Erwin Stoff, film producer of The Matrix & A Scanner Darkly, is developing a live-action version of the popular anime series Cowboy Bebop. In an interview Stoff stated “I’m really excited to be working on it, and it’s in the really early stages. We just signed it the other day.” . He also promised "A real degree of faithfulness" and added, “When I met with them in Japan, one of the first things that I brought up was the experience that we had on A Scanner Darkly, and how hard we worked to remain faithful to Philip K. Dick, and that was our big concern here.” The film is being developed for Fox.

The American film industry needs to stay the hell away from masterpiece anime. The latest, but not the last great anime to be destroyed, I'm sure.

If some little prick like Adam Brody is Spike, I will fly into a murderous rage.

Now, see... If this man is faithful, I can really see Bebop becoming popular because the animation element was lifted. I'll go see it, but more than likely the original anime will still be #1 to me.

Let's see how things go.

If they make the movie, they can't make it some lame average "how they all met" story. Go right into the meat and potatoes of the story with something like Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

Unlike the planned live-action Akira movie, this one sounds like it might be good.

This is actually pretty hard to screw up. Just about everything can be reproduced well for live-action as opposed to most other anime adaptations (*cough*DBZ*cough*). If they mainly focus on the Spike/Julia/Vicious plot, there should be no problems and it even could turn out to be GREAT.

The fact that 75% of the movies this guy is involved with have starred Keanu Reeves is my only worry. Poor Spike...

Instead of this live-action movie they should have a second animated movie, or OVAs :3.

My first thought on reading this thread's title was "What is with America and turning anime into live-action movies these days? Stop it..."

Then I paused and figured that I should actually watch Cowboy Bebop before making any assumptions as to whether this would be a good or bad idea. But for the most part it seems that making a Cowboy Bebop film would be much easier than making a live-action film of any other anime.

A lot of video games are also very easy to adapt, yet you have atrocities like the Hitman movie and Alone in the Dark.

I most likely won't watch it anyway.

For me, a key part of Cowboy Bebop is the MUSIC. Even if they do reproduce everything else in live action, without the trademark Yoko Kanno music, it just wouldn't feel right to me. They need to keep the music, or hire Kanno to write more....

Indeed. If they get The Seatbelts back together they can have my money, lots of it.If this movie doesn't have Kanno & The Seatbelts it isn't Bebop.

Agree, 100%. The original music has got to be there, or at least the same jazzy sound.

I wasn't a big fan of bebop. But as far as live action goes I expect we'll start seeing more and more of it, because movie makers are running out of ideas/comic books.

I have high hopes for this movie. If they do this right, this will be EPIC. Although, I hope they go with a reltively unknown cast, because I just can't imagine anyone in Hollywood filling the roles of the Bebop crew.

And as for The Seatbelts, I agree that this movie NEEDS their music. They made the show.

Well if you've noticed, the only animated movies MADE in america seem to be presented towards yougner audiences, and maybe the directors think thats how it should be, so they make it live action to keep older audiences from avoiding it.....or something like that.

anyways, if they screw this up, they will have hordes of raving fanboys/fangirls attacking their studios XD.

(although i plan to go see DBZ just to see how badly they fuck it up, i think it will be nothing but one big comedy to me)

I cannot think of one live-action movie based on a remotely serious anime/manga that has turned out well. This concerns me. Bebop is sacred. Do not mess with it. We do not want to see any personal artistic interpretations of it. And they had better give Spike his cigarette.

He's just a money man, not a creative type.

The only way this adaptation has a chance is if a really good assertive filmmaker takes the helm, I'm talking someone like the Wachowskis, Darren Aronofsky, Alfonso Cuarón or Kim Ji-woon... (uh, they're pretty much all I trust. I dont even trust Watanabe, because he doesnt have a track record in film)

Otherwise its going to be: 1) a trainwreck, 2) bland and a complete waste of time, effort, money and potential.

Dont even get me started on who should write the damn thing...
