lol ~ KajiKaji's character as Sky Tree and his sempai as Tokyo Tower!!

He's meeting a monk for help, one of the six poets(?). The reason made a monk mad.

Then it moved to another story. The guy has a sister who is good at poetry. She's popular with guys but she rejected them because she wants to be blessed. He said he is in love with her sister and challenged her. He said he's going to visit her 100 nights. She said she wants to be a dancer and wants him to allow her when she married him, which he rejected. Then he's remembering about the conversation they did when they did about being emperor or not.

She wants to be a singer knowing that it's going to be hard. It seems like him vs his sister. She was thinking about being proud and being blessed with her own power, not under a man. She's disappointed about brother is thinking like all other men.

Final "battle" day + heavy rainy day. She was worried about him, but he is safe. She still rejected him. She chose her dream over him even though she loves him, too. He created the poem when seeing her dancing and hoping that she's blessed.

Another love story next ep.

What a heartfelt, bittersweet story. These stories are very well-done and get me so worked up in only one episode.

Oh the irony of the man preaching over how a woman needs to accomodate the man's needs, that she isn't mature enough to see how she should behave. Yoshiko was very wise to realise her own way to happiness, not through someone else, but herself. And she went for it, even though it may cause her suffering. No matter the path we wander, we will all suffer. The shorter, easier path may be a blessing at first, but suffering later on. The longer, more difficult path may hold a lot of suffering, but in the end you might realise your full potential as a human being.

Many times we want to cling to those we love, cause we are selfish. We resent them when they go away, as if that love never meant anything. That love was never true. By practising the buddhism's non-attachment we can be present when with those we love, but never feel the need to hold them down, should they want to wander off. I am glad both of them had that resolve in the end.

These stories are very philosophic.

I don't know how much can I rely on this anime's information alone.
Let's pretend that all I've seen is nearly close to the exact truth.

Then Yoshiko was one lucky lady to be able to make it out virgin after a man had approached and seen her face. 'Cause according to my knowledge about Ancient Japan, many ladies couldn't make it out untouched after faces being seen, especially when the ladies' hearts had been swayed by the suitors, the suitors then took advantages over. The males that time seemed to have small patience and low self-control, also people having wrong sense of justice, never really went there and rescued the girls.

Though, it's still sad that Yoshiko had to make her way through the marriage. For at the time, being single for a lady( whose rank was high enough to the level that bamboo blinds were needed ) must be a tough life living in scandal of being gossipped of.

That was honestly so beautiful. I was in tears near the end. I loved the way it ended up though, it made me happy.

Reminds me of this quote from Nana: “Nana...how come being happy and making your dreams come true are two different things? Even now, I still don't know why...”

They are NOT blood-related siblings.
They love each other LIKE brother and sister since they were children.
Though this brother-sister-ish relation is fiction, it is a well-known fact that Munesada loved Yoshiko (Komachi).

Aww another bittersweet end T_T this anime is very beautiful, its so fascinating the way in which love was portrayed during those times. "Love" was so much more deeper and had more meaning back then.

Hopefully next one will be a happy end Dx

Woah woah
Calm down,,

You got it wrong!
They were not siblings !
They were just raised up together and they did realize that they weren't siblings from the very beginning. It's just that that lady had a habit of calling her 'childhood friend' an elder brother, that's it.

Some fact that might be considered useful,
Male family members could freely see ladies' faces.
If not, there needed to be blinds between them.
And as I recall, females could sit closer to the blinds while males had to keep the distance. So that the ladies could see the visitors' faces while her visitors could not do the other way round.

THEY WEREN'T TRUE SIBLINGS.
But I can't say for sure that there weren't truly blood-related, I just don't know, there might be a possibility that they might share some though. I don't read Japanese History.

Hope you come back to see all the comments

I agree with the person above. You need to keep an open mind as to what the setting is for this anime. Yes, back in those days incest was common, this show is a bit historical so I wasn't too surprised. Japan wasn't the only one. In Ancient Egypt incest was a common practice as a way to keep the blood line pure. Even in European Monarchs many family members were related because of political marriages in which cousins would get married. Long story short chill, it was a common practice back then. Of course now it's mostly looked down upon and no one is trying to encourage it. Please keep in mind this anime is historical. ._.

I'll try to avoid adding to the hijack of the topic and just point out that in cultures where a certain degree of incest was tolerated (or mandated in terms of the Egyptian Pharohs) infanticide was also often practiced as a way of dealing with some of the negative genetic consequences. Let's end the digression now because the original post on "Siblings in Blood" was so obvious a misunderstanding of the relationship of the two main characters that it was indistinguishable from a troll (particularly with the followup comments).

What I found really noteworthy about this episode was how it commented on some of the conflicts between the natural desires of a woman to fully use her talents and abilities, and the consequences of doing so in a society which had a pretty restrictive set of expectations on what was allowable. Is it really so different today? Do salarymen still go out drinking late at night as an expectation of work while wives and families sit at home? Is it really better to have all that freedom and then look around at age 40 and realize that you are likely to grow old alone? Big questions, and then a kick-ass ending with a poem about trying to hold on to a fleeting moment of love and the beauty of a woman's face. That's why this show is so good...
Please don't feed the trolls!
In my next life I want to collide at the corner with the cute transfer student
carrying a piece of toast in her mouth

Fantastic episode! Very romantic and sad. Interesting take on who Ono no Komachi was. (The true origin of that poet is unknown, but she is suspected to have been a low-ranking consort or a lady-in-waiting of an emperor, possibly Emperor Ninmyō.)

As for the siblings aspect, yes, it does make the story a bit creepy, but royalty married their relatives all over the world in those times. Also, at one point he mentions that he was "raised as her brother", but I got the impression that he was not actually her brother. She mentions that he was the grandson of an emperor, perhaps he was a bastard child that was sent away to be raised by a retainer or something like that.

Anyway, it is fiction, since very little is known of the actual life of the poetess. I found it very touching!

I can't say I'm much of a romantic, but I'm enjoying this show all the same. It certainly reminds me of Hyouge Mono and Aoi Bungaku.

Legends abound of Komachi in love. The most well known is a story about her relationship with Fukakusa no Shosho, a high-ranking courtier. Komachi promised that if he visited her continuously for a hundred nights, then she would become his lover. Fukakusa no Shosho visited her every night, but failed once towards the end. Despairing, he fell ill and subsequently died. When Komachi learned of his death she was overcome with grief.

Well, that's even more depressing. =l

Very heartwarming story. At first I was worried that Yoshiko's hopes were immature in the beginning because it seemed as though she had unrealistic/immature expectations about court life. But over the span of the 100 nights you can see that she is very serious and is being realistic about her dreams. As sad as it is that they couldn't be together, I couldn't help but be immensely happy for her.

To be honest, I don't recall them ever directly stating that they weren't related. (It could be the subs that I read, though.) However, based off of his explanations of his inability to become Emperor (when they were children) you would assume that they have different family backgrounds and are not full blood siblings. And even if they were, I don't see how it ruins the story in any way.

What a sad episode. Whether it was incest or not, I still loved those two together. And okay the guy is HOT. Most good looking so far out of 3 episodes. :P

And @ the person who said they'd be dropping the show cuz of incest: LOL Dude calm down! This show still rocks and they wouldn't have every single episode about incest or something. Chill. ;D

Very interesting episode regarding Yoshiko choosing her dream over love. Even if you love someone and s/he loves you back, your partner should not stop you from following your dream. I really liked how she said she wants to achieve happiness on her own and not gain it from someone else. Even if Munesada was right that that's how women were treated like at that time, it doesn't mean that he had to follow it. He clearly believes that women should be protected regardless, so I'd say that it wasn't a good argument on his part. Still, it was sad that in the end they didn't get together since they did love each other, and such mutual love is hard to find.

The sibling issue confused me as well since it wasn't explicitly explained. However, the fact that Yoshiko kept asking about Munesada's parents and grandparents was an indication that they were not actually related. Since very little is known about Ono no Komachi, this is all just imagined based on what the society was like back then.

Of the 4 love stories we've gotten, I'm most invested in this one. This is a heavier and sadder episode when compared to the previous episodes.

In the end, they were not meant to be together from the beginning. Their visions and outlooks on life are different. It honestly felt quite unfair because he actually went to visit her for 100 nights even through a huge rain and a small accident that almost took his life, but they still didn't end up together..

No one and nothing is wrong here, they just want two different things that contradict each other. I hope they can find their happiness.
