According to the tweet of Takeda Yasuhiro (GAINAX's producer), Kon Satoshi passed away due to pancreatic cancer. He was 46. Mangaka Yuuki Masami also confirmed the news.

According to Cinema Today, MAD HOUSE announced that Kon Satoshi passed away in the early morning of August 24th. He had been working on a new anime "Yume Miru Kikai" (Yume Miru Kikai official website).

#==========================
Maruyama Masao, the former president of Madhouse Studios, tweeted on August 24th that a director closely related to the studio had suddently passed away. The tweet has brought about conjectures on who he/she is. Fukuda Noriyuki (general graphic director of "Bakugan Battle Brawlers") said he had no idea about it. Animator Moritomo Hiroki ("Bokura ga Ita") said a graphic director who shares a work room with him was talking about the news on the phone.

I don't get why you post news when you don't know if anyone actually died. Until we know for sure this is another case of vapor news.

Yeah, it's on twitter. So it's time to wait for an official statement I guess.

Wouldn't it be better to only announce the death with the name of the director?
Well, anyway, death news are always sad... RIP for him ;_;

So has it confirmed by madhouse that it is indeed Satoshi Kon? I thought if it was as high profile as him, we would have known from the start, so I thought it would have been someone more obscure, but still did a lot for Madhouse such as Yuzo Sato, director of the adaptations of Kaiji and One Outs).

Anyway, rest in peace, former Madhouse director who may or may not be Satoshi Kon.

The one quoted earlier works for Gainax. Other various industry people are going on about it as well. Not confirmed yet, but it's not looking too good.

Yasuhiro Takeda, Gainax Head Producer. It's since been confirmed by the Madhouse head guy. There will probably be an official announcement soon.

I've still only seen Paranoia Agent by the guy. Guess I'll be doing a Kon binge this week

Unfortunately, various sources within the Japanese industry, notably Madhouse and Gainax ones, report Kon's death too... I REALLY hope it's not true. Really.

Oh, ok, thanks. Well, we just have to cross our fingers then. But of course, it's sad whoever it is.

Oh, crap. I've only seen Tokyo Godfathers, but it was excellent, and I have been thinking of watching the rest for a long time now. Will most likely also do a marathon of his works as soon as I have the time. I'll leave the R.I.P to after the official announcement, just in case. It's a really sad day.

Unfortunately it has been confirmed by Otakon staff, who cite Maruyama (of Madhouse) as a source:

So it looks like it really is Satoshi Kon if it has been confirmed by Madhouse, Otakon and ANN.

Perfect Blue was a great movie and I liked Tokyo Godfathers quite a lot as well.

Rest in peace, Satoshi Kon. You will be missed.

I was really hoping this would just turn out to be a rumor, or some manner of false alarm.

The man was an auteur that knew how to use animation to make the implausible or impossible seem all too real. Nobody made movies quite the way that he did. Millennium Actress is one of my favorite films and I only just discovered Paprika a few months ago. It practically breaks my heart to think that The Dream Machine could go unfinished and that a truly spectacular career has been cut short so soon as this.
