The description/synopsis seems interesting enough, but the shounen tag bothers me somewhat.

If you've read it, how's the manga?

The manga is really good.
Interesting plot but whoever added the shounen tag is an idiot.

The shounen tag doesn't mean jack shit. All it shows is that the magazine it is published in is targeted towards the shounen demographic. Tasogare is published in GGJ and it is shounen.

nowadays nearly all manga/anime are labeled generically as either shounen/shoujou (boy/girl) (or the occasional seinen/josei, for the older demographics). It doesn't mean anything more than the fact that it's geared towards a more male or female demographic.

I don't even pay attention to that label anymore, you'd be amazed by how many shoujo-esque plots become shounen anime with a dash of ecchi... =.= haha.

Shounen is basically just a "main" tag. You need a sub tag to explain what "kind of shonen" it will be.

All the series in Shonen Jump is a shonen eventhough it doesnt involve fighting or competing.

It's just a tag

Yes shounen tag means it's gonna be shit for little kids but you won't watch it because you're mature and watch mature anime only.

Ah, I'm not looking for supremacy in maturity or anything. I just wanna make sure I'm not watching some Bleach/Naruto bullshit.

From your 10s alone you could probably class

Angel Beats
Death Note
Haruhi
S;G
Bakemonogatari

as shounen.

Understandable. I just don't see how a shounen tag affects the quality of something. You'd be surprised at how many things have a shounen tag on this site, but are actually awesome anime.

But, to be realistic, who really follows(or even believes) in the tags on this site?

lol

I suppose so.

But, you get what I'm talking about.

Maybe I'm being a bit moronic, but I always look at shounen with some suspicion, lol.

Why would I not know that? That wasn't my point -- I was implying that if you consider that a series like K-ON! is seinen, it makes judging an anime based on the target demographic of its manga seem silly. I just happened to use a seinen example instead of a shounen one.

most great manga and great art in general tend to transcend traditional categories in my experience - labels mean very little to me in general - a good story is a good story...

The main characters in Boku No Pico are all adolescents. Does that make it a shounen show?

Remember, shounen is a demographic. This just means the target audience would be boys and teenage males.

It does not, and is not supposed to mean anything about the content. A demographic label describes the target audience, but not the content.

The confusion here seems to be coming from people who think shounen is a genre, when it is not. Shounen is not a genre, just like the way seinen, josei and shoujo are not genres either.

Something being labeled shounen does not automatically mean it is a story filled with nothing but endless fighting and action, or other stereotypes regarding shounen as a (mistaken) "genre".
