THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Muramasa Sengo (千子 村正 Sengo Muramasa) was a famous swordsmith who founded the Muramasa school and lived during the Muromachi period (14th to 16th centuries) in Japan. Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook said that Muramasa "was a most skillful smith but a violent and ill-balanced mind verging on madness, that was supposed to have passed into his blades. ... They were popularly believed to hunger for blood and to impel their warrior to commit murder or suicide."

The school of sword-making at Ise province was famous for the extraordinary sharpness of their blades.
...
Muramasa's swords fell out of favor with the Japanese government when Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun, establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate, in 1603. It is said that Ieyasu had lost many friends and relatives to Muramasa blades and had cut himself badly with one, so he forbade his samurai to wield blades made by Muramasa. This contributed even more to the Muramasa legend and led to many plays and dramas in Japanese literature featuring the blades. Due to the stigma attached to them, many Muramasa blades had their signature changed or removed. Since opponents of the Tokugawa Shoguns would often wish to acquire Muramasa blades, forgeries of Muramasa blades were also often made.
...
It has also been told that once drawn, a Muramasa blade has to draw blood before it can be returned to its scabbard, even to the point of forcing its wielder to wound himself or commit suicide. Thus, it is thought of as a demonic cursed blade that creates bloodlust in those who wield it.

Wish I'd known all this before watching, but I got the gist. Nice artwork and music, effective for what was mostly a collection of stills.

Without any spoken words this short animation managed to convey the increasing lunacy of the samurai and his despair successfully. The trraditional music and images of the landscape added significantly to the atmosphere.

A bit predictable but still enjoyable.
I liked the absence of speech.

Nice little story. Although I have never watched No- or Kabuki-theatre or something of the likes, I imagine it to feel like watching Muramasa, all with the sounds and music.

Great short. The animation and art were probably my favorite part, drawn, simple, yet detailed when it needed to. And it told an interesting(albeit slightly predictable) story.

Short but impressive.

Story was as everyone mentioned a bit predictable, but the combination of the traditional images and music were spot on.

Seems like the Muramase-sword is getting a new owner in the end.

"Charactor design: Hyakkimaru" - jokes in credits, lol. I wonder what did the writing on the stone say.

What could have been an average thing is enhanced by the absence of dialogue, the choice in music & art style and the lack of animation.

Score: 8/10
Enjoyment: 3/5

PS: thanks @St0rmblade !

The score is absolutely amazing. I also love the red color scheme whenever someone approaches the sword.

Limited animation done the best way, easily one of the best experimental Tezuka works I have seen.

Art and music also tied really well together, I might be an sucker for the samurai aesthetic but the atmosphere with this one was indeed really nice for such a short film.
I like talking about anime.

A decent short which conveys the feeling neatly in the time. The background art was excellent with some really good parts of the music. 7/10

Beautiful natural imagery combined with unhinged bloodthirst. The minimalist presentation brings to mind old forms of storytelling. Great!
