THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I just checked this episode out and I am in tears!

I never had such a anime discovery! Thank you MAL for guidance!

Here is what I have to share.

The beginning was confusing but since I started this at this episode well. I got that there was some kind gang beat up on another gang. Then to get this clear the girl Miyazawa with the guy Okazaki went to straight things out. That went bad.

So they go and try to resolve it with some fake Kazuto (I think that is his name but he is the girl Miyazawa's brother) which they try to do with Sunohara.

I just wished they did not eat that poison bread.

The rest is way too teary! The fight was horrible! Okazaki, that guy he almost got killed 4 or 5 times. Count the blows many of those if he did not dodge....ouch! Dead might be it.

The rest is this:

A)

B)

A) I cried cause I though the brother was in hospital. I read some stuff aorund the net.

B) Punching that girl Miyazawa (sorry if it is not clear it was hard to take cause the frame went too fast) and then seeing her cry.

Too much tears *goes away* it's too much.

OH GOD!

I though I was a though guy. *_*

Yeah I call it poison bread. :P No offense whatsoever.
Yeah I have another one. That makes me freak out!

I did not see Nagisa in first season like this:

What a fight o.o

Must have been all those times Tomoya's dad beat the crap out of him or something, being that resilient.

If you watched Kanon (2006) and remember Akiko's Jam....

That's what the Jam is. It's not any old Jam. All you people who remember, should know that getting KO'ed is appropriate.

Yeah, I did watch Kanon 2006, but I found totally inappropriate doing a joke like that in that serious situation, that's all. If you think about it, Tomoya got the crap beaten out of him thanks to her loved Nagisa XD

You're not alone on that. I think the episode could have survived without it too.

Good episode all around though.

It was kind obvious something more serious happened to Yukine's brother, at least he is in a long coma.. the did not reveal the reason (or did they and I just missed it?)

I liked the appearance of Akiko's Jam, it was obvious that it had to make an appearance in Clannad sooner or later, Bread+Jam that fits.

I had about the same feeling when I was watching Kanon (2006), later I was used to tears when it got extremely emotional ;)

I actually rather liked the jam part. Yay Kanon!! It was slightly inappropriate but Akiko's jam is Akiko's jam.

Anyway, I didn't really find this near as sad as the other arcs. It was enjoyable and Tomoya really was awesome in that fight but I felt that they could have handled this arc better and made it much more of a tear-jerker.

The lights are finally explained! That seems to be a really important plot point. Next episode looks like it's going back to Nagisa's arc and the true After Story.

me too :/
if it was a joke, k. not so funny, but k. but... it was part of the story, wtf
and the part when yukine played kazuto was rediculous, too. "I'm kazuto, fight me please >3<"
this episode was a joke... only the ending was good, but I'd expect more from an anime that came from Key studio...

Lap napping scene was the best, Yukine was especially adorable there. Seeing that the adaptation is almost entirely different from the original story I'm glad that at least it was included even if with somewhat awkward changes.

I'm glad that they gave Yukine a couple of episodes they wasn't bad at all and it's definitely better than nothing but I enjoyed the original Yukine arc much more than the story which KyoAni made.

draker said:

I second that. The timing for the joke was chosen absolutely terribly and even the jam doesn't saves it. There is plenty of humour in Clannad but humorous and serious scenes of it usually are staying separated. Using a silly joke like this as a plot device in a serious scene just greatly cheapens the value of it.

Maybe they thought it was a great tension lifter or soemthing. They have to relieve the tension a little or else the audience will be suffocated. In order to lessen the tension curve, they did the jam bit. So it can build up again with Tomoya fighting Sasaki.

Then again, it had to happen. Ultimate bread + ultimate jam = ouch.

If it were used in a harmless situation not leading to anything that would be fine but they made the reason for Tomoya to go fighting because everyone else got knocked out from eating the bread which is just silly. I suppose it should be suitable for shows like School Rumble or Zero no Tsukaima but I expect different level of storytelling from Clannad.

I didn't feel much for the story until the end, which I admit was touching.

So Kazuto was able to go 1v1 against hax Tomoyo, I guess that makes me dislike her a little bit less.

And who thought the Furukawa were friends with the Minase. Fucking loled at the deadly combination.

Didn't I just cry two episodes ago?? And yet there I was again, sniffling.

From all the VN fans, it seems this arc was poorly done. Perhaps if I had seen a "proper" arc, I would have appreciated it more, but this one didn't really get to me until the end. Tomoya fighting with Nagisa crying, and Yukine appearing and sobbing, started me going. Ahhh, Clannad.

Also glad to see the lights finally explained, although I didn't need Yukine to tell me that Tomoyo was special :3 Lol.

Definitely looking forward to next ep! Looks like we're finally getting some of what we want to see in regards to Tomoya. I can't wait.

Seems like the directors are trying to accomplish too much on a single episode. I haven't played the VN so I don't know what the differences are between the source material and this adaptation, but adding comedic effect in an arc (or just this episode) as dramatic as this one feels out of place. really, really, really out of place. if it happened at the beginning of this story arc, where it could have an insignificant consequence on the direction of the plot, I would have been fine with that.

that aside, I thought that latter half of the episode was excellent. animation was top notch on the Okazaki-Sasaki fight.

Wow, am I the only person who hated this episode?

Seriousely, I couldnt WAIT for it to end, a plot I couldnt care less about, a detestable group of side characters, a ridiculous Jam + Bread joke that SOMEHOW became a significant plot element, and worse:

A romance show about the relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa that in 8 episodes has failed to show any form of progress within their relationship at all.

This episode was easily the worst Clannad episode Ive ever seen, this arc has been, thus far, the worst arc in the After Story series, which has produced a total of 3 bad arcs out of 4, the only good thing so far was the first episodes baseball match.

Seriously, this show needs to stop wasting time with pointless filler arcs surrounding minor characters and start focusing on the main characters who made the first series such a pleasure to watch.

LOL at Akiko's jam+Sanae's bread. Perfect combo right there xD
I don't know about this arc. It was okay...but I don't know. I'm a tad happy it's over, but at the same time it was good. I feel this one was okay, but nothing compared to some past Clannad arcs. Wonder who/what's next~ Hopefully, it'll go back to the previous pure awesomeness :D
And, I'm sad :[ I haven't seen Kotomi in so long, I hope she'll make an appearance soon.

Does this mean the worlds of Clannad, Kanon, and possibly Air are interconnected like the Naruverse?

Good episode, but like everyone else, the jam scene just didn't seem to fit the overall mood of the episode...

These arcs are not filler since they were in the game, but this particular arc is changed quite a bit from the game. These arcs do not however, appear in the after story portion of the game, but the school life portion which proceeds afterstory

The main reason Kyoani is probably doing these arcs is because these characters don't appear that much or at all in the real afterstory.

loved this ep... then again, i havent really found an ep of clannad i dont like so far (at least not off the top of my head).

i had a gut feeling that kazuto was dead when they were talking with tomoyo inside and yukine's emotions when they showed her reflection in the window... i'm pretty used to these types of shows, so they get very easy to figure out. obviously, this was a serious (mostly anyways) episode, and since this is one of those tear-jerker shows, you just know that when something like the little sister of the brother everyone talks about but nobody has seen, that is also supposedly hospitalized, crying silently to herself in a serious discussion like they were having at the time, and something like a reflection of her in a window with (i could be wrong, but it just looks like it to me right now in my memory) rain pouring outside of it during the night... yeah... pretty obvious that her brother is either never coming out of the hospital due to something like a coma, or that he is dead. And, since the coma thing gives hope to the fact that he might one day magically return, and the gangs will end up fighting again cuz of it, I'm going towards the latter...

and yes, i thought of all this the second i saw her crying in the window >_> that's how used to these shows i am...

also, i wont mention a certain "Jam" moment of the episode that was completely unnescesary... err... CRAP, too late -.-

Heh, despite the fact that i could tell he was dead from 5 minutes into the show, still made me cry at the end when she was at her family grave...

this ep gets a 9/10 just cuz of that stupid jam thing >_>

This arc was very short like Shima's... ;_;

But Yukine had shown me in this ep that she has a really strong heart, even disguising as her older bro to protect her "banchou" family.

(And I must confess, she makes a really hot trap as Kazuto with the bandages included. I think I have a fetish over bandages or something XD)

Anyways, the bread and jam part was a little irrelevant, they should had... Did something less stupid to knock out the guys that isn't Sanae's bread.

And I think everyone should be with me that the part of all the gangsters praying for Kazuto makes you want to cry.

i did cry x_x

clannad has always had the ability to get me at least teary-eyed for some reason >_> meh, i'm just a sensitive guy when it comes to drama / tragedy / romance stuff like this... but there's nothing wrong with that ^_^

EDIT: i guessed that yukine would do something like pretend to be her brother... at one point in the show, i actually had the thought that she was basically doing her brother's job by pretending to be him and secretly "pulling the strings" (but not in an evil way like i just made it sound lol).

two punches in this ep made me cringe, the one where the other gang member (forgot his name) smashes both fists into tomoya's face and that huge splash of water explodes from the impact, and of course, when yukine got hit...

If that is your course you should know in my post of that pic Nagisa freaking was because of that double punch and water splash. Now I have never seen Nagisa like that. That was horrendous in the sense of feeling how she felt. At least trying to feel like her at that time.

Euh I had too much pain to even go all the way to understanding but it was a death scare of sorts.

What i really like about Yukine's arc was that it didn't have the boy's annoying ass mother in it. My god, she pissed me off in the game.

Anyways, two episodes is indeed short, but thats because her entire scenario was short itself. You'd finish it in about 3-4 hours once your locked onto her route.

@Heart of Storm: You can't call it filler arcs. I mean, the entirety of the true After Story takes place when Okazaki graduates and Nagisa _______ again. I don't think most of us will enjoy the sudden one year timeskip. Also, like Yukine's scenario, After Story was incredibly short as well. Only a few hours longer. Lastly, all of the Yukine jokes were already used in season one.

While I wasn't enjoying this short arc entirely from the previous episode, I actually did enjoy this episode and it was a sad/emotional ending.

I loved the Sanae bread and Akiko jam (Kanon 2006) link... I had to pause because I was laughing soo hard, mainly because of the oblivious Sunohara standing there with a glowing bomb! and the sound the spread made... ahh that jam brang back memories!

Although the arc was short - this episode was wonderful~

Yukine taking a nap in Tomoya's lap was priceless. She looked so cute just lying there and sleeping - and it was nice to see Nagisa get a little jealous, at least we know she can feel that way :) I also thought it was sweet the way Yukine tried to stop both the gangs from fighting - such a peacemaker~

Although, as much as I love Sunohara - it was mostly his fault for getting everyone riled up about Kazuto's return.. >__< And it wasn't fair that Tomoya had to step in and fight. Nonetheless, it was a damn good fight and it really did hit me hard when Nagisa was crying over Tomoya and Yukine was tearing up because she couldn't stop the violence. Moreover, when Yukine pretended to be her brother and she got hit -- aw, that made me so sad~

My favorite scene from the episode had to be the ending when both gang members were praying at the grave. I don't know why - but that really made me shed some tears~ It was refreshing to see Yukine really happy - I just wish we could have gotten to see what Yukine's brother looked like~ He was played out to be a cool character :)

Great arc - can't wait for the next one ^_^

Good way to put it !
This is the Famous list of things you wana do but only Once before you die, because it's so painfull or you just don't want to do it twice!

This was a great episode. This arc was A LOT better then the Sunohara one from before. Next act is about Tomoyo, let's wish It will be great.
