Why did they never reveal L's real name in the whole anime? I didn’t know it was Lawliet until I googled it myself.

L's real name, L Lawliet, was never revealed in the Death Note anime or manga directly. However, it was officially confirmed in the Death Note 13: How to Read guidebook, which provides additional details about the characters, including their full names.

This guidebook was released as a companion to the manga and includes background information, interviews, and stats on various characters. That's how fans learned L's real name.

Took this from Chatgpt. It was also never revealed in the manga.

I've always wondered about this. We know that Mello and Near called themselves M and N, but the former weren't their real names either.
I think "Lawliet" might've been what the L stood for, but I don't think that's his real name either.

Honestly speaking, I don't know if Lawliet is his REAL name. Because we know that these guys have 3 names. First are the letters L,M, and N. Second are what the letters stand for, M standing for Mello and N standing for Near. Strangely enough we don't know what L stands for and I feel like it stands for Lawliet but that still means it's not his actual name. The third are their real names, these are the ones that can kill them. Near has the name Nate River and Mello has Mihael Keehl. Again, we don't know what L's real name is at all and I doubt that it's Lawliet because that doesn't sound like a real name like Nate or Mihael. Lawliet could very well be what L stands for. So this discussion is much deeper than it seems.

L's name may be L lawliet, with the first one truly being his name but not revealed while the second is indeed his second name, or the second itself may be a lie as well.

In the first hypothesis his name is is L lawliet, like N river and M keehl, but it is odd that his first name would also start with L just like the second name. Maybe just a coincidence if it is truly the letter of his name. Adds up to the mystery of his name.

There is that too, that lawliet is his name with the second one just not being revealed

Ah, I see. I believe Lawliet being his first name makes sense due to M being Mihael and N being Nate. Either way, I guess we will only know half of his name.

Couldn’t we see his real name over his head while looking from Misa’s eyes/perspective? It was fast but if you paused I think?

it's been a while since I read or watched Death Note but everything we see through Misa or other Shinigami Eyes users is in Shinigami Language. That being said I could be wrong

I thought about it some more and I'm pretty sure I remember a scramble set of numbers representing each person's lifespan when seen through the Shinigami Eyes. Assuming that these numbers aren't random, that means that The Shinigami Eyes use a cipher that's likely based on Japanese. If the goal is to know L's real name, we'd have to decode the cipher and then freeze the frame on the scene where L dies. I'm not a linguist so I entrust this task onto however might think that they're capable of doing it
