Me and my brother have been watching anime together for a while so I've been having a harder time finding shows i think he'll like.
Some of his favorites are Mob Psycho 100, Madoka Magica, Attack on Titan, Akira, Hunter x Hunter (2011), Jojos, Bocchi the Rock, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Death Note.
My brother is 13 so he's generally ok with some gore and darker subject manner however, he is uncomfortable with more graphic depictions of it.
He really likes battle shonens but is open to trying other genres.
What animes do you think he'd enjoy?

Since your brother is OK with "some gore and darker subject matters," I highly recommend From the New World (Shinsekai Yori, in Japanese). The anime is not too graphic with gore, only some scenes of blood here and there, and an amazing cast of characters. I especially love the main character, Saki, and I strongly believe she is one of the best female MCs in all of anime (that I have enjoyed watching, at least)!

Be warned, though, in early episodes, there are some scenes that might shock your brother and you. These scenes might look like they came out of nowhere and don't make any sense whatsoever, but just remember it's the show's world building and makes sense within the anime's context.

Overall, it's a deeply thought provoking anime worthy of being watched by anyone. ๐Ÿ˜ŠโœŒ๏ธ

I also watch anime with my brother! For some variety, I’d reccomend:
Space Patrol Luluco -highly recommend, very goofy and fun, but with stellar animation and dynamic (though short) fight scenes. 6-minute episodes.
Blue Lock -made soccer into one of the most intense battle Shonen I’ve ever seen. No real blood or fights, but still very action packed and fun.
The Elusive Samurai -can be bloody at times, but is mostly a sort of bizarre slice-of-life until they start fighting. It’s made by the guy who wrote Assassination Classroom.
Trigun -either version is solid, because they both offer different experiences. 1998 is fun and goofy but tragic and has good action sequences. Stampede has better action with better animation, but it’s more of a serious sci-fi with less comedy.
Blue Exorcist -might be just what he’s looking for. It starts off as a heavy battle Shonen, but goes into a more psychological drama with the newer seasons.

Then watch Solo leveling man...it's the most popular anime rn....but ofcourse it's not finished so...u can go for one punch man, it's fun and it's not like there are any Cliffhangers after season 2....it's just a fun show....like mob psycho
Why are the ratings so low.....is it that bad.... because personally I am enjoying the show....it's fun... Action is good and all but I love the charecter interactions...

I'm not sure what more graphic depictions means so I can't really guage what is and is not okay on that alone.

Funny enough FLCL would probably be a good series but the * is that I think it would only be effective if he was at an age where he's already started to develop feelings for the opposite sex. Idk it just depends on him. Mob Psycho 100 was like THE best pick for him all things considered.

I'd say Code Geass, Initial D, and Fate:Zero are like quintisential teenage boy anime. Fate:Zero is definitely a bit graphic but definitely not worse than AOT. Initial D would be fun if he really likes cars or racing or both which a lot of younger boys like, and Code Geass is like THE teenage male power fantasy.

If you read this one more note. DO NOT show that kid Evangelion until he's like around 16, that series can do like really psychological harm to even adults who are not prepared to experience that let alone children. Trust me End Of Evangelion and like Berserk are cannon moments so if he ever ask about those just grab his shoulders and tell him that he'll get to see it eventually.

If he likes battle shonen there are still plenty more to get into—I’d recommend one punch man if he liked mob psycho. If he hasn’t already, I’d have him watch demon slayer and JJK. Solo leveling is also good, technically not shonen. I also recommend windbreaker if you want something not as commonly suggested as those shows.

“Non-battle battle shonen” is a fun subgenre that always gets me hype. I like Death Note and Blue Lock.

If you want to get away from shonen altogether, I recommend Cowboy bebop and Samurai Champloo to anyone if you want an older anime.

Frieren, and ranking of king’s are other good shows with action in it. Kaguya-sama is funny if you want a romance.

Bungo Stray Dogs is a fun watch. It’s got great action, great characters, and an interesting plot. There is violence of course, but it’s not too gorey overall; however there are a couple very brief more intense scenes (ex images of bodies with their skin turned inside out appear on screen for a few seconds). It’s a seinen so I recommend making your own decision on if it’s appropriate. If he likes it, it could be a great entryway into manga as well, since the manga is even better than the anime and has a lot of spin off series and novels that haven’t been adapted yet.

Frieren is my personal favorite shounen, you just can’t go wrong with it.

For fans of Madoka Magica I ALWAYS recommend Princess Tutu. It’s definitely a lot more chill (it’s for kids after all), but the story still has a darker tone that I think a lot of fans of Madoka Magica will enjoy.

Katanagatari. It’s weird. Not weird like some of the author’s (NISIOISIN) other works but it’s unconventional in some ways in terms of story telling. Might get a kick out of it. It’s like 90% dialogue though, so idk how he’d feel about that. Oh and Samurai Champloo, also fire I’d recommend that to almost anyone if they haven’t seen it.

obligatory, did you watch FMA or FMAB question, cause both are good.

Gurren Lagann is the easiest rec i can give, the only issue is there's a bit of a male gaze to it. So you'd have to be okay with that.

Obviously, showing him some Ghibli would be cool. Would still be a good age to watch Nausicaä, Castle in the Sky, Howl's and Spirited Away too. Probably too old for Totoro (but maybe not) and Ponyo. Probably too young for Princess Mononoke or Princess Kaguya. Definitely too young for some other stuff (Grave of the Fireflies, Ocean Waves, Wind Rises, Only Yesterday, etc).

You could still watch pokemon which is actually a lil better than you might expect considering its age and audience.

Unironically, it might be a great age for Princess Tutu, but that may be a hard sell. Lil Witch Academia you'd probably both have fun with though.

Redline would probably put him through a wall. Dead Leaves might be the coolest thing to him.

Yeah, there's a lot, lol.

Your brother's got good taste!

Based on the animes you mentioned, I'd say he likes not only amazing fight scenes, but also good character development, good world building, and relevant themes that develop at a good pacing.

Here are my recs taking it all into account:

- Vinland Saga explores themes such as vengeance, war, slavery, and freedom. It is a historical story, its characters existed irl, but ofc it takes liberties on their portrayal.

- Dororo has AMAGING fight scenes, all protagonized by a disabled character who can't see, hear, or feel anything. It deals with power, identity, and the fucked up world we live in.

And since you mentioned he is open to trying other genres:

- Dungeon Meshi is my go-to anime rec. It's a light-hearted comedy anime with darker undertones when you arrive at a certain plot point. It's main theme is food and how it brings people together, but the story and its characters aren't... uh... normal, so they don't go about it through normal means. The characters are endearing, and the plot is excellent. My only "complain" abt this anime is that the first few episodes are slow paced, so it takes a bit for you to get truly hooked. But, once you are, it's hard to stop watching.

Okay, I know what you mean. But me and my twin sister watched a few weird anime with our older brother when we were still young. We watched From the New World (Shinsekai Yori), also with our older brother, when we were like 13 or 14. [The reason WHY is because whatever our big bro was watching, we also wanted to watch too]! ๐Ÿ˜—

I KNOW that's hella weird. But watching anime with my 2 favorite siblings, even if the shows were fucking weird and cringy as hell, is still one of my favorite childhood memories. Even if me & my sis didn't always get the jokes & fanservice! ๐Ÿ˜…

Especially watching TOONAMI late at night with my siblings, before anime was considered cool & mainstream!โœŒ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž

โš ๏ธ LONG POST! SCROLL DOWN FOR TL;DR!

Heck, both me and my twin sister are in college even though we're two broke @ss college students! Who cares? I know right. But the point is, being exposed to explicit content at a young age DOESN'T ALWAYS mean you'll end up being a degenerate in real life.

TL;DR: Watching fanservy anime when someone is still in grade/middle school isn't always a guarantee that they will be a lost cause to society. It just DEPENDS on the person & what kind of explicit shows/anime they've watched, you know? Me & my twin sis turned out fine, I guess, so....? Meh. ¯\_(ใƒ„)_/¯

EDIT: BTW, the freakin' manga has way more fanservice than both the anime & light novel combined!

Also, me & my siblings are still huge fans of all kinds of different anime & mangas. All thanks to having cable on our TV! Us 2000s OGs had it good back then! Our childhood was ๐Ÿ’ฏ% the best! Literally! ๐Ÿฅน

EDIT 2: Sorry, wrong post. ๐Ÿ˜…
