not they're fault they're fans over glorify things ._.

While I've always love yuri, my views on yaoi have changed quite a lot over time.

When I was 13/14/15 I was going through a pretty intense phase of hating yaoi for the reasons you just listed.
I cooled down at some point cause I learned to separate fandoms from actual work, but I'm still not a huge fan or anything. I enjoy m/m ships if I think they have a good dynamic, but rarely read actual yaoi.
Mostly cause it usually bottles down to exaggerated sex scenes and that's not really my thing. Cause I'm attracted to women so I'd rather see two women having sex (though it's different in real life porn. I don't like porn in general, but I prefer gay porn since you can't fake an erection while pretty much all of lesbian porn out there is so obviously faked out and only made for men that it's painful to watch)
Hey, but if a yaoi manga has a good story with good relationships and characters hell yeah I'll read it and like it!

I love yuri but I can't say I don't like Yaoi as well. I don't find anything wrong in both, they're all homosexual anyway. I do like the thought of being able to be with someone that you like regardless of the gender so I guess that's the reason why I don't mind them. I do prefer yuri over yaoi though. I love girls. c:

Yaoi is alright, I seem to like implied yaoi more though. I wouldn't really search for yaoi only manga/anime since I prefer yuri more. If I'm watching something and two males characters have a great dynamic then of course I will ship them.

Well i'm an hetero male, actually i love yuri and shoujo-ai probably cause i like girls, it's just natural for me not going to look into boy meets boy stuff.
Although i rlly like yuri and silike yaoi i also enjoy hetero rom stuff.
Let's add that yaoi transform men in girls sometimes....
